What Insiders Are Saying
Bar Primi is a great East Village move for a pasta-heavy group dinner.
Bar Primi is a comfortable, casual spot for decent Italian comfort food. The food will not blow you away, it's pretty standard, but the ambiance and service are good. I recommend Bar Primi for casual weekday dinner with bae or friends. The prosciutto appetizer is a great deal that includes a heaping pile of prosciutto - take half of it home for sandwiches.
Great restaurant! Our first time in and we will definitely be returning. We had to wait a little bit with a reservation but the hosts were very attentive and made sure to have us seated as soon as possible. Food is just great! Highly recommend.
Very good—enjoyed it greatly.
We dined here before for my husband’s 70th and came back for the squid ink pasta dish. It was good and flavorful. I think they changed the pasta for this fish?
The food was great. The service and ambience superb. A little loud, but we will visit this restaurant every time we come to nyc. I can’t wait to try their carbonara!
The service was very rushed. Three different wait staff associates tried to take our plates before we were finished.
Excellent overall - cocktails, wines, pastas. One exception, bring in martini glasses for martinis - there is nothing worse than a martini in a coupe glass , it’s shameful
All good except very noisy. Was impossible to hear across the table.
Great experience as always! Good food and best atmosphere for a cozy Sunday night dinner before the holidays.
The host staff was rude when I asked to change my reservation party head count. They made zero effort to accommodate even though I booked it a month ahead. Also thought it was weird our waiter brought out two different bottles after we picked out one from the wine list already to sell it to us? Seems like a cheap move, you should sell up during the selection not after the fact. The wine was brought out in a carafe and not opened in front of us, which should happen. Suspicious. I love Bar Primi's food and atmosphere. Staff is questionable...
Food and cocktails were great, pity the table next to us was very loud (I guess that was just bad luck) Will definitely go again!
Delicious food, beautiful place, excellent service
Service was minimal. Food was below satisfactory. And expensive given these two factors. If you’re in the search for great Italian food, there are so many better alternatives .... very close by.
When I arrived place wasn’t busy at all(5.30pm ) , I had a reservation for 2, but they they didn’t let me sit whithout my friend . At the bar nobody offered a drink or a glass of water while I was waiting, so I needed to ask for it . The waiter was pretty friendly , food was good but overpriced in my opinion, for $24 I got a small size of pasta, nobody offered cheese or fresh pepper.... Wine recommendations was amazing, exactly what we were asking for . But I don’t think that o would choose that place again or recommend it to a friend
We love everything!
We love this place but the noise level is so ridiculous we can’t even have a conversation without shouting. Idiotic.
The food was delicious, we had 2 pastas and the kale salad. Kale salad was EXCELLENT.
Food was good, but not as great as it was a few years ago.
A great value! Food is outstanding and not too expensive.
Great food one of our favorite spots
We booked the restaurant for our sons 21st birthday. The resultant is quite dark which would be lovely for a romantic meal but made reading the menu difficult. The food was ok but our daughters meal was salty.
Loved this place! Beautiful ambiance!
The service was really poor. Our waiter was not to be seen. I had to wave someone down so that I could get some parmesan cheese with my entree. He never checked in with us....it was such a disappointment. The noise level was almost unbearable. I understand fully that the restaurant is busy and crowded, but then turn the music down!
Walking in, the front end staff was kind and welcoming and the ambiance was gorgeous! Our waitor did help us pick perfect wines and that’s about it. My meal came out cold and he didn’t bother to check on us until he brought the bill. He hovered until we paid and we felt rushed. Definitely won’t return back unless it’s for a glass of wine.
I wasn't sure what to expect here as I'd seen mixed reviews. All of our food was amazing. Would HIGHLY recommend the hazlenut and ricotta toast, pumpkin agnolotti, lamb bolognese, and pepperoni brussel sprouts. The dessert menu left something to be desired but I will be back.
Got there for my res at 9:45 at 9:40 was not seated till 10:15 - not acceptable - hostess was at least polite - this place is a restaurant for 20 some things who think they are grown up and in a real restaurant. But they are not. its a diner that is expensive really expensive for a diner/bar. Staff is all ok but it doesn't feel pro. food super average. if you have no where else to go go here its pretty there is booze.
I'm a big fan of all of Andrew Carmellini's restaurants (especially The Dutch and Locanda Verde.) However, I love having Bar Primi in my immediate neighborhood. It's a real gem. The vibe, food, and service are all outstanding. Prices are reasonable and they have a tight (but great) wine list. Everything on the menu is excellent but the pastas and the salads definitely stand out the most. And like all of Andrew's restaurants, everyone who works there is both a true professional and genuinely nice. A rarity these days!
Birthday- squid ink pasta was a little too peppery and hard to taste the crab. Otherwise meal was excellent.
I have been going to BarPrimi for many years (had my first date with my wife there AND we got engaged there..so we hold it in HIGH regard). Had a really off day there when we went for brunch. Service was awful & her egg whites took about 45 minutes to get & they left ALL the ingredients out of the frittata to add to the insult of bad service...she was too upset to complain & just wanted to leave. The manager came over and apologized (and picked up the check) so probably would not do brunch there again since it appeared very hectic (large groups, hostess confused, waiter unattentive) but won't write off this place yet since we find the food always really good & tasty and the service has always been good on past visits.
Just an off brunch day I suppose......we'll give it one more go for dinner
Went on a Saturday night for a birthday dinner. This was my second time here and probably the worst of the two times I’ve been. Hostess Katie was incredibly rude and disrespectful and should probably find a job that makes her happy instead of hosting. food was great. Waiter was nice, although it seemed that he was preoccupied with waiting a lot of other tables that there was no mention of the specials for the night and he didn’t refill the water glasses until we asked. We also ordered a bottle of wine that was not refilled by the waiter. I don’t mind pouring my own wine trust me, but i was confused because the first time i had gone to this restaurant the wine was poured everything was on time, specials were mentioned. Service was inconsistent between the two times i went. Not a big deal but the first visit definitely set higher expectations.. it’s better to go on a night that isn’t busy. Preferably mon-thurs night. Or early sat/sun dinner.
Everything was amazing , except for the tourist lingering outside of the window... changing her clothes . Asked the manager if she could leave since she was in the window and she refused , they let her stay . She looked high / drunk and it was inappropriate and intrusive
Everything was very good overall. And they brought out our dessert with a candle without even asking cause I notified it was a birthday in the rez
Great service and probably the best gluten free pasta I’ve had in the city!
Our waiter was awful but the management was great and pulled through with our delayed and messed up order
This was my 3rd visit to Bar primi and it was delicious. The meatballs and the carbonara are my favorite along with the affogato for dessert.
Was a nice experience, wait staff was great very attentive.
Great food but the waitress rushed us, which I did not like!
I've been to Bar Primi 3-4 times before and have never been disappointed. It is definitely one of my top 5 spots in the city that I hit up when I find myself craving a quality bowl of Pasta. The service is always good, but my friends and I felt very taken care of by Frank this time around. My girlfriend is quite particular about red wine, and he was kind and patient enough to open 3 different wines for her to taste. Naturally, his suggested bottle hit the nail on the head. We left feeling warm, full and happy. Will 100% come back.
Food was good, not great. Service was very slow and our server forgot our drinks. Overall, not bad but will definitely not be going back. Not worth the $100 for dinner for 2.
