Our favorite restaurant
I write this review as a gentle reminder to please polish the rough edges up a bit. I love this place, however it is not cheap, so little things mean a lot.
Our waiter LITERALLY berated a co-worker in front of us and then went on to tell us what a slacker his co-worker was. Inappropriate.
During our meal, a server (or Busboy) LITERALLY whisked away an empty chair from our table. Didn’t ask. Didn’t explain. Just took it and left us with a naked table, with no consideration.
Fish entree, although a nice cut, didn’t seem fresh and smelled fishy.
Half of the pre-dinner entree items had up-charges attached to them. And there was no regular menu offering. Don’t offer a set price and then bait and switch.
You HAD to choose your dessert when you ordered your entree. Sorry, but I would like to decide how to end my meal AFTER I’ve had it, not before.
Most of these issues were small, however our entire party was a bit annoyed by the end of the evening.
Owner/manager: Please do not rest on your history alone. Live up to your glorious reputation and uniqueness. You’ve earned your respect for many years - please do not let it slip away like so many NY icons before...
What a delightful restaurant! Very charming and the food was very good! Definitely want to come back!
In one word, it was Superb! I went with 3 friends before matinee, we all ordered different dishes, we tasted each other’s and all loved everything we had! The Hudson Valley apple dessert was great!!!
The room is lovely. We went for a pre-theater dinner and ordered off the prix fixe menu (though it is not necessary to do that, if you want the regular menu, just ask for it). The food was very good (not great, but we did not expect it to be in pre-theater mode.) We thought the prix fixe menu was a good value at ~ $60 pp for appetizer, main course (some had surcharges), salad, dessert and coffee. The waiters were very efficient, which is comforting when you know you have got to leave at a set time for the theater like everyone else in the place! Yes, it was a little rushed. But that was appropriate and indeed comforting under the circumstances.
The staff went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make the occasion so special. It was our kids (7yo and 10yo) first time in the city, and Barbetta made sure they were given royal treatment. They even brought out free desserts for the kids!! I would definitely recommend this restaurant for the ambiance and service!
Had a great meal. It was relatively quiet for a Wednesday night. The food and staff were outstanding.
Great historic place close to theater district. Excellent food and service
We had a wonderful dining experience at Barbetta! Everything about it was PERFECT! We can’t wait for the opportunity to return!
Pretty retaurant but overpriced and not worth the cost. Food was OK, not great, and portions were small.
Amazing food was great the ambiance was like no other
Very courteous staff, good food and portion sizes. Prompt service. Thoroughly enjoyed it , very nice cozy atmosphere.
The hostess and waiters went above and beyond to help us navigate the menu and provided wine recommendations. We felt at home.
Wonderful, personal service. Excellent menu. Beautiful outdoor seating in secluded backyard- a real gem!
Food was excellent but menu was limited. They did not offer the full menu and this wasn’t clear till we sat down. Could not order from then main menu, but had to order from the fixed menu.
Excellent Wait Staff (especially Joey)!!! Their pasta is excellent - but other dishes are about average.
My wife kept asking for tea but it never arrived. After many attempts to find out why it had not arrived, the waiter eventually came over to say they did not have the particular teas. It took only a few seconds for my wife to find an alternative among the teas that were available. We could not understand why we had been forced to go through this ordeal.
I had another wonderful pre-theater dinner at Barbetta. The food was excellent, the wine selections varied and you cannot find a restaurant with nicer atmosphere. The staff is very professional and they always insure that you will get to the show on time. Highly recommend!
Old time Italian restaurant that is convenient for pre-theatre dinner. We like the set menu and the atmosphere, with very good professional servers. You should try it if you are in the area and going to a Broadway Show.
From the beginning of the evening to the end our experience was exceptional. The service was professional yet very gracious and personal. The setting is beautiful and the food delicious—altogether wonderful.
We booked a table at Barbetta for after a Broadway show. When we arrived, there was a private function downstairs so we were led upstairs. It was quiet, barring the loud air conditioning units buzzing and keeping the rooms freezing, uncomfortably so. The ambience was strange and not relaxing at all. A loud door kept banging closed making me jump. I asked the waiter what vegan options they had or dishes they could omit dairy to make vegan and he was really dismissive and unhelpful. For almost $30 a pasta dish we expected them to be delicious but they were average if that. This was the worst dining experience we had in New York and a real disappointment.
Always a treat. However, it was a disappointment that the garden and Main room were closed for a private .
