Bar Six Ratings and Reviews
Though “hopping” at night, Bar Six is calm and quiet for lunch - an excellent neighborhood choice for a leisurely midday meal where you can have an easy conversation in a normal voice and be heard. The artichoke appetizer is always delicious as is the onion soup - two menu items that stand out.
Had been to the bar once many years ago and all I remembered from the experience was having an attitudinal waitress. When I arrived this time, the hostess, instead of actually greeting me at the door, motioned for me to go to her. I told her I had a reservation and she called over the manager. They started walking to the rear without saying or indicating whether I was to follow or not and after we all tripped over each other, I was seated. Not the most professional handling of what one might assume was a frequent function in a restaurant. I'd have been concerned if not for the fact that the friend I'd be meeting has become a semi-regular and has been talking it up. In any case, things improved.
Our table was in the back, which is very pretty and comfortable. A tad noisy, but bistros tend to have few acoustically absorbent materials, so it was not unexpected. Our waiter was pleasant but not engaging. After the 4th time he asked if we were ready to order, he got the idea that some people like to linger over their cocktails. Both of ours were nicely made and served promptly. Our food, the Bisteeya and the Mushroom Risotto, were both excellent and prompt. My espresso was considerably better than the norm.
So, yes, overall it was a good experience. Given the turnover in most restaurants, perhaps the service issues will be improved upon.
New Year's eve dinner for my birthday. The zucchini chips were great, the caesar salad ok. However, the steak au poivre was awful. Described as: STEAK FRITES AU POIVRE DRY AGED GRASS FED NY STRIP W/ HAND CUT FRIES & A COGNAC PEPPERCORN SAUCE
The steak itself was meh, the sauce had the consistency of A-1 , way too heavy and with nary a peppercorn to be seen or tasted. The french fries, which I asked for well-done, came barely cooked.
BANANA BISTEEYA dessert was very good.
I was there last year for the same event and the food was much better.
I want to say the service was bad because of a server at the beginning. My friend and I were chatting about random things, when suddenly, food was put in front of us. We very confusedly turned to the server and said it wasn't ours (it couldn't have been, as we had just ordered 2 minutes ago). The server let out an exasperated huff as if WE were at fault, grabbed the plates, and then stormed off. My friend and I were not too happy about that, but then another server made me change my mind about the service, because this server was cute, charming, and funny. He recommended a dessert to us and although it wasn't my type of sweet, my friend loved it, so it all worked out.
I also tried ratatouille for the first time here. It was... not bad? Just tasted like a lot of vegetables...
I sat down at the bar during happy hour because I had extra time before meeting a friend elsewhere. I had oysters which were delicious so I had another order of oysters. And they have my favorite, Plymouth gin.
I was so happy I called my friend and suggested she join me at Bar Six. I love Moroccan food.
I ordered chicken tagine, and it was dry. I don’t even remember my appetizer, but I do remember that the waiter brought the tagine before I finished it, and left me holding the appetizer while he put the tagine in front of me and left.
I was surprised at the poor service and disappointed in the food. Perhaps we antagonized the waiter in some way?
Really nice choice of food with Moroccan influence, very tasty and reasonably priced. While noise levels moderate, there is more ample seating than normal NYC restaurants, so very comfortable for conversation over leisurely dinner and NO rush in getting out. Definitely would go back
Had a lovely birthday celebration with family here recently and everyone enjoyed the meal tremendously. We had brunch and I can say the steak and eggs were great as were the waffles, burgers and omelettes. Our servers were attentive, accurate and brandished a sense of humor with our group. Will definitely go back!
We met for a preconcert dinner. We were seated immediately. Our waiter was charming and considerate. The service was timely. Dishes were well-prepared and nicely presented. Several menu items were unusual and enticing along with some standard bar burgers, all were well received. We enjoyed the meal and would gladly return.
Pleasantly surprised with BarSix. Really great food, lively but cozy atmosphere. Great lighting and nice décor. Staff was attentive but not overbearing which allowed for an evening of long conversation with an old friend. Could also be fun for a date night. A neighborhood-y, quiet feel, tucked into a rather busy block which could easily have been passed by. Glad I didn't miss it.
Bar Six is always a good choice. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and reliably good food. "Go to" dishes for my family are the onion soup, the kale salad, the tagines, the skate, merguez sandwich (!), and the burgers (beef and turkey) ... but everything there is good.
The food was pretty bad. Steak au poivre without poivre in sight yet bathed in a brown gravy. The meat (not even sure I'd call it steak) was so tough, cutting it gave me an arm workout, and then on several occasions I had to spit unchewable gristle back into the plate.
