Italian
Celebrating its 116th Year, Barbetta is the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family. Barbetta is also New York's oldest Italian restaurant and the oldest restaurant in the Theater District. This three-fold distinction has earned it landmark status by the Locali Storici d'Italia. In a glittering interior decorated with 18th century Italian antiques Barbetta serves the cuisine of Piemonte, Italy's northwestern most region. In summer, its exuberantly verdant garden with century-old trees and scented with the blooms of wisteria, oleander, jasmine and gardenia make it a most sought-after site for al fresco dining.

Surprised this has good reviews / is Michelin recommended. It was expensive for the quality. Salmon was overcooked, polenta was hard and nearly everything else was forgettable. The wine list is the only redeeming quality. A very disappoint experience.

We had a delightful meal at Barbetta Restaurant. There were 6 in our party - the men were all very pleased with their filet mignon. I had the lamb which was out of this world. two others in our group enjoyed their salmon very much. We all shared two risotto dishes and they were very tasty. We all ended our meal sharing 5 desserts that were heavenly!!

If you haven't been, treat yourself to the surprise and delight that is a wonderfully warm, elegant and special dinner at the authentically iconic theater district institution that is Barbetta. This place is special, with a beautifully, old world dining room and a refreshingly spacious, "al fresco" courtyard. Well-staffed with attentive, tenured professional servers. If it isn't already, Barbetta is about to become your favorite theater district restaurant.

Experience at Barbetta always excellent. Would love some more fish options without supplement. I love the salmon with cucumber sauce but that’s what I eat each time i’m There. Service is well paced and efficient. Room is beautiful and chairs very comfortable. Tables close. Overall delicious and relaxing dining.

Food was excellent but service was terrible. Told waiter of 7:00 theatre tickets. First two courses were served on a timely basis. Dessert took a long time and was cold as if it had been sitting around. Took forever to get and pay check. Had to practically run to the theatre.

Quickly reserved a table last minute. Love dining here. The decor is just so gorgeous, that center chandelier makes you feel as if you were in the times of Gatsby. Food is delicious as always. The service I’d have to say is one of the primary reasons to come back. You can find great food in many upscale restaurants like Barbetta. But the treatment here is phenomenal, from the moment you walk in. Fine, I have to admit the bass and asparagus jicama dish was divine!!

The food is amazing BUT the place is run down, the lights are too bright and even if the service is good, the service manager and his staff have no personality and offer quite a dry unfriendly service.

Use to dine there frequently back in the 80’s. Loved it then but atmosphere needs an update as well as the staff. Hostess and waiter brusque. Food was delivered 5 minutes or less after ordering. Just average for the high price. Won’t return.

Without a doubt great place to dine if you are seeing in NYC to see a show. Especially if you want a restaurant to wine and dine who understands the science of making amazing dishes, and can blend that with the art of getting you in, seated, served and out in time for the show without feeling like you are rushed or about to run late. The restaurant is set in a historic pair of brownstones and has absolutely charming decor. I plan to go back and reserve outdoor seating and try additional dishes. I had the Pacific Bass and my friend had the plate of lump crab. She had the vegetable crepe and I had the roasted beet salad. We have never seen so much crab sans shells before. Wonderful food.

Overall this was a very disappointing experience. This restaurant has been there 100+ years. We picked this location based on prior positive reviews. There is no sense in coming here unless you are getting the 4 course prix fixe menu. We ordered an appetizer and a 1/2 portion of pasta. Each was $~19. Each. The pasta was a half plate of pasta with a bland meat sauce that was lukewarm. I tried to talk to the waiter about it but they didn't return for at least 20 minutes. We had tickets to a show so I just ate it because I didn't want my stomach growling during the show. The wait staff seemed much less interested when we picked a la carte....which based on those prices is silly since they could have earned more money. It made us wish we had actually gone to Olive Garden instead (that's sarcasm before someone replies with commentary on my poor taste).

The location was lovely. The hostess was very nice as well. The building itself is well maintained. The decor adds to the vintage feel.

Barbara staff need an adjustment:
1. we were first couple to enter ( 7:45, 3/29) after the Theater crowd left ...the bar tender had a scowl on his face that conveyed " please don't bother me"...was there when we left at 10:00 also!
2. When I asked the sommelier if the Barbera D'Alba would be similar to a Pinot Noir, he frowned and with a rude tone told me " that choice is not the style you want" .
3. I ordered the wine he recommended from the book, a fine 2011 vintage Barbera D'Alba. He brought it, opened it, poured a sample, then put the cork down. The cork looked fine ( no need to sniff it)...the wine was nice, lighter in body and nose than expected ( but not a " turn down" ). After he left, I noticed the bottle was labelled 2017...humpf.
4. Bread course was bland whole wheat rolls. I asked it they had some nice Italian bread...Oh no, that comes in on Saturday! Are you serious?
5. The Caprese with Buffalo mozzarella, was fine, but the " fresh tomatoes" turned out to be little cherry tomatoes cut in half.
6. My linguine pesto was wonderful, as were our entries of Scallops and Colorado Lamb chops.
Barbetta's was, for 20 years, my go to Italian restaurant in the city. My grandfather went there for lunch in the early 1900's. Now, I will search for friendlier staff, honest wine service and fresh Italian bread and proper beefsteak or similar tomatoes with my Caprese salad.

Great service, really old Manhattan- restaurant has been in same family for 113 years- a classic and worth visiting either pre-theater or, when nice, to sit in their secluded garden. Pre-theater menu is a great value with excellent food Gnocchi is the best as is the salmon.

Excellent choice of pre-theatre menu. I had salmon entree and special pasta appetizer. Excellent lemon tart for dessert. A bottle of good rose recommended by Maitre'd went well with meat and fish. A good place to bring out of town visitors.

Disappointing and expensive for the ultimate quality.

Meat was ordered “no pepper” but came
Crusted with pepper. Sent back, new steak came out raw. Sent back again and was still almost raw. No time to send back a third time. Had to get to show.

No real vegetarian options for main course. Never came back with cheese to put on pasta.

Excellent Italian restaurant that is old school. Waiters wear tuxedos, service is outstanding and the maitre de was marvelous, a very attractive female. Gus is a great bartender as I was early for dinner and he makes a very nice drink, not afraid of putting enough alcohol in as other restaurants seem to be a little weak in their pours. It is expensive but worth every penny.

Pleasantly surprised! Old School Italian restaurants have disappointed me in the past, and theater district restaurants can be iffy. Glad I brought my parents here before Broadway. Food was good- nothing crazy- but the setting was beautiful and old school and we could actually hear each other across the table- a rarity in NY on a Friday night.

This is a lovely restaurant with authentic Piedmontese food, very good for both pre-theater and for a celebration. There is a pre-theater menu for $58.00 with a lot of selections as well as the option of ordering off the menu, and an extensive and good wine list.
