Celebrating its 108th Year, Barbetta is the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family. Barbetta is also New York's oldest Italian restaurant and the oldest restaurant in the Theater District. This three-fold distinction has earned it landmark status by the Locali Storici d'Italia. In a glittering interior decorated with 18th century Italian antiques Barbetta serves the cuisine of Piemonte, Italy's northwestern most region. In summer, its exuberantly verdant garden with century-old trees and scented with the blooms of wisteria, oleander, jasmine and gardenia make it a most sought-after site for al fresco dining.

Absolutely wonderful! Had a truly excellent meal and delightful service in this one of a kind, historical jewel box. Can't wait to go back.

What a surprise to have had a lovely meal at this old restaurant that my parents used to love. The room is beautiful. The wait staff courtly, the salads and pasta we ordered were delicious and well prepared. Our only issue was with a very nasty hostess who was not pleased that we wouldn’t check our costs. We almost walked out but are glad she didn’t dissuade us from revisiting this special spot. Noisy, crowded Becco be damned as we’re heading back here next show.

This is an elegant restaurant with delicious, well-prepared and beautifully presented Northern Italian food. The staff was attentive but not intrusive, and there is a lovely outdoor garden for outdoor dining (that is if Spring ever comes to NYC!). Although the pre-theatre tables were filled, the dining room remained quiet enough to actually have a conversation. All good. We will return.

The head waiter was the rudest man ever encountered in a restaurant. We were treated with dismissive hostility throughout the evening.

Barbetta is a romantic, charming, old-school classic on Restaurant Row in the theater district, with an outstanding Piemonte wine list, very good northern Italian food, spacious seating, and live piano music in the background. I've lived in Manhattan since 1997 and didn't know it existed until it was written up in the New York Times recently. Glad to have discovered it! The fresh Piemonte salads and pastas are particularly recommended. Took my husband there for a special birthday, and it exceeded our expectations.

This a pre-theater food factory at fine dining prices. We sat down at 6pm and were out by 7:15. We felt very rushed. Initially, We couldn’t get anyone’s attention to get a cocktail. Then once we had ordered the courses came out faster than we could eat them .The service was confused and chaotic. Three times we watched waiters try to serve other tables our food. Maybe things are better after the pre-theater scene is past, but i would never come here again. Also the food was just okay, nothing special. However, two meals and two glasses of wine came to $200!

My favorite restaurant in the theater district. The food, service and décor are outstanding. My most recent visits have been for the pre-theatre dinners - and they are truly professional. The pre-theater menu has a wide selection of appetizers, main courses, and desserts. They have an outstanding wine list filled with interesting well priced Italian gems.

Old and very dated atmosphere. Waiters spoke poor English and were difficult to understand. My spaghetti had a hunk of pasta glued together like it had been at the bottom of the pot. Meal wasn’t hot.

The food was really mediocre. This is our second time, and we remember being much more impressed the first time. The decor is very tired, and the clientele just as old. There’s a difference between charm and stale.

My college student grandson and I ate here before the theater. The restaurant is beautiful, the service is excellent, the food delicious, and I could hear every word he said because there was no noise level at all, no background music, no clatter from the kitchen. It was heaven. I can't wait to go back.

The food was really really average. Quite overpriced for the amount of food. There was a lamp plugged into the wall on our table. The bread was cold. I was really looking forward to surprising my husband for his birthday, and this was a major disappointment. Very over-rated.

Lovely experience. Our dinner was excellent and very good service. I felt it was a bit pricey but I’m not used to Manhattan prices. That being said we enjoyed our time there and felt our dining experience to celebrate was worth it.

I took my kids here for lunch prior to seeing "Waitress" at my daughter's request, we were celebrating her 16th birthday. The restaurant is classy and elegant, yet very simple and inviting. The staff was very attentive and we were fortunate that there wasn't a full house with the main dining area only 1/2 full. Despite the two wanna-be Trumps sitting a few tables away being unnecessarily loud and rude (as Trump would likely be) singing their own praises to their yuppie parents, we all enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the entrees and desserts that we ordered. Only regret is not coming a little bit later in the season so we could enjoy the outdoor patio and seating area.

