Bar of America Ratings and Reviews
This visit was not the best and it was not totally the fault of the restaurant. It was Truckee’s Halloween parade so the town was full of children and we did not know this event was taking place when we made reservations. It would have been more pleasant if we had been seated in a different part of the restaurant rather than in the area where families with young children were allowed to run around, being loud and obnoxious. That makes for a very unpleasant evening for the diners and for the staff.
We go to Bar Of America each time we are in Truckee, about 10-12 Times a year. We enjoy the fun bar/restaurant atmosphere, watching the various games on the screens, the friendly staff, and the drinks and good food.
Our last visit was during a wine event in truckee so the town was full. We came to truckee for a hike and specifically have a fun dinner at BOA. I was relieved I had made reservations with a specific request to sit in the bar side of the restaurant once I saw the crowds.
We arrived early and the hostess said she could not sit us in the bar area. We told her we had a half hour before our reservation so we can wait because we did not want to sit in the quiet side. The hostess did not give me much faith that she cared. We had a drink at the bar and watched tables turn over. I checked back in with the hostess and she said she could not sit us in the bar area and sat us in the very quiet (boring) restaurant side. The screen showing the game cannot be seen and my buddy and I had dinner with a few older and pleasant couples. I watched the hostess sit more tables of two in the bar area.
I thought I made it clear in the request and provided enough flexibility to the hostess to at least try to accommodate us. But I realized she really didn’t care. Thanks for the boring meal. Maybe we will try something else next time.
Great time overall! Reservations were on time, pepper poppers are a must with a hand crafted beer to top it all off. The ambiance and toe tapping music lifted up our spirits or maybe it was the combination of great music and great crafted beer. We were visiting with friends and we will include Bar of America on every vist.
In Truckee for vacation... this place had good reviews so we decided to try for dinner. I had the prime rib dinner and it was fabulous! Perfectly done and served with roasted potatoes and asparagus. Hubby had the bison burger & fries and said it was very good (comparable to Ted's in ATL). The cocktails were good - but strong. They were quite expensive ($11) - so was happy that they weren't watered down versions like some places serve. Hubby had a tall draught beer and it was also expensive ($7.50). Needless to say, we drew the line at one each. We ordered an apple crisp to share for dessert... that was really a disappointment - it was stone cold and had way more "crisp" (mostly oats) than apple. Should've skipped dessert, but everything else was quite good, even though it was expensive- but then, so were the other restaurants in the area. Service was good, but we heard the same "pitch" for the "house specialty" cocktail being given to every party seated (a bourbon sweet-sour conconction) over and over again. All in all, a pleasant evening and a tasty dinner.
I had an outstanding experience! See different yet we're no different. The swordfish entree was amazing! The "Cock-tail" beverage was delicious, and the fried oreo beignet style with two scoops vanilla bean ice cream, mint sprig topping for dessert was yummy! I really enjoyed my experience indeed. My pallette danced for the rest of the evening. Shot out to Kevin, Nick, and Chef Ryan D! ~Z.
I met a dear friend who drove up from Lake of the Pines (about 1hour 15 minutes) and I drove up from Minden, Nevada (also about 1 hour 15 minutes) so that neither one of us took the brunt of the commute to meet for a wonderful lunch. Our server, Jimmy, was MOST attentive and very nice. We each had a fancy salad and we both loved our choice(s) very much. We didn't order any cocktails as we each had to drive back but, I'm very glad we chose this restaurant for our lunch. I did make a reservation for an outside table at noon and when the sweetest young woman met me at the door to seat me she suggested another table that would NOT be in the sun. I REALLY appreciated that! My commute could have been worse due to road work but I managed to get through with all green/go flaggers or I would have been 30 minutes or more late. Chefs salad with Roquefort/chicken/etc. was wonderful and her SW style salad was good too!
Delicious foods and excellent cocktails (Thunderbird margarita was terrific). Also nice wine by the glass selections. It is not typical "bar food" btw. Husband had a bison burger and I had pasta with shrimp and crab that were excellent. Will definitely go back.
It does have a nice atmosphere but since we were at a two top table by the kitchen I only gave 3 stars-it was fine, just not the best.
