Too many tacos recently? Barlata's mix-and-match small plates will get you out of your food rut.
Daniel has created a very strong menu, great flavor pairings, and a relaxed, but hip vibe. We visit at least once on our trips through Austin! Always one of our favorites. Worth the $$!
Great service, great wine, tasty food, and very accommodating. Went for a birthday dinner and Barlata did a great job. Thank you!
Our waiter seemed not focused.! He forgot kept messing up our drinks and food orders. We were celebrating my wife’s birthday and we can tell he completely forgot to put her order in. We had to wait a long time and my wife ended up eating by herself. We love barlata but today’s service was so average.
One of the most authentic and delicious Spanish meals my wife (Spanish Jerezana) and I have eaten in the USA. We had the huevos con crema jamon and a patatas bravas tapa. Both dishes were fantastic. The patatas were better then some we have had in Spain. First time I tried the huevos, but it is now one of my favorite dishes. We had been here several years ago and were not thrilled with the paella. We decided to try it again for brunch and we are so glad we did. If you want authentic Spanish food in a nice venue you must try Barlata. Say hi to the owner/manager, Vanessa whom we met. She is an American of Spanish parents and a very delightful person. We will be back often. Oh, and try the tarta de Santiago and the pastel de hojaldre for dessert - both are superb. A truly great Spanish restaurant.
Barlata is a tapas restaurant and their usual mode is to bring out menu items as they are prepared. That works fine if everyone is eating tapas. On this day, though, we were all ordering from their brunch menu for an Easter meal together. The food arrived at staggeringly-different times, with two people completely finished eating before another person had even been served. It seemed as though only one waitperson was on duty and even the smallest request would result in a ten-minute delay before it was fulfilled...and it was often not correct even then. The quality of the food was fine, but the service and pacing of the kitchen was severely lacking.
Overall, as close to Barcelona as you are getting in Austin. Large variety of standard tapas offerings with some inventive choices. Try the sausage stuffed squid, quail and sardine flatbread to start. The traditional paella was authentic and flavorful. Entire staff were very attentive with being overbearing. Need reservations, as this place gets busy !!!
Four of us ate at Barlata's on Saturday. We were somewhat early (6pm reservation) so it was not as noisy as previous times. The food was excellent. The choices of tapas is large so things can be found for every taste. Of particular note was the lamb empanadas and the ceviche.
I was so excited about going to this restaurant. It was full of people on a Friday night and seemed like a great place to be. Our table was kind of cramped and sticky. The table was so close to other tables that when wine was served to another table some of it had gotten on my place setting. I found the plates overpriced and underwhelming. My fiancé thought it would be great for people who enjoy tapas type plates; but, he also ate again immediately after we left!!! LOL Another thing---we realized we are not fans of Spanish wines nor could easily make out the wine list---but it seemed authentic to the restaurant. Although---I would not go back---my fiancé indicated that he would if our friends came into town and wanted tapas. We had the white asparagus---4 pieces for about $9---not that great. Then we had the brisket wrapped in tortillas---the beef brisket is ground---so its texture was a bit mushy and unusual for my taste ($12.00 for two small pieces). Finally, we had the pork loin---nice flavor for about 5 very small thin slices ($12 as well). Again---I know this is a tapas restaurant and the portions are small---I get it---but the appetizers at other restaurants are better than these small plates. On the upside---if you just want to try a tapas restaurant---give it a try.
We love Barlata and had not been in a few months. Returning felt like coming home. We tried a few new things, and have a few new faves. As always, Erik is an awesome server and has impeccable timing and great recommendations. And the dark chocolate olive oil ice cream with marcona almonds never disappoints.
We brought some out of town guests who have traveled extensively in Spain. They loved it! We always enjoy sharing Barlata with our friends and family. Thank you for taking such good care of us! We’ll be back!
If you remove that a few of the tapas selections were bland (uneventful flavors) and an absent & smell waiter, then it would be a great place!
Once again Barista delivered. Greatwines, great food, especially the squid ink paella, authentic and very well prepared. One if the better paella outside of Spain.
I'm usually a big fan of Barlata, but this time the service was disappointing.
We waited a lot for food and drinks, though the restaurant was not overly crowded. The food is normally very good and I normally like this restaurant for special occasions. This time not so much.
We had the barlata paella! Delicious!
Everything was amazing; food, service, everything.
Delicious food! Went for a birthday date with my spouse and we both really enjoyed it. While the servers were pleasant and our food was brought out quickly, they were not particularly attentive and difficult to flag down someone at times. However, this would not keep me from returning for more great food!
I love this place!
We loved it! good wine, conversation AND food. thanks!
