Very convenient to the Morgan Library, but a destination as well.
My first experience with Moroccan cuisine and it was delightful.
Nice middle-eastern ambience, full with a lunch crowd of middle-eastern men and tourists.
I enjoyed the artichoke with mustard vinaigrette, a unique combination to me.
Couscous was an excellent base for the vegetable stew
But most unique was the Pastilla which was a new experience and quite good.
Wonderful Mororrocan/French Med bistro. Delicious tagines (try the lamb with prunes and sesame seeds), couscous, appetizers, etc. lovely atmosphere. Service is friendly and attentive. Reasonably priced.
The food, service, and ambiance were great! I will be back
Despite lunch hour very accommodating for a group of 5. We were not rushed out and food was served promptly.
Nice small mid-town place. Great Moroccan food. Friendly and helpful staff.
Very average food. Inferior to other nearby Mediterranean resturants. Attentive service and nice ambience.
Great food and attentive service! A nice mix of traditional Marocan dishes and a few French ones.
Excellent except for noise level at our table near the bar. Better to sit on the other side of the room.
Loved the food of the restaurant and the staff was awesome. They were very funny and entertained us the whole course of meal with smiles.
My department and my friends all love this restaurant. We go there often for get-togethers, to receive guest speakers from out of town, to welcome the new class, and more. it is always extremely friendly and welcoming, and the food is always excellent. it feels like a second home to us.
The food was delicious/amazing...fresh food and so tasteful! The staff where very friendly/service minded good service. I can recommend this restaurant for anybody who loves to try real authentic Moroccan food. I have been to many Moroccan restaurants in the USA but Barbes restaurant is the best of the best.
Best regards from Younes Bichri from Sweden. :)
My husband and I had a great dinner here. It was the first time we tried Moroccan food and the hostess was very thoughtful and helpful in describing the food on the menu for us. The dinner was delicious and in large portions. It was a worthwhile experience especially since it was our anniversary.
A real neighborhood gem. The service and food are excellent, the choices and specials are always delicious. And that Sangria -- some of the best I've ever had.
Interesting and flavorful dishes; great vegetarian options. Very friendly and attentive staff. A nicely decorated, ethnic restaurant. Noise level was a bit high, as there was a large party on one side of the small restaurant having a great time.
the sangria is great here as usual as well as the food! Good portion of the hummus appetizer for sharing.
Menu choices are not a lot. Menu is a mixture of the Morrocan and French. Their breads were just normal and none of those though. There is a nice decor and ambience looks great. Lamb sausage was good and their lamb meat was well cooked but the chicken was dull. Pricewise they will add gratuity automatically to the bill. Also the cost of entree is between 23-30, so it is on the $$ side.
The food was great. The staff couldn't have been nicer and attentive. What we ordered was perfectly cooked and delicious. We had the price fix menu and it was well worth it. We would go there again.
This is a really special neighbourhood restaurant. The menu features a large selection of French/Moroccan cuisine. I had the chicken tagine that was served in an authentic tagine dish and it was delicious. I was in NY for business on my own and the staff and owner were very welcoming and attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant and will revisit next time I am in NY.
Excellent authentic cuisine. Quant decor with attentive service.
Service, food and ambiance were all good. Delightful neighborhood spot.
A terrific find - great food, attentive service.
This delightful restaurant is an asset to the neighborhood.
A local treasure and a delight to us and all of our friends and family we have brought here.
Dinner was good we tried a few appetizers and a cous cous meal and a vegetable meal. The meals were plentiful and delicious. We had to wait a bit for our order to be taken and it was not busy at all. The servers seemed to be chatting a lot together. However everyone was very pleasant and once they realized we were a little frustrated they paid us more attention. They offered us mint tea at the end but we were too full to take advantage. Overall we enjoyed our meal and would return.
Authentic tagines, wonderful flavors, moderately priced.
Restaurant took our reservation. We arrived to a shut restaurant with gates down and no one around. Unbelievably unprofessional.
Food is consistently good!!
Extremely friendly and attentive wait staff, delicious and fresh food, clean and all around a nice restaurant.