Overall, this place is great. It serves many of the favorites you would expect from a place in a ski town plus others. My kids raved about the mac and cheese and the big bird chicken sandwich is definitely plenty of chicken. Definitely one of the better places in Tahoe.
In my opinion one of the best places to eat in Truckee. Consistent. Great service, great food, great atmosphere. Generally pretty busy...especially on the weekends. The chicken burger is huge and amazing! The bar is great, good selection of wines and generous cocktails.
Had not been to the Bar of America in years. Decided to try it for dinner and enjoyed our meals immensely! Encrusted Sea Bass is delicious with the Pesto Risotto. The Filet Mignonette was cooked to medium rare perfection. The Red, White and Blue was a yummy combination of prawns, blue crab and pasta with a light alfredo-type sauce. Overall, we were very happy from the food to the service.
This restaurant is good for lunch but would not recommend for dinner. We had ordered 3 pork chops entrees and they all came out barely cooked and extremely pink. We asked that they be cooked a bit more, this took forever and when they finally came back out they were way over cooked and very dry. We couldn't even eat them and they were $36 each. Very disappointed!!!
As I walked in rather than greeting my group the hostess asked me to step aside multiple times. When I insisted that I had not checked in and needed to be helped, she rudely let me check in. She never apologized and I found it unacceptable as a patron o the restaurant. The hostess is the first impression for every guest and she was awful!
Our waitress was fantastic, but next time I'll find a friendlier restaurant in Truckee.
This is the 2nd time to this restaurant and both times the food was excellent. The prime rib is the best we've ever had. This last time we had an issue with our dessert to go, as it was supposed to include ice cream. When we got to our hotel we discovered it was missing. We called the restaurant and told them what happened. Within 10 minutes they had delivered the ice cream to our hotel. That's EXCELLENT customer service!
Stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Not too crowded or noisy. My boyfriend and I had the chicken salad and the pepperoni/sausage pizza which was a good combination. Our server was polite and attentive. I went to the bar to sample a beer--was nice that the bartender brought my pint over to our table once he had it poured. We would go back for a meal if we are in the area again some day.
We were a bit taken aback when my daughter asked
For the kids menu to see if their were chicken strips. The server looked straight at her and asked how old she was, my daughter replied 15. The swerved replied with an attitude UH NO, you can't have kids menu. I explained that she just wanted chicken strips and that I was happy to pay for a full size adult portion to which the server again said No, we can't do that.
Won't ever go back she was just rude!
We were celebrating Easter dinner with good friends. Open Table said they would be offering specials for Easter. Unfortunately the specials were just for breakfast and lunch - not dinner. Disappointing that wasn't made clear on website. We mentioned it to our server who checked with kitchen but they said no, just regular menu. Fortunately they have good food and we were satisfied. Just had hoped for maybe a prime rib but only on Saturday night, not Easter!
There was only one waiter covering the entire restaurant so needless to say our service was sub par. When we asked about two items on the menu our waiter explained OTHER items and never answered our question. Also, wrong dinner item was brought out for one of our party.
Our table for 6 was ready when we arrived. 5pm dinner in the middle of the week, so they weren't crowded then -- but when we left they were very busy.
Hubs and I enjoyed a drink at the bar before the rest arrived. Extensive assortment of liquor, and nice choice of beer. Their craft cocktail menu was fun to read: clever names and ingredients.
Our 4 guests (fresh off the slopes after a day of skiing) arrived so we first ordered the appetizer of jalapeno shooters. Several orders of bread, too. Creative presentation and so tasty. All enjoyed except the middle schooler: too hot for him.
Dinner. Three ordered the steak with bourbon sauce. The steaks were huge, nicely marbled, and each came to the table cooked to the diner's request. One ordered the swordfish and really enjoyed. Another ordered the chicken conchiglie and practically licked the plate. I had the sea bass-- the sauce was superb!
We split some desserts: the brownie and the Apple crisp. Again, plate licking good.
A few of us had wine, beer, cocktails during dinner. Cappuccinos, too.
We had a great waiter- prompt, efficient and pleasant.
Love this place!