If you aren’t planning on getting the prix fixe dinner, the service is extremely poor. It was clear that they did not care about our table from the moment we asked for the a la carte menu. They never came back to ask if we’d like more wine or to refill our waters. There was a sense of disdain from the waitstaff toward us even though we would have ordered more had they given us the opportunity.
I would not recommend dining here to anyone.

Got there at 6pm and was asked if we were going to the theater. Told them yes but 8pm show around the corner. Ordered a drink sat and few minutes later he asked and we ordered. Had app and main course served within 25 minutes. No one spoke good English which isn’t a problem unless they don’t get it right. Head guy no help. Used to be a go to but now gone way down hill. Had scollops but were soft and flavorless. Wife had crabmeat which was a B- sorry to say we won’t be back. BEST PART. gave the hat check lady 5 bucks and she never stopped talking to her friend orb said thanks!!! See ya !!

Eduardo was charming and the rest of the staff worked hard and efficiently. We came in at 6 for an 8 pm show and had plenty of time - I think 6:30 would have also worked. The setting is charming in that it is old, authentic and has lovely interior trees in pots. The handmade pasta appetizer, crab main course, and creme brulee were our favorites. I agree with another post - your bill will likely be higher than you thought because most options on the prix fixe have unexpected fees. Don't go if you have to stick to a strict budget. If you have flexibility, this is a very nice, old-world experience. We had a very nice time.

Great option for a pre or post theater dinner. The ambiance is good old fashioned Italian restaurant. Great ambiance and food. We took our ten year old grandson for a pre - play dinner. The staff is great at moving dinner along at just the right pace to get you out on time without making you feel rushed

Past their prime. We were the only diners there when we arrived after a Broadway show on a Friday night. One other party showed up later. I'm sure the staff greatly outnumbered the diners. The menu on Open Table differed substantially from the menu that night. I know they've ben around for 108 years, but I predict that unless something changes they're not going to make it another century.

Service was gracious and efficient without being rushed. There is a pre-fixe $58 menu that includes appetizer, entree, salad and dessert. There are unfortunately very few entree choices that do not have a supplemental charge of $7 or $10. So the menu is not as good a value as it may appear to be. There were three in our party and we all chose entrees with the added charges. The swordfish, the Pacific bass and the filet mignon (sliced) were all delicious. There is a chocolate mousse with orange sauce for dessert that could be better described on the menu. It is not an orange based dessert with dark chocolate sauce. Nevertheless, it was quite good. All in all, a lovely pre- theatre experience in a classic, old-world tradition of continental dining.

Old world style with a very comfortable location. The restaurant is not very large so the atmosphere feels rather intimate. The food was delicious and the portions were the right size. We even had room for dessert and coffee. It is pricey but worth every penny. We will definitely be back.

We had the most amazing experience at Barbetta!!! Had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful staff who were all amazing and charismatic, got to hear stories and history of the restaurant and it was such a wonderful experience!!! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience, food was amazing as well, gnocchi were to die for and the tomato with fresh mozzarella salad was just as great. Thanks again to the staff for being so kind and making us feel part of the Barbetta family for the evening ..

We decided to check out Barbetta after reading a feature in the NYT that made it sound interesting, if a bit dated and so we decided to try it before the theater. In brief, we were wowed: Service was wonderful (we arrived before our friends and were made very comfortable in the cozy bar area, given some amuse bouche, etc.). Our hostess (the proprietor?) asked if any of us had theater tickets and then told us not to worry about the time. Although our timing meant we could only order from the prix fixe menu (full menu would have been available after 7:30) all four of us found items we wanted and enjoyed very much – and somehow, without feeling rushed, they got us out in 90 minutes – in time to make our curtain! And, yes, the decor dates back to another era, but it was fun to be in a lush, opulent dining room – with a pianist playing softly! – for a change. We'll be back.
