The only negative is the decibel level in the main room during dinner hour before pm shows start. Once that crush is over it returns to a very reasonable level.
Quite expensive but the food, wine and service justify this.
Got a special date I would gladly return.
You feel like your are in a throwback experience to the 70s. Neat place. Good for pre theater dining. Staff is friendly and attentive and some of them flat out entertaining! Food is good.
Fabulous restaurant. The food was excellent, the staff extremely professional and welcoming, and the decor is spectacular.
Barbetta never disappoints. It is the perfect restaurant for lunch before the theater. You can sit at a table, enjoy conversation with friends (you can actually talk without yelling), and enjoy excellent food served by a friendly professional staff.
Really good dinner just before the Broadway show my GF and I attended. Only thing they missed was the salad portions but they made that up to me no questions asked. I had a great veggies puree soup and filet mignon. Terrific dessert as well.
Great atmosphere: old school New York, with chandeliers and high ceilings. The food was excellent. Service was a tad brusque for the ordinary diner who doesn’t drink, friendlier for bigger parties spending a lot on booze.
Oldie but goodie.... I do wish the menu had more choices.
We had a 5:00 reservation and arrived early. The staff was very friendly and very gracious about it. We were able to have a drink in the bar area. Once seated at a table and given the menu, we were surprised to learn that it was a prix fixe menu until 7:30. We wouldn't have gone at that time had we have known. It was a good value-$58- and you have the option to order al a carte but off that limited menu. Wasn't a fan! The food was very good but not outstanding. I'm thinking maybe it was due to the fact that I settled on a dish I didn't really want.
The restaurant Ambience is quite retro which I loved. The food was good but not outstanding. We were annoyed that it was a price fixe menu only until 7:30pm. We did not want 3 courses before the theatre but had no choice. I didn’t recall seeing that it was price fixe until 7:30 pm so be aware of that. The service was very good, the maitre’d is wonderful. He came by our table and told stories that we really enjoyed hearing. All in all a good experience but would not jump at the chance to go back.
Loved our pre-theater meal at Barbetta. The tasting menu was lovely. Pasta, fish, salad and dessert all very very good. Service was friendly and prompt!
So special, like a magical trip to Italy. Service, cuisine, ambience—all perfect. Thank you!
This was such a great find! Old neighborhood restaurant with amazing food and drink! Perfect for pre-theatre dining.
Once again a wonderful meal and evening here. It is always a pleasure to have the lovely experience to be here.
Very elegant place, traditional and very classy, service was food too. But the pre fix menu isn’t that good. The pasta wasn’t at all good, no taste. And then had the beef, which almost tasted like spam. Salad had no taste ether.y girlfriend had the pork which was good. So it’s maybe what I ordered. But stay away from pre fix completely.
The actual restaurant, food, and ambience were exceptional. My only complaint was lack of service and attention, probably secondary to other tables that were on time constraints for a theater show therefore they were concentrating on getting them in and out. Otherwise would highly recommend this restaurant!
Delightful and delicious classic Italian food
To quote my boyfriend, this was the fanciest restaurant we’d ever been to. With that said, it was not the most expensive. Win, win. from the moment we entered the restaurant, when the coat check person took our coats, to the maître d’ bringing us to our table and our team of servers throughout the meal, the entire experience was exceptional. It is worth noting, that this is not your typical Italian restaurant. You won’t find chicken Parm or marsala on this menu. Instead, there is a variety of meat and fish such as roasted salmon with lentils or braised beef in a red wine reduction over polenta. The pre fixe menu was a fantastic value! The espresso chocolate cake (similar to a flourless chocolate cake) was divine. Aesthetically, the restaurant is beautiful. The service was extraordinary. The food was delicious. We can’t wait to go back.
Delicious meal as always. Very good value for the money. We did the Prix Fix menu but were there after the theatre crowd had already left, so it was very quiet and relaxed. WE always try to eat here when we visit NYC.
This is a NY institution. Revisited after many years. It was every bit as good as we remembered it. I had Sea Bass perfectly cooked with seasoned crisped crust, my wife had rack of pork also delicious and well presented.