We always enjoy Barbes' authentic cuisine and charming atmosphere. The pastilla is just incredible, a nice combination of sweet and savory, and their chicken tagine is also great. The barbes special cocktail is almost like a mojito, minty and refreshing. They have a good selection of wines as well. Service is friendly and helpful and although they are small, it never feels too crowded.
We went to Barbes for my birthday. The food was incredible! Tried the grilled calamari salad. It was fantastic. We loved the tangines, especially the couscous morocaine traditionelles. Finished with chocolate soufflé that was the best. Will return again soon.
When you're tired of French, Italian, California, tc., & are looking for something different, Moroccan Cuisine might be your answer. Food was interesting, well-prepared & delicious. We loved it!
I was so disappointed. While the atmosphere of Barbes is as adorable and cozy as it always has been, our food was awful. The chicken tagine was tough and dry with no flavor whatsoever, let alone anything like the spices of a tagine. A huge number of my moules were not open and he sauce was tasteless. The wait staff were a good blend of polite and attentive but we were pushed to buy a wine over $7o barely after we sat down.
I hope this was an unusual experience--but I certainly won't risk going again anytime soon.
Wonderful salads! I used to live in the neighborhood and I moved away. It was a pleasure to be back!
The food was fabulous... like always. But this time it was very lound and we could barely have a conversation with each other
Stopped in late after a Friday evening at the Morgan Library & Museum around the corner, and it had a chill vibe with great music & lighting. Not too crowded so not too loud; would be great for dates. We shared a delicious series of appetizers (crab cake, tomato with goat cheese, and the chicken skewers) with just enough spices to keep it interesting without overwhelming. Wine was excellent. Would absolutely come again.
A few hiccups but I would eat there again.
The decor is lovely, the lighting is good. The ambiance is nice...except for the music which varies from nice background to too loud during the meal. It was hard to converse at times.
The food was s bit pricey for what you get for some dishes and I thought it strange that they serve a tagine but you have to pay extra for couscous to eat with it.
The food was tasty so that's a huge plus.
Service was pretty good. The young lady working was attentive. There were a few other people checking in too. That's better than being ignored but after being asked 3 times if we wanted a drink while perusing the menu, they might want to communicate with each other better.
Long wait for the bill in an almost empty restaurant, again a communication problem.
So some small things were a distraction but friendly servers, good food and nice ambiance.
The food is authentic Moroccan fare and the service is very good. Friendly and attentive staff. We have eaten there multiple times and keep returning! Great food and service!
Great ambiance and food!
My partner and I celebrated our 15th anniversary at Barbès and had a wonderful time. Our server overheard me saying that I was excited to have the pastilla and ran over to tell me that there was only one left and I should order it right away. I mentioned that it was our anniversary and the manager kindly gave us two free glasses of Champagne at the end of the meal. These thoughtful gestures really helped us feel welcomed and happy to be there.
We shared an artichoke appetizer—which was enormous!—and then I had the chicken pastilla and my partner had the couscous royal. All the food was wonderful, and the server recommended an excellent wine pairing for my partner's dinner. The prices were extremely reasonable; dinner for two with a shared starter, a glass of wine, no dessert, and a generous tip for our excellent server came in at about $110, and my partner had half of his couscous left for breakfast.
We got there at 7 and the place was almost empty (it started filling up around 7:30), so we could have a quiet, intimate dinner and didn't need to shout. The sound system was playing something like Middle Eastern house music, a touch on the loud side but very pleasant to listen to.
We will definitely be back, and recommend Barbès very highly!
Barbes is a pleasant neighborhood restaurant, albeit very loud on a crowded Friday evening, with attentive and considerate service, and an interesting, largely Moroccan oriented menu. Unfortunately, the preparation of the dishes is perfunctory, and the results on the table are entirely mediocre. My lamb tagine was entirely overcooked and mushy, my wife's couscous royale was dreadful. None of the dishes had any live flavor. I don't know what else to say other than that the cocktails were not any good either.
Nice place with good food And great service. Artichoke app is a cold Artichoke-- only surprise.
