Barbounia is an oasis of modern Mediterranean cuisine, influenced by the food and cultures of Greece, Southern France, Morocco and Southern Italy combined with a beautiful chic ambiance and a welcoming staff. Under the direction of Partners Alon Jibli and David Sasson, the restaurant is said to “move into Manhattan’s top tier of Mediterranean’s” as stated eloquently by Bob Lape of Crain’s. Barbounia is open daily for lunch, dinner and a weekend brunch.

They didn't have the appetizer on the Restaurant Week menu that I wanted, and refused to substitute a comparable appetizer, so it screwed up my whole order. They tried to suggest another appetizer on the RW menu that was nothing like what I wanted. I ended up ordering something I didn't want. I had to ask for bread, and then they charged me $3 for it. I asked for a single espresso, and they brought and charged me for a double espresso. Terrible service!

It's not bad but wasn't great either and in Manhattan, there are just too many other good options. The food was ok - nothing outstanding. My pasta portion was not adequate (and I don't want "American portions" just enough to be sated). They don't offer any special touches (e.g. amuse bouche, fresh baked bread, petit fours).

It's a loud room so skip this one for a business meeting or romantic dinner. Overall, is just ok.

Went to Barbounia with an old friend for dinner on a Friday night. The service was friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. We ordered the selection of 3 Mezze: spicy feta, roasted eggplant and green tahini. They were all amazing and the bread that it came with was even better. We ordered off of the restaurant week menu which had a great selection compared to what I’ve seen at other restaurants. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

Food is good but over-priced. Further we ordered a three-flavor mezze and it came with a single piece of flat bread, sliced into five or six pieces, for four people. I asked for one more piece of flat bread and I was told there is a $3.00 charge...for bread! The restaurant should do itself a favor and just give the bread away at the prices they charge for the meal. I used to like this place. Next time I’ll go to Gramercy Tavern around the corner.

Terrible service. We ate our appetizers before our drinks arrived (and only after we chased down a waiter and reminded him)! The food was bland and clearly pre-made and microwaved as it arrived in 5 minutes. Just overall bad experience. Would never go back and you shouldn’t either.

We were supposed to be a party of 3 at 7, but the person we were meeting was an hour late, and 2 others joined us. The staff worked so hard to accommodate us, and we really appreciated it!

Portions were extremely small the appetizer consisted of two small shrimp. The main meal was ok and the dessert was poor at best. Bread seemed stale. Bread seemed stale.

We were there for restaurant week. Drinks are excellent I have the Casablanca . the wine and port was great

Would return for drinks at the bar not for the meal

I went to restaurant week on an extremely cold evening and arrived early, 6:15. The restaurant service started at leisurely but as the place filled up, it moved to inattentive. The room filled up @ 7:15 and is on noisy side once filled. The food was very good to excellent: My guest had the celery soup and the chicken kabobs while I had the salad and lamb. I thought for restaurant week the portions were very generous. Conclusion: I would certainly go again but arrive and order early.

Tried Barbounia for Restaurant Week lunch. The luncheon special required the entire table to order the mixed appetizer in order for the restaurant week price to be in effect. My guest did not want it, so I could not take advantage of the advertised menu. I got the soup of the day, which was wild mushroom soup. Tasty, but not what I had hoped for. My guest and I both ordered the taramousalata, which was very good. She was not pleased with the falafel. Wait staff was attentive. It was a bit noisy.

The only complaint was that the beet salad had no flavoring at all which was disappointing, wine selection not great but other than the that the food and service were good, place is beautiful.

Got seated about 50 minutes after my reservation. The prix fixe menu was awful. The “lamb shawarma” was essentially food truck lamb over rice, but somehow tasted worse. Never had such an over priced meal before. Will never come back.

Very great experience, exceeding my expectations for the evening. Our waitress was fantastic with little to no wait time on service and cuisines. The ambiance made it very easy to enjoy my date with my girlfriend which really set the tone for the rest of our night downtown. It bothers me to have to say anything negative about this restaurant but having made reservations earlier in the week and wait over 30mins to be seated while watching other people come in to be seated straight away was a major turn off for me. This hospitality almost had us checking for other choices to eat in the area, I hope if you do choose to dine here that you do not have to share that same experience because it is a really nice establishment. Host came off edgy and unconcerned with how patiently waiting customers felt, creating an unwelcoming feeling.

Nice decor, however the food was definitely not enjoyable. Everything was extremely salty, the portions were not filling. The noise was deafening between the music and people. We were unable to have a conversation with the person across from us. Unless you bent your head into the person next to you to hear, you had to be a lip reader. The service, however, was attentive. Very disappointing for us and will not be patronizing again.

We had a reservation for 7:30 via OpenTable though we’re not seated until 8:30. When I asked about the status of our table around 8, the host waved to a table where a nearby couple was sitting and asked if I would like to squeeze in & join them.

My friend and I went to Barbounias to celebrate both of our birthdays, and it was so great! We split a lunch special for Restaurant Week and expected the portions to be small for how cheap the lunch was. We were pleasantly surprised to find that we were given so much food that neither of us finished! And because it was our birthdays, when we ordered dessert, a candle was placed on one of them (the other dessert was too loose to hold a candle).
We entered at 3 and left at 6, and we had the place to ourselves for a majority of that time. The staff wasn't the most attentive, but they were VERY friendly and funny. Don't get your cocktails here, though - too spendy.
Would come back!

We had the fish tajine, duck shawarma and lamb kebob entrees, along with the hummus appetizer. All the dishes were superb, packed with flavor. We highly recommend this place for foodies.
