Bar Toma - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Friendly, helpful service in this pizza joint at Water Tower. The meatball appetizer and roasted cauliflower were actually better than the pizza, though it was decent. Expect a bland, though wood-fired, crust with fairly basic toppings. I'll go back but will stick to the appetizers and roasted veggies.
This was our first visit to Bar Toma and I think we found a new favorite place downtown for the family. We have 4 kids, ages 5-11, and it's tricky to find a city restaurant that we feel comfortable bringing them to. The atmosphere was very casual and welcoming. We started with the monkey bread appetizer and it was very good. I shared the large size cheese pizza with the 4 kids and it was the perfect size. Loved the wood grill method! For dessert the kids had vanilla soft-serve but they said it didn't taste like ice cream. I ordered the cookie that was half Oreo and half chocolate chip - so good! My husband ordered the small size of the shrimp pizza and was only able to eat half of it. He said it was very good, though. Our server, Kyle, was very personable and got along with my kids very well. Thank you, Bar Toma, for a great experience!
We had booked dinner before heading to a concert nearby. Unfortunately because of the snow half of our party was one hour late! Our server was extremely accomodating! We ordered 2 different pizzas, they were excellent! I would like to go back and try different items on the menu. The only issue we had is that we were sitting near a window and it was pretty cold, I am sure we could have moved if we had asked!
I've been to Bar Toma many times and have returned because it was great in the past. They have revised the menu and remodeled the dining area. I liked the old menu -- especially the old salad preparations -- why mess with a great thing?? And.. no gelato anymore? The kale Caesar was just Ok -- lacked the seasoned breadcrumbs, kale cut too large and was not special (it used to be). The ricotta -fig crostini were good but needed a drizzle of honey and some basil or something. Missing the old Bar Toma!
The food was average. The pizza was very salty. The waitress didn't pay much attention to us even though the restaurant was not at all full at noon on a Thursday. She kept bringing me warm iced tea even though I asked for ice after the first time. We were not at all impressed & will not go back.
Service was good, although we were seated right by the door, so it was a bit cold. As it was around 1:30pm, there were plenty of other options for seating.
The pizza was less than spectacular. It tasted ok, but it was a bit over cooked, and yet kind of cold when it came out. I've had much better wood-fired pizza in the city and suburbs.
Outstanding service - called to ask for a seat to watch Cubs game and they proactively called and let us get a seat. Food was good but wish the giardanero was baked into pizza VS side and also they need to expand their dessert offerings. Great service though.
Already had a reservation to go to Bar Toma with girlfriends, then the Cubs ended up in game 7 of the World Series. I was not sure what to expect so I called ahead and Bar Toma ensured me they would have the sound on and would note that we wanted a table with a view of the tvs. We arrrived a few minutes late for our reservation and after the game started and they still had our table for us! I had never been to Bar Toma and it was different than I expected, more casual with a very comfortable atmosphere. They had plenty of tvs and it was a great place to watch the game, full but not overly crowded.
As for food, we had the fig burrata crostinis and "monkey business" pull apart bread to start. We ordered the monkey business because we noticed it on another table when we walked in, and it did not disappoint! The portion was huge, plenty for the 5 of us. We each ordered a small pizza (unnecessary but we each wanted something different and had about half left to take home with us). I had the pepperoni and added giardeniera to half, the pepperoni was very good but I was a little disappointed that the giardeniera was not cooked into the pizza, just put on the crust after baking. My sister got the salami and ricotta, which was also great. Another highlight was the special pizza, sausage and fennel, my friend who got it loved the flavor, only down side was the tomato cream sauce was very filling so she only ate a couple slices.
Service was great, although we had to hunt our waiter down for the check. That may just have been because he expected us to stay for the whole game though, we left about half through.
Finally, they had half price bottles of wine, can't beat that! Everyone in our group agreed that we will definitely come back to Bar Toma.
I was so impressed with the level of service we recently received. I was dining with a family who brought a toddler. They put us at a hightop table but said they had a tall booster seat. It was a busy night, and they quickly realized the tall booster was taken. Two people came over to apologize and offered us a round of drinks on the house while we waited for a regular table to open up! We all felt taken care of in the best way possible, and it made me want to come back more often!
Plus the food we ordered was yummy :)
5 star experience all around!!!
A friend and I went to Bar Toma for a casual dinner after a day of shopping. We had been there a couple of years ago and loved the pasta. We were surprised to find the menu had changed to primarily wood fired pizzas. Although pizza wasn't what we had intended to have that night, we are very glad we did! The pizza was delicious! Our waiter recommended the roasted cauliflower, so we gave it a try. His recommendation was perfect! If you go to Bar Toma do not leave without trying the roasted cauliflower! The goat cheese sauce it is served with is to die for! Overall, Bar Toma is a great place to have a fun, casual dinner!