We had such an amazing time at Barlata. It has become my family's to-go-to restaurant for any birthdays, special occasions, and Father's Day. More so they were super accommodating with our last minute reservation add-ins. This last time we went, we went to celebrate my Dad's birthday with our family, and it was such an incredible experience. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure our table was taken care of. The food was delicious and so was the Sangria. Lastly, I made a request through Open Table to see if they could play maybe play my dad's favorite Spanish artists and to my surprise they totally did... which was the cherry on top!! My dad had such a wonderful time and so did our whole family. Going to Barlata is always such a great experience. The Barceloneta Paella is our favorite go-to paella for sure.
Great food and wonderful service .. will be back soon .
Went to Barlata based on a recommendation from a work peer. It was better than expected. Having had Tapas in Barcelona many times, this is one of the places that I would say rivals what you get in Spain. I also liked they had their own unique dishes which were excellent. Our experience for 5 was that everyone enjoyed the Tapas and pictures of Sangria.
hadn't been to Barlata's in about a hear. used to be amazing. not what it used to be... too bad
Great food. We made a mistake with our reservation (wrong day) and the staff was very accommodating and helped figure it out and get us seated.
Unfortunately we went for a birthday celebration and none of the desserts tickled our fancy! The only one we wanted they were out of. ☹️
On our second time at Barlata, we decided to check out their brunch. My husband ordered the grilled flank steak, which came with fries, and a flavorful romesco sauce. I ordered their version of an eggs bene which came with jamon iberico and pimento hollandaise. Everything tasted perfectly and, I would say that Barlata is one of my favorite brunch spots in town. When Spain feels a world away, definitely check out Barlata, where you will easily be transported.
Barlata was recommended by a friend. We love Spanish food and were really, really impressed. We sat outside on a beautiful night. The service was great as well.
We had olives, pulpo, Gambia de ajo, ceviche and the Coca. It was all delicious.
I always enjoy my visit here. The food is very good and reasonable, and the menu offers a great amount of variety. My wife and I brought our daughter, and the restaurant was very accommodating.
Great waiter. Wonderful food. We have been on a diet and this was easily adapted although the wine was tempting
great server, great suggestions for wine pairings. great tapas.
Fantastic menu, great service. Will definitely visit again next time we are in Austin.
This was the third time that my wife and I attended a date night at Barlata as she really likes tapas. The place was packed and very loud, which is not good for a date night and discussion; however it does show how popular the establishment is. I would prefer the energy as opposed to a totally empty restaurant. The Waitstaff was clearly overwhelmed with the crush of people and it took about 25 mins to get our first drink orders taken... but again it was packed. There was little to no room around the bar or immediate table tops so we hung out by the front door about 15 mins while we waited for our 8 pm reservation. I don't mean this review to seem negative just accurate, we loved the food and will definitely be going back.
A little overcrowded, the ambiance was pretty loud and it was very hard to have a conversation. The service was decent, but not especially helpful.
Súper!! Everything was delicious and they served really fast.
Lovely - esp the server. She made great suggestions that we loved
My wife and I had valentines dinner here. Great service and Tapas. The Gambas and scallops were excellent. Try the duck leg!
Wonderful place. Will go back on a day not as busy as Valentines Day.
This was the second time we ate there this week and usually love the restaurant. However, one item was not cooked and horrible. When we sent it back the waiter acted like we just didn't like it or know how it should be prepared (even though we had the same item 4 days prior and it was cooked, not raw). He later came back and apologized that the kitchen said it was sent out raw mistakenly and we were correct. However they didn't credit our check. The meal was just ok, as opposed to what is usually wonderful. $87 (before tip) for two people (not having any alcohol)...for that price it should be much better than it was. Very disappointed :(
Will definitely revisit this place...fun, lively atmosphere and great tapas. Innovative cocktails, solid sangria on the rocks (not too fruity, not too wine-y) and a great house red. Our group of six tried nearly everything on the tapas menu. Favorites were: olives, cheeses, chorizo, lamb empanadas (nice surprise), paella, ribs, mussels, calamari, cured jamon, shrimp...least favorite was probably the salmon (not bad but not outstanding). Fun place for group tasting and drinking.
Perhaps my favorite restaurant in Austin, Barlata has never disappointed. We found a few items on the menu we had not tried before at the recommendation of our server. He was excellent and now we have a few new favorite dishes. Can't wait to go back!
Everything we had was awesome, the potatoes, the ox tail, squid ink paella, ceviche, and shrimp....if I was to go again I wouldn’t get the ceviche or the shrimp. Just didn’t wow me, but still very good! The service was a little slow at first to get our drinks and waters, but then after ordered it seemed like everything came at once and we were shoving food down our mouths to make room on our table. If we were to go again we’d order 2 things at a time and space it out so we could enjoy each dish on its own. Awesome place though!
