'To those of us who work a few blocks away, the opening of Barcode, in the former Fourth Estate Grille space near 17th and L streets NW, qualifies as big, huge, stop-the-presses news (at least as far as our happy hour options are concerned). Gone is the casual bar-and-grill vibe of the old place; in its place comes LED lighting, brushed steel surfaces, dark-wood paneling, lounge seating and communal banquettes. A set of turntables stand by the front door, as if waiting for a passing DJ to set them in motion. It makes sense to see them, because the bar is run by the DC Hospitality Group, which also oversees Lima and UltraBar.' - Washington Post. Come enjoy an after work drink, stay for dinner and enjoy the scene.

Barcode Ratings and Reviews
So I was on a vacation with my friends and we used a Groupon for $120 of food for 6 people. We get sat by the hostess at a very long booth that is open at both ends. She's asks if it is fine if she seats 2 more people at the end of the booth. We said that was fine however, she then sat 4 people at the end of the table who made it very squished and never brought out more place setting for us since the other people took 4 of ours. Our waiter comes and takes our order and gives us water. He never told us his name and rarely came back to check on us or refil our water. Since we didn't know our waiters name we couldn't even ask another waiter to go find ours. The whole place was extremely loud. We went at 7pm and the bar was filled and they had a live DJ which was extremely annoying during eating dinner because I had to yell across the table to talk. Our whole dinner came out to 98$ so we wanted to use the last $22 on desserts. When re waiter finally came back and saw that we were done he assumed we wanted the check and I said no we still have $22 I want order dessert. So then he said what do you want, and didn't even ask if we wanted to see the menu again. The dessert and all the foods were good. We got the check and we saw that the waiter added a 20% tip to the total of the bill. He did not deserve a 20% tip and on the menu it said a suggested tip will be added to the bill for 6 or more people. Since it said suggested, and not mandatory, we left a 10% tip because the service was not good and we left. The waiter then chased us down the street, I have never had a waiter chase me because of a tip. He said that we didn't leave a 20% tip and we told him no we didn't because the service was not worth a 20% tip. He made us come inside and talk to the manager and he told the manager that we shorted the bill. We did not short the bill we paid for our food we just didn't leave a 20% tip like he wanted. We explained everything that I typed above to the manager and we left.
The food and layout of Bar Code was great! The bartender makes a mean version of a "Dark and Stormy" that's on point. I really liked the live music they provided when the DJ wasn't on. It is on the pricey side, but since it was our first time there we used a Groupon and that offset the cost. The DJ was decent, but played the music so loud that you had to yell to talk to the person next to you. I would return, but NEVER when they are having a private event. All in all a good spot.
The food was good. My favorite was the salmon, it was grilled, but tasted like it was on an open grill, very tasty. We were happy they had a healthy delicious dessert of Greek frozen yogurt and berries. It was a great end to our meal. Service was very good too. The only disappointment was that we went there to eat and then go dancing. But they'd decided to cancel their dancing that night. It said on the website there was dancing that night, so it was a bit misleading. Be aware it is like fancy bar dining, with TVS around and is a bit loud. Not suitable for a romantic dinner.
Overall it is a nice restaurant, modern, clean, pleasant. The food is also very good and the beer and wine list are excellent. We went for lunch with a friend who is living abroad, we were altogether 4 people. Service was extremely slow and the noise level at the height of movement was very high. I would definitely recommend Barcode but with the remarks above.
The music was too loud for dining. We were put in an area that was crowded and people were to close to our table. Thus, we ordered appetizers and not diner. Also, we're there on a Saturday during happy hour, but we're told that it does not apply on this particular Saturday.
I don't know if someone was missing bit service was not great at all. It took a very long time for someone to take our order as well as for food to arrive. The server hardly checked in on our party and, after waiting a very long time, I had to get up to receive my own check. Maybe Friday night is not good for dining because neither my guests or I had a good experience.