Food, wine and service were all excellent. Cannot wait to visit again.
The place is what it supposed to be. Very old restaurant. Food is good but plates are very small and a bit pricey for what they are. The restaurant felt a little of a tourist trap. I say this for the fact that is in midtown it didn’t feel as authentic as it thought it would be.
Old word style Italian restaurant, right in heart of theater district. Pre theater menu was perfect and only a short walk to show.
Food was very good and ambiance as well.
We didn’t want to sit by the loud piano so we were moved to a quiet table in the entry and a had a lovely pre theatre dinner. The Pacific bass was perfectly prepared. Can’t wait to return?
We usually love Barbetta but had a bad experience this past Saturday. They seated us upstairs which was a library like ambiance, not nearly as pretty as downstairs. We were seated next to a door and it was cold and drafty. The food was not as hot as usual because it had to be delivered from downstairs. Even though we paid for dessert, it was not served until 7:40pm and we had to leave for an 8:00pm curtain. This was amateurish and made us feel cheated and stressed.
The wait staff were very attentive. We went for Saturday lunch. We were quickly asked if we were planning on seeing a matinee. Our answer was no. We stayed at our table until there were no customers left at the restaurant. The team ensured we enjoyed our stay with zero pressure to leave.
Overly pretentious with small portions that were not very good. Out of our three entrees, only the lanb chops were up to standard. Certainly not worth the money.
The food was delicious, and the waiters were very attentive. The restaurant seemed crowded so we were a few minutes late arriving at our show. But overall - very good.
Too pretentious and overbearing
Food is very good
I had wanted to try this place for a long time and just happened to be in the neighborhood that evening. I got there earlier than my reservation and wasn't sure if they would be able to seat me, but that was not a problem. I walked into the lovely dining room and there were only two occupied tables. It turns out that the room just cleared from everyone that went to the theatre. It was a lovely evening and I'm happy I finally got to dine there.
I was disappointed that it was a pre-set price for menu option which was not clear when we reserved. They let us order a la cart for the kids but it was still SO expensive. So many wait staff standing around and I felt too conspicuous in the big dining room - a bit stuffy - with all elderly people. I love the tradition but I think it needs something fresh to liven it up.
We were looking forward to dining at this restaurant prior to our broadway show. Nice location & seemed charming. I had the mushroom risotto, my husband the sea bass. Both dishes were average. Our waiter was inattentive & a bit curt. restaurant was not busy. We were underwhelmed.
We loved the old-world ambiance and atmosphere of this classic Italian restaurant.
Old world elegance at its finest!!
I used to dine here many times in the past (last time being probably 5 years ago) so I was looking forward to coming here again. Overall - I would recommend this place but only when they are not in pre theatre mode.
The food was very good as always but I was not expecting to only have the pre theatre menu available as this was not mentioned anywhere. From what I was told this is due to the time of the res (6:15pm). They did accommodate a request for an item off the regular menu but we were made to feel like it was a big pain. The service was not like it used to be - ex: I asked 2 different times for a sommelier to come over so that I could get some recommendations for a good bottle of wine and he never came over. Possibly the service was off because others were rushing to get done before the show, not sure. They were good about bringing out a birthday dessert for my girlfriend.
Great dinner before the theater. Eduardo and all of the staff were amazing.
The food was delicious, but the waiters were not friendly at all. I asked for a wine list and received it 10 minutes later, but he never came back to ask what I wanted until the entree came.
We had dinner at Barbetta after seeing a Broadway matinee. Everything was spectacular, from soup to nuts. All four of us found the food, service and ambiance to be superb. I highly recommend this restaurant.
My husband had the pork from the pre theatre menu And had a hard time chewing it I had the chicken and not allot of effort went into presentation and taste. Maybe their regular menu is better but we had the theatre menu and I don’t think I would go back.
This is a classic restaurant. Food was fantastic and service was wonderful. If you LOVE old world charm this is the place for you. Setting is an original "Manhattan mansion" and you feel the history. Pre theatre menu great.
A NYC gem! One of the best restaurants in a city of great restaurants! Consistently excellent food with outstanding service!
