What Insiders Are Saying
Too many tacos recently? Barlata's mix-and-match small plates will get you out of your food rut.
Make Happy Hour available to everyone in the room; not only the right side. That was ridic! ALSO, if they are using OPENTABLE, they need to make sure they get the reservations. They didn't have ours.
A group of 12 went to Barlata for a Happy Hour on Monday. It was lovely. The food, service and lack of congestion (not too busy) was wonderful!
Took friends who has never had tapas before, and they LOVED it! Everything was delicious and service was very good. Wine was a bit expensive, but SO good! (1/2 price bottles of wine Sundays & Tuesdays, apparently...)
One of my favorites, always on a short list of places to go, it's always a lovely experience.
Food, Service and Quality all exceeded expectations.
We got there close to the end of the brunch shift so felt a little rushed to order, eat and finish up. Food was very tasty. Great parking!
My family took me here for Father's Day brunch at my request. My wife is Spanish and we truly enjoy the food at this restaurant which we visit whenever we want authentic, delicious Spanish food. Having lived in Spain and done extensive traveling in USA where we always try a Spanish restaurant in whatever city we are in if available, my wife and I agree this is so far the best and most authentic Spanish restaurant we have eaten at. The patatas bravas are the best I have ever eaten, as is the gambas al ajillo. Paella is very good also. Every meal is a great experience. This time we were someone disappointed since they had run out of jamon. I have never heard of a Spanish restaurant running out of one of the main stays of Spanish cuisine. Nevertheless, we forgave them and enjoyed a great meal with Estrella Damm beer, good wines and specialty drinks.
I have never been disappointed when I visit Barlata. The food, beverages, ambiance and service always makes our visit a wonderful experience
Overall the food delicious but perhaps not terribly consistent. We eaten there before and remembered the food being more flavorful. Still, the said, it was a good dining experience.
We ordered cheese plate and jamón which didn’t come out after 40 minutes. Then all of the orders came out in a half hour. Terrible timing of plates and a complete mystery on why the cheese showed up well into the meal., Quality of food isn’t the same - seems less vegetable dishes. The oxtail was a poor portion. Very disappointing.
We have dined here previously with my Spanish cousins. The food was always good. Not so this past Saturday. The Paella was too salty, the rice was undercooked.
This is a great place for dinner
Hit the all day Happy Hour by accident. Glad we did. Food was great, we ate well and the sangria was on point.
Amazing and fun dinner!
I'm a little late to the party but I finally got to try Barlata and I loved it! Great cocktails! I'll definitely be coming back!
The dining experience was delightful. The food definitely try's to mimic Spain Tapas. The atmosphere is great , except the music is just a little loud for my taste. The waitress was great and pretty attentive. I would recommend this for a business meeting, meeting friends, or for a date night. Not family friendly for children. I'm sure children would survive and are welcomed but not a place I would take my kids because of the audience the restaurant caters to.
Incredible food, quick service. Extra shout out to staff who made special seating arrangements to assist one of our party.
Have easily been here a dozen+ times over the years and am a fan, but things seem to be slipping a little based on this last visit.
Menu: I honestly thought a page was missing at first, as this has basically been boiled down to a couple of salads, paella and 20 meat/fish dishes. I’m an omnivore, but would be nice to have veggie tapas options beyond shishitos and patatas bravas.
Food: The quail was delicious, the cheese board respectable, but the squid a la plancha and 3 skewers we tried (sardine, shrimp & tuna) were all just ok, with almost slapped-together flavors that never quite seemed to gel. We wondered if there had been a recent chef change, because that didn’t used to be the case.
Service: A bit lackadaisical compared to previous visits where servers were passionately knowledgeable about wine list highlights and every dish. We asked for a basic overview of the cheese board, and the woman who dropped it off pointed at the photocopied descriptions tucked under the fig spread. Asked for a few extra slices of toasted bread beyond the 4 tiny ones provided, waited a good 10 minutes, staring at our cheese.
Have had so many great experiences at this place in the past. Hope this was an aberration.
A great Mother's Day family brunch. My wife is from Spain so we come here because of all the Spanish restaurants in the USA, and we have tried many of them in our travels, this is one of the most authentic. The food is always well prepared and the service is excellent. The patatas bravas and gambas al ajillo are wonderful and the paella is first-rate. Also the best mussels I've had in Austin. Great wine list and Estrella Damm beer also. Worth a try if you want real Spanish food here in Austin.
This place is always awesome, hands down best Spanish tapas in town.
Enjoyed delicious food 4th time now. Never disappointed. Lots of tables means sitting very close to others. Small plates means more variety.
Always a fun place to eat and explore great food. Always reminds of of Spain.
This is my favorite restaurant in Austin!!! My favorites are the patatas bravas, Barlata Paella, and gambas ajillo. GO, NOW.
It was loud
Went there to hopefully get authentic Spanish Paella. Having lived in Europe for 8 years, I have longed for the taste of the saffron rice delight. Much to my disappointment the Paella lacked any saffron, which the waitress remarked, that restaurants cook Paella different ways. Another gentleman said there was saffron in the dish, but after a short discussion capitulated. The dish was dark and salty, instead of a yellow rice infused by saffron. Had Tapas which I should have had more of. They were good.
This is a great place for a lively meet up with friends and family. The service was great and the food was very tasty. I think the prices are a bit high. The seating is a bit crammed in, so, this is not the place for a quiet dinner or a 'heart-to-heart' conversationalist's destination.
Keep up the good work!
Our Sunday evening tapas at Barlata was outstanding. We hadn’t been to Barlata for a while, but decided to go on the spur of the moment, and will go back soon. The small plates were sized just right, and great value at happy hour. Our waiter, Erik, was extraordinarily helpful and knowledgeable with the food selections, and steered us to an excellent bottle of wine at a good price. The bar area is the way to go - much more atmosphere than the restaurant side, but perhaps that was just because we were there at an off-peak time.
Very loud but festive. Food was all very good and service pretty fast. The restaurant was very hot the night we were there-almost uncomfortably so.
The food and drinks were delicious. Our server didn't come around as often as she should have, so our orders took a lot longer to place.
Great, love it! Just a little noisy and tables a bit close, hard back chairs not comfortable.
The food was absolutely incredible the noise wasn’t too bad but I thoroughly enjoyed myself
We had a fabulous happy hour with so many different tapas plates very tasty and enjoyable.
This was our first time visiting Barlata Tapas Bar. The food was very good, Wish there were a few more Vegan/Vegetarian options available though. The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. We will probably be visiting again soon.
Always enjoy the Hortelana Paella. The scallops with grapefruit & orange as well as the tortilla española were excellent as well. Good service. Good tunes.
Great hostess, careful waitress, and delicious food here to share. A first time experience with some new foods...it worked out for each of us. It was very nice to dine there.
We were greeted right away - best service and delicious food and wine! Can’t wait to go back!
The food was very good to mediocre. The quail was very very good. The Wagyu beef was tough and didn't have the characteristic mouth feel. The paella was okay with some of the ingredients, like the mussels leaving something to be desired.
Inside was noisy,.Outside that April evening, the air was lovely. We enjoyed the outdoor seating. Luke was our good waiter. We made a meal from the all day Tuesday happy hour menu, so we had a lot of wonderful small dishes.
My wife and I have been regulars since the inception and have enjoyed the attributes of Barlata. Food, service, and the scene have always paired well, until last night. While the service and energy of the restaurant have remained unchanged, the menu has started to pull from the roots of the Spanish cultural authenticity which once flowed seamlessly from menu to table.
