The food options were plentiful, classic, and done well. We also appreciated not being rushed.
Bar Mingo is part of our regular rotation. It's small, and can get busy, but they take reservations for small parties, and if you need it, there is a valet lot behind. Cocktails are passable, wine's the better bet. Very nice happy hour options. Static small menu with a good rotation of specials. Fairly straight-forward "upscale" Italian (not fusiony), but not "red sauce" spaghetti and meatballs, either. Mostly easily shareable (for 2-3 diners) small plates, but some mains, too. Outstanding pasta, and seafood is always nicely done. Waitstaff don't always warn you if you order two similar dishes, or under/over order (we just ask now--and they are knowledgeable and helpful, but I feel like you have to ask). For example, at our last meal we had an arugula/beet salad (yummy and fresh, but not unique or memorable), and the very next dish of manila clams came with a heap of dressed arugula; as a server, I would have recommended skipping the salad and/or a different salad...that kind of thing). Kitchen is usually quick, even though the dishes are clearly prepared to order--so you can order tapas style, a dish at a time, if you want. Some of the best things we have eaten in PDX have come out of this kitchen (their chicken livers, as well as their rabbit pasta--both menu standards--and a salad special of brussels sprouts and bacon (hope it's back this fall!). Good spot for Mom as well as out of town foodie friends who aren't looking for anything too maverick or pretentious. Standards (think osso bucco) done very well. Highly recommend.
Great spot for a wonderful meal and excellent service.
While we always enjoy our dinners at Bar Mingo, we have become fans of their jazz Sundays (first and second of the month). Music is usually a trio, sometimes a quartet, organized by Michael Raynor, just the right level of sound to be able to talk as well as enjoy the virtuosity of the musicians. Cocktails are interesting and well made and there are good wines to choose from. Our pastas have always been delicious and portions are appropriate. The chicken livers in caper/wine sauce over toast with arugula is nearly always our appetizer and we've just never had something we didn't enjoy as a second. Ricotta fritters are a not-too-sweet treat after. The staff is attentive and friendly, but not intrusive Love this place!
the best food and service in Portland.......consistently excellent! great chefs. Gino is a great waiter.
appetizers, pasta, seafood, meat. indoor/outdoor dining. five stars plus!
It is always a special night to dine with Eugene, Jerry and Mike. They are the best of Portland’s culinary landscape.
Love the food and the service was amazing! We will be back with our larger family soon!
A neighborhood gem - can always bet on good food and drink.
Gnocchi for the win. Every time. It's light and fluffy with an luxurious tomato sauce.
We had a late dinner so we entered the Happy Hour which was quite cool cause we decided to have bunch of appetizers and one entree to share. They were all good, so is the desert.
Definately coming back...
Great dinner and good wine.
The food is outstanding and so is the service. They go out of their way to make you feel
Welcome and give you great recommendations on what to eat.
Great service and exquisite pasta. First Monday of the month so the jazz ensemble was playing. Increased the sound level but made for an entertaining and enjoyable evening. Hope to return b/f we leave town.
Bar Mingo scores consistently high with me and my husband. The food is always beautifully prepared with a really nice selection of Italian-centered choices. Specials are unique (lamb osso buco) and equally delicious. We split the chicken livers as an appetizer. Then my spouse had the pasta special which was stinging nettle pasta with oxtail rage and I had the heavenly gnocchi with one of the best tomato sauces ever. Seems silly to swoon over tomato sauce, but so many places overdo it and don't let the tomatoes sing out. Can't say enough nice things about the cocktails and available wines. And then there is the always attentive but never intrusive staff. This past Sunday we were pleased to find that a trio was playing for Happy Hour. The music wasn't too loud to converse, but was also excellent quality jazz - lots of good riffs for each instrument plus some lovely melodic sections as well.
As usual, the food was great. Can't beat the lamb meatballs. The service is also great. This restaurant has the feel of the neighborhood restaurant, which makes it very special.