Terrible service. Waiters do not talk. Removed our plates while we still eating without asking. Never refilled glasses. Food was bland, no garnishes, poor playing. So disappointing.
Great food! Wonderful setting. Dessert on patio garden-beautiful ambiance.
Best restaurant experience in NYC in Years! Service exceptional, the swordfish the most delicious I have ever had. Waiter Eduardo was wonderful.
It was fine. My mother loved it
When we arrived we stayed that we were not pre-theater and not in a rush. However service was very rushed, retrieving plates when we were hardly finished. The waiter who took our order was unpleasant as if doing us a favor by taking the order.
The room is very noisy, the food was good but not excellent
We will not go back
Special in every way.
Tourist or native New Yorker, don't miss it!
Lovely after theater dinner in the garden..... wonderful!
Great place for pre-theater lunch and outdoor courtyard was very pleasant. We enjoyed our lunch and attentive service from Tito. We’ll be back!
We come every year and sit in the lovely garden to remember and honor a lost friend. The food is delicious and beautifully presented.
Amazing food and wine. We were seated outdoors in the garden which was beautiful. Joey - our waiter, was second to none. Will definitely visit again!
Outdoor patio was ideal on a perfect day. Great service relaxed pace. We will make this a regular visit when in NYC.
This restaurant stands the test of time. The last time I was here might have been over 20 years ago on a business trip. Now I have brought colleagues from one of our other offices here for a good Italian experience. Barbetta did not disappoint. We were seated in the garden. It was a beautiful night. We sat down at a great table. There was both a pre-fixe dinner theatre menu ($58 for 3 courses) and the ala carte menu. The same items are on both. And it is truly worth it to op for the pre-fixe. But we opted for the larger menu. We first ordered smoke salmon and proscuitto and melon. Both were excellent (I wish I had a bagel for the smoked salomn.) We then split the fresh pasta with tomato sauce. Excellent and fresh. Thiis was followed by lamb chops (tender), bracciolo (could cut with a fork) and grilled swordfish which was some of the best swordfish I had in ages. We followed this with another round of the fresh pasta and tomato sauce (it was that good). Finally we split three desserts - lemon torte, hazlenut cake, and poached pear. Excellent. Nothing bad. Superb. The prices are reasonable for the atmosphere, the presentation, the food and the experience.
They do have an excellent wine list. We had two bottles of the Barolo. It was perfect with the meal.
For a special occasion this is the place - and it is right on 46th on Restaurant Row. It is also good for before a night at the theatre. The pre-fixe menu is excellent and worth the try.
It wont be 20 years before I return.
The service was TERRIBLE, except another server who wasn’t responsible for our table saw how bad of a time we were having and came over to check on us. His name was Tito, and the only reason why I’m giving this restaurant a 4 star rating instead of 1 star.
Food was very good. The service was awful. Great prefix for theatre.
This dinner was date night before broadway play at the oldest restaurant in NYC still owned by founding family. Nice atmosphere. Good food. Ala carte and pre-fixe menu. Moderately priced at $60 per person plus drinks. Servers ok. Felt rushed and served like a cruise ship dinner. Great to experience once.
Barbetta remains one of the true treasures of Manhattan pre-theater dining. Particularly on a nice evening when the garden is open, you are transported to pastoral Italy. The food and service are always reliably good. This time, we showed up half an hour late, we’re seated and served promptly, and arrived at the theater with time to spare. Although the restaurant was very busy, they handled the diners with grace and aplomb.
When we arrived, our hostess seated us at a table for two against the wall and we were shoulder to shoulder with the other tables. To call it cozy would be an understatement. The decor is rather tired and worn out.
Rather than receiving a basket of bread, which is common in an Italian restaurant, each setting had a small roll and breadsticks next to it. It felt more like a catering hall than a restaurant.
If you plan to visit Barbetta on a Saturday night, be prepared for a limited, pre-theater menu. Since this restaurant is in the Theater District, I expected they would have this offering, but when I had looked at their website earlier, it didn’t specifically say this was the only menu option.
The fixed menu offers selections for 3 courses for $58. While the food was good, I found the portions to be rather small.
After our waiter took our order, he never came back once to ask if everything was satisfactory or if we needed anything else.
When the last course of dessert was served, we realized the waiter never took our order for coffee. We had to ask a bus boy for coffee because our waiter had disappeared.
This restaurant likes to boast its long history, but perhaps it’s time for some changes.
Elegant Italian cuisine Food. Not your run of the mill Italian restaurants. Great service and an excellent caring staff.