I really like this place! It's very close to Farragut Square, so taking the metro there is convenient. The pizzas are delicious (as is the rest of the food), and they have quite the beer/wine/cocktail list! I love their outdoor seating area, and on a nice day after work, it's packed, so you know this place is popular! My only complaint would be that the service can be slow because it's so busy. And here's a tip: they offer a very good Groupon deal, so buy that first to really get your money's worth!
Barcode is a great place with no pretense and really delicious food. The menu is broad and offers something for everyone. The quality of the food is far superior to the comfort of the room, which is quite open and loud, as it is primarily a bar & club. Should you choose to visit during dinner hour, you will be impressed with the experience.
This was a pretty good restaurant. They have a bit of outdoor seating, which is why we decided to give it a try. It had an energetic vibe. The happy hour prices were good and the food was really worth the prices. I would recommend going to check it out, as long as you're not looking for a quiet, low-key kind of place.
Great food but be prepared for loud! Live music and nothing on the walls to absorb the sound!I couldn't wait to get out of there as my ears hurt by the end of dinner. When the band ( which were pretty good jazz band ) took a break I could finally get some relief then they came back and we paid the bill and left
Barcode is more of a bar than a restaurant, but the food was pleasantly delicious. From the Hummus, Avocada Dip and Tzatziki Sauce appetizer with pita bread to the chicken and waffles and the Beef tenderloin and fettuccine with a red wine reduction sauce, sweet peppers and spinach, it was all very good. The craft drinks were also equally satisfying.
We were in DC for trip and planned to eat at Bar Code. We made a reservation for Tuesday night, March 14th. We got a confirmation email that our reservation was accepted. We arrive there only to find them close. We tried to call to find out why they were closed and got no answer. Needless to say, we were angry!! Why couldn't someone call us since we had a reservation? Poor business practice.
Made a reservation for dinner at Barcode, only to show up at the restaurant and find it to be closed. There had been snow during the day, but neither the website or Twitter page mentioned the closing. We were left without a reservation, scrambling to find a place to eat before a show. I emailed the restaurant but have since received no response.
It was HORRIBLE. The music was so LOUD I had to shout at the host that we had a reservation. He shouted back but I could not hear his response. My nerves were shot just by 10 seconds of standing in the doorway. I took my family and left. It would have been a nightmare to try to have dinner with that much noise going on. Ear splitting decibel level. HORRIBLE.
Aside from the noise we really enjoy this restaurant. The prices are reasonable. The service is very good. The lamb chop "lollipops" were cooked perfectly; tender and delicious. The grilled salmon was very good with a bit of balsamic sweetness. The Parmesan mussels were very small but the sauce with the crispy bread was excellent.
I live in the Midwest so am not familiar with DC eateries but was meeting a friend for dinner there. My friend wanted a restaurant in that neighborhood so I researched on Trip Advisor and Yelp, which listed great reviews for Barcode (inc., Washington Post: Best Place for Happy Hour), and to my delight, I found a Groupon to try it. Easy to make online reservation. Great food, attentive service. Very happy!
Just all round good. Love the food but just wanted more of a craft beer selection.
The service was excellent all though we went on a Monday night can't imagine how crazy this place is on Friday or Saturday.
Tried to book a table on the Friday night best they could was Monday.
I booked a table for Valentine's Day dinner. Barcode offered a Valentine's Day special online but failed to mention when I booked that they were only serving the Valentine's special and nothing else. So, when we got to the restaurant we were disappointed to find out that all they were serving that night was a seafood dinner. Well, my date does not eat seafood and they were unwilling to offer any other courses. We were forced (not physically of course) to leave the restaurant and find somewhere else to go. The next problem is that it was Valentine's night so there was nowhere else to go. Everything was booked! This was extremely unprofessional and very disappointing for us. They ruined our Valentine's day dinner! They could have at least apologized to us at the time. I will not be revisiting or recommending Barcode to anyone.
