When we sat at our table, we were told that there was a “Pre Theater” set menu. None of the entrees were Italian dishes and the whole experience was underwhelming.
First time dining here to celebrate our anniversary. We loved the historical charm of the vintage decor. Food was very good. Service was good. Front of house staff needs customer service training.
The menu on open table - typical la carte Italian pasta and usual fare - is entirely different from the menu we got when we arrived. We were handed a mandatory expensive 3-course pre fixe menu that even our 9-yr daughter had to order from. It was absolutely nothing like the menu we saw online. The portions were small and fancy - my teenagers actually stopped snd got Chick Fil A on the walk back to the hotel! It was disappointing for sure. The server was nice snd the sommelier was too but not worth the nearly $1000 bill that we were not expecting and a menu was not accurately portrayed
Unforgettable experience, excellent food, authentic Piedmont taste, extensive list of Italian wines.
Good and attentive service.
Really recommended, I will certainly go again at the first opportunity.
It was a good experience overall
Old world Italian food. Great flavor!
Excellent service, delicious food, and perfect pre-broadway show dinner. Loved every minute.
I had the crab, which was very tasty, but presentation was not as appealing as I might like. Nice quiet and perfect place for our conversation.
We were only offered the pre-theater menu but we weren’t going to the theater. So our service was somewhat rushed. Also, the decor was a little stale; could use some updating. Overall, it was a good experience.
Beautiful dining area, very competent service, good food but very expensive, even for NYC. A very nice experience but just not worth the cost
The ambiance was enchanting, while the staff was very pleasant and helpful. Kudos to the Chef, the taste and presentation of the food was five-star.
Always a solid choice! The bue al barolo is always excellent.
DISAPPOINTING: We were excited that a once-considered-spectacular and special restaurant was open. However, the bus person could not speak English and the wait people were not attentive. They were not warm or friendly and seemed "out of sorts" and could hardly be bothered to be there. That was surprising considering how fortunate they are to have work again. The Fresh Mushrooms Alla Schobert was very interesting and very nice -- as was the Wild Mushroom Risotto. I have had Linguini with Pesto many times; at Barbetta it was average.
We dined pre theater for the first time since Covid. The food was ok and the service was friendly and efficient. I would prefer to order a la carte. so we will come back on a non theater dinner. The old world atmosphere makes this a real treasure in the theater district.
Amazing meal served by professionals. The dining area is a throwback to more formal and elegant times. Crab was so delicious, and the steak tender and flavorful. We ❤️loved it!
Wonderful historic restaurant. We had 12 in our party and they were still able to get us out in time for our shows. We all had the pre theater menu - they had multiple choices for each course and everything was wonderful. Highly recommend. I'd like to go back when I have time to linger a bit more.
The place is beautiful but past it’s prime. Bathrooms are from the 50’s & the water wasn’t working when we arrived. The waiter barked at us unintelligibly & was very rude the entire nite. The food came out cold & was slightly better than mediocre. Even the desserts that were supposed to be hot like the crème brûlée was ice cold. We were a table of 9 so between our bill & a 20% tip (because we are polite people), it came to almost $1k. Would’ve expected a better experience. This was a very special occasion & we enjoyed ourselves despite all. I recommend bringing in a specialist to make the upgrades & retrain the staff since it could be a jewel.
This is not a classy place. Nothing intimate or romantic about it. Waiters are not gracious, and kitchen traffic is right in the way of guests coming in. One big room, feels like quite a downgrade from the pictures of elegance.
The food is great, loved the pre theater menu, lots of good choices.
Both ladies at the front desk were rude. I know work is hard but patrons don’t have to suffer for it.
However, all in all I would go again.
Our first visit to Barbetta was wonderful. The ambience of this classic restaurant was as expected, waiters all dressed in white coats, little lamps on each table, etc. Wait staff were attentive without being overbearing.
Our food was delicious- rack of lamb and rabbit. The shared charcuterie was wonderful and our two desserts topped it all off.
We were there 2 hours which was what we wanted. Some left more quickly for shows.
We loved our evening and hope that more people will avail themselves now that we are nearing the end of this pandemic. Wish we were closer!
Thank you Barbetta family and those were work to make this a special experience.
The staff wasn’t very friendly, made us feel like teenagers who couldn’t afford the restaurant. Never offered a second roll but others were!
It’s a nice place but they abuse if you’re a tourist or in a rush for a show. Be careful with the “pre-theater” menu, expensive and not good. Check the regular menu instead.
Super high brow place with horrible service. Server was only interested in selling high priced items. Baked onion with melted fondue for 25 bucks!?
It was great
Incredible service, so many options and everything was so delicious! Really grateful to have been able to dine here.
Lovely old world charm
Timed perfectly for a pre theatre meal
Lovely experience, one of our favorite places in midtown.
What a delightful evening and culinary experience! We were treated with utmost respect and kindness by Eduardo, an icon; and the attentiveness of the supporting wait staff was comparable to none. The food was delectable and we savored every bite. The ambiance was lovely and made for a special evening. Highly recommend!
Shocked at how bad the food was. We had 4 in our party and all the food was bland and unappealing. Not worth the experience. The menu is limited and very ordinary. Felt like a novice cook bolied pasta and poured a can of sauce over it. If you want an Italian culinary experience this is NOT the place to go. Worst Italian food I've ever had.
Would not go back
This place is definitely a place to bring your grandparents, especially if they don’t enjoy a lively restaurant with awesome food and drinks. The decor is outdated and ugly. They have tacky fake flower arrangements on the tables. The food was mediocre and the bar drinks are subpar. I don’t recall any ambient music. Over priced for a lame experience. It’s the oldest restaurant and you will definitely feel like you’ve gone back in time or to an antique shop. I’m sorry I didn’t take any photos.
Classic New York restaurant. Great location, wonderful patio, and elegant main dining room.
A terrific restaurant. Old World charm abounds! Thoroughly enjoyable!
Barbetta is the best restaurant in NY for a pre theater dinner. The food is always delicious, the service could not be better. The attention to detail is superb.
We have been going to Barbetta since 1973!..
We love ut..the most beautiful garden and the old world charm...
We had been there in the past and couldn’t wait to return to NYC to dine there again. We were somewhat disappointed, unfortunately. Service was only mediocre, despite having adequate numbers of staff and the food was “just OK.” Don’t thin we’ll go back, sadly
Great place. Dated decor
Website showed a regular and a pre fixe menu. They only had the pre fixe and there was very little I liked. Pasta was ok but sauce seemed baked on- kept under a warmer too long? It was very noisy but I understand that it was 6:30 so a lot of theatre people. Overall it felt like an assembly line of pre made courses.
A lovely tradition with exquisite service. The perfect pre-performance dining experience.
