Celebrating its 108th Year, Barbetta is the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family. Barbetta is also New York's oldest Italian restaurant and the oldest restaurant in the Theater District. This three-fold distinction has earned it landmark status by the Locali Storici d'Italia. In a glittering interior decorated with 18th century Italian antiques Barbetta serves the cuisine of Piemonte, Italy's northwestern most region. In summer, its exuberantly verdant garden with century-old trees and scented with the blooms of wisteria, oleander, jasmine and gardenia make it a most sought-after site for al fresco dining.

Charming. Old world old school classic Italian restaurant. Great room, ambiance, piano, service and food. Open since 1908 or something like that, it is a real throwback but in a wonderful and special way. We will be going back.

I was disappointed that only the price fixed menu was available to us

The atmosphere is fantastic and the restaurant is beautiful. In addition, the food is exceptional and I would recommend it to anyone. I found the service to be somewhat lacking. The server is somewhat short in his willingness to describe the dishes, important to us because they were somewhat out of the ordinary. In addition, the server did not come back to check on us after the food was delivered and we never had the opportunity to see the server again. It didn't affect our enjoyment of the restaurant, but the server, who appeared to be a long-timer, was out of sync with the establishment.

We wanted to fall in love with Barbetta, really we did. After reading a charming article in the NYT, my husband and I couldn’t believe that as long-time New Yorkers we’d never dined there. I made a res for Valentine’s Day.

It was an enormous disappointment. The service was atrocious. And, I mean ATROCIOUS. We sat at our table for 15 minutes before any staff even approached us. When our order was finally taken (and curtly so), we asked to see the wine list. The waiter chucked some abbreviated, Xeroxed list at us, ostensibly to help us make a selection more easily, but we wanted the full list. It took another 10 minutes to get it. Meanwhile, completely mediocre starters arrived: for me, a beet salad that can be ordered pretty much anywhere; for my husband, some tagliatelle with marinara — at least the pasta was cooked properly. While we waited ANOTHER 30 minutes for our entirely forgettable sliced steak, the sommelier deigned to mosey on over. He was nice, but he seemed like he couldn’t understand why we were asking him questions about various wines on the list. We just gave up and ordered a Vermentino for @$45/bottle. One we’ve purchased at our local wine seller for a fraction of that price. Dessert was a lackluster panna cotta.

Oh.My.God. The whole experience was awful. And an enormous let-down. While we certainly weren’t expecting a Michelin quality meal, we would’ve been more satisfied and had more fun at Shake Shack.

Never, ever again.

My gf and I didn’t enjoy the food. The special occasion was for Valentine’s Day. The food came out very bland. We were the youngest couples there. I didn’t expect this from Barbetta restaurant. Very mediocre. The bill was staggering compared to what we had was similar to baby food.

Wonderful ambiance, terrific service . Food was very good, although the desserts sounded much better than they tasted- this was surprising.

When we arrived for our 6:00 pm reservation the hostess had already crossed off our name and apparently gave our table to a different party. She then offered us to sit at a table in the foyer to have dinner on a low table. That would hot have been satisfactory. No matter how successful a restaurant is, or how long it has been in business, it should always treat customers with respect; they failed.

My wife and I love Barbetta. We come here when we come into NYC for a Broadway show. It is quiet enough to have a conversation, great service, great food. Classic brownstone setting.

A restaurant that never disappoints in food preparation and presentation. Atmosphere is quiet and quite conducive to a fine dining experience. I have been coming to this establishment since I was 20 years old and I am now 62.

Barbetta offers some classic elegance and great food to the restaurant row in the New York City theater district. The food is classic northern italian and its preparation and presentation are flawless as is the dining room staff. Truly a wonderful experience to complement a day at the theater.

A romantic setting with old world charm of a pasted age. Excellent food, an extensive wine list with some reasonable prices, and attentive, courteous service, and an overall very pleasurable and pleasant dining experience.

The food quality was mediocre at best and definitely overpriced. The menu is difficult to read and I was just looking for familiar words.
The staff personnel are really nice and pleasant, but they need to get some younger generation staff. The restaurant has lots of potential but for now I would never recommend this place to anyone.

I read an article in the New York Times and decided I wanted to try dining here. The meal was during Restaurant Week. As soon as I walked in the owner came to greet me and personally showed me to the coat room. Although I was first to arrive the owner took me to my table (not like some other places that refuse to seat you till everyone is there). When I got to the table there was only the restaurant week menu (not like another famous restaurant that only gives you the restaurant week menu if you ask for it).

Our waiter was great and extolled the restaurant week menu and said if we wanted to see the regular menu he would bring it. I started with a salad that was excellent. I then had a beef stew over polenta. It was the tenderest cut I have had and I would bet that is was boneless short ribs. I had delicious strawberries for dessert.

I definitely want to return here as I had a great experience. It is nice to be made to feel at home.

I made the reservation for nostalgic reasons (I went there as a teenager and in my twenties and thirties with my parents). I am now in my 70’s and I was distressed to see it has no coherence in design; the food it stuck in the 60’s...it was dreadful.

This was an outstanding restaurant with history, chosen for its long-time family ownership. We were greeted warmly, the service and food were outstanding, and the staff was particularly helpful to my mother who was using a walker. We are glad we chose to dine here pre-theatre.

We went there during Restaurant week. Our entree choices were not adventurous, but the meals, setting, and service were exceptional. Great old-school charm. Bravo!

I was as impressed by the old world charm as I hoped to be, but food was a happy surprise...old fashioned, but beautifully executed versions of traditional favorites, with generous portions of the highest quality, cooked and presented with finesse. I’ll return for the food as well as for the unmatched atmosphere and ambiance.

This was one of the WORST restaurant experiences we've had in years. The food was bad to inedible. The acrid tomato sauce on the "homemade" pasta was right out of a can, and not a good can. Likewise with the chocolate "mousse" --tasted like cheap instant pudding mix. The service was unctious or perfunctory to indifferent. We went for Restaurant week, out of curiosity, and it was much worse than we expected. Having tried another landmark, old-school place, Delmonico's, a week earlier (& had a great meal), we decided to give Barbetta a whirl... disaster! This place should not still be in business. Given the state of restaurant options in NYC, it's amazing it's still there. And, too bad. I'm sure once-upon-a-time it was pretty good.