We always have a great experience when we gather at Bar Mingo - food and service are consistently outstanding. Special table requests are almost always honored - and we always feel welcomed and appreciated. Food choices, including daily specials, cover all our different wants. And desserts are so good it's hard to choose. So glad to have Bar Mingo in our neighborhood.
My wife and I have been "Mingonians" for more years than we can count. Food and cocktails, and the friendly, warm service always outstanding. Though we live 50 miles away, we try to go whenever possible.
A new favorite. Fresh and delicious happy hour items, lovely staff, transporting atmosphere...
Cocktails are always excellent, plus there is a well rounded wine list and good advice from servers on matching wine to food. Quality of food is outstanding: always seasonal vegetables and the freshest seafood. Pasta dishes are wonderful.
Reliably superb meal everytime
probably the best happy hour menu in town. Always ready to meet reasonable special requests, such as sharing dishes, half portion requests. Food consistently outstanding.
Replace, great food, great service, great music!
Sat at the bar. great food, great service. for sure going back next time in town.
Bar Mingo is definitely one of our favorite restaurants. For years, we have gone there often and it is always fabulous!
We have been dining at Bar Mingo since it opened and highly recommend it for delicious food, great service and excellent wine list. We keep trying other restaurants but always return to Bar Mingo. Michael, the charming host/owner, Jerry, the talented chef and the wonderful staff make it a special dining experience. We have never been disappointed. The first two Sunday evenings offers an incredible music experience with jazz by the Michael Raynor Trio plus guest artists. It remains one of Portland's best restaurants.
It had great food, which made the small portions disappointing. There was wonderful jazz music that night.
Service was attentive but not annoying or intrusive; food was prompt but I didn't feel rushed; everything was delicious, and the wine pairing suggestions I asked for were on point. Haven't been before but will be back!
Wait staff was very good and attentive. The food was good.
We enjoyed Bar Mingo very much. All pasta dishes were delicious. The wine recommendation was excellent. We loved the pot de créme but he profiteroles we’re a little disappointing. Overall we loved it and will come back soon!
The pasta special was tagliatelle with mushrooms - delicious! I always get the insalata, loaded with pears, blue cheese chunks and candied walnuts, it is excellent. The dessert special tonight was a flourless chocolate almond torte, lovely with cappuccino. Service from Heather was excellent as always. Bar Mingo is one of the best Italian restaurants anywhere.
My husband and I came for Jerry's Risotto Wed night and it was outstanding. My husband is an Italian chef, so risotto is really important to him. He said Jerry's was the best he has had in the US, and would rival even the top chefs in Italy. We came early for happy hour and enjoyed the HH wines and dishes before the risotto, and somehow managed to squeeze in the profiteroles for dessert. Everything was delicious and presented well! The service was exceptional, timing was perfect and we even got to chat with Jerry after dinner. Bar Mingo is in a class by itself! So grateful this magical place is walking distance from our home.
The whole experience was fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!!!!
We had a great dinner. The tagliatelle and gnocchi were both as good as what we’ve enjoyed in our many trips to Italy. Service was friendly, casual, even laid back, which fits the atmosphere.
I love bar Mingo. Portland’s best Italian restaurant.
Awesome meal at one of our favorite restaurants. We shared happy hour oysters and chopped salad and each had an entire.
Paparadelle and grouper were our entrees and were excellent.
A bit slow service, but great food. Fresh pasta options are particularly good.
We always feel welcome here. It has that level of professionalism mixed with family. Some of the menu items are favorites we hope never go away, and we mix those with a special and it’s never wrong. Wine suggestions are always on point and reasonable. Tables are close, but we’ve always found our neighbors friendly.
I had the special petrale piccata and it was delicious. My partner had the lasagna--same as our last visit--and loved it. But be ready to take some home as it's a large portion.
Start to finish, this place did not disappoint! We sought out a place for the best gnocchi and found it!
Outstanding food and service!
