This is one of the best tapas places in Boston. The serving sizes are actually larger then normal for tapas. There are so many choices. I have my favorites but all of them are very good. This is a great place to go to meet with friends or big groups. The bar gets crowded on the weekends and the location is great - right next to Newbury Street. Cant wait to go in the summer when there is outside seating.
I would not recommend this place as a first or second date. There is a lot of background noise and way to many distractions to qualify this place as "romantic". However it definitely made for an amazing girls night out. Sangrias all around the table and plenty of tasty dishes to share-very much the perfect spot for a group outing!
Although the food was good, the horrible waitstaff made this a poor dining experience. There was only one other table (of 2) seated in the dining room. Both our bar order and food order were incorrect. I guess we were lucky there were no guests w/ allergies at the table.
The website advertised flamenco dancing which was one of the reasons we chose this Tapas restaurant over others. When we got there, we were informed that flamenco dancing wouldn't be starting until next year (2011). Bummer! Dining room was way too quiet. Some background music from Gypsy Kings or another Spanish band would have helped, especially since there was no entertainment. Quiet dinner...yes. Lively, jovial tapas dinner....NO!
There were very few people there when we ate there. It must be popular in the summer for outdoor dining. Food was quite good!
Right off Newborn street, but the dining room was almost empty. The was pricey for the quality. Service was good, I just wish there was a little more life in the restaurant. Okay, won't be going back. Best taps in northeast are at Barcelona!
The ambiance of this restaurant was endearing. The performers were energetic and passionate about their dance. The food was not the best I've had but was very good. Particularly the crepes rellenos, delicious! They are well known for their sangria and sangria derivatives, my favorite was the Quijote. I absolutely loved it! Great spot!
I went here with a group from my work and we all had rave reviews. They accommodated our reservation for a larger party size and executed perfectly. We went on a Tuesday afternoon at 4:00, so obviously it wasn't busy, but we felt very welcome. The menu is well priced, from the hot and cold tapas to the cocktails and wine. We ordered nearly the entire menu between the group and all agreed that it was outstanding. Some favorites included the shrimp, black bean and avocado canalones, the calamari (very generous portion), the garlicy shrimp and the tortilla espanola. Our vegetarian guest was more than pleased with the wide array of meatless choices. Apparently the desserts were great too, but I had to leave before they came out. Bravo!
The wine list was the best part of the experience. The food was mediocre; I don't recommend the Paella as I've had better elsewhere.
Great place for big groups!
food made up for sitting there for 20 minutes with no service - no food, no drinks. but, the drinks we amazing. try the loco matador. food was some of the best. we really enjoyed the duck. order about 6 plates for two adults. especially if one of them is a guy!
Great sangria; also enjoyed the paella (small plate). But, Bar Lola jumps into a crowded space of tapas joints in town. You can spend less and have generally comparable quality at Tasca or you can hit Tapeo for higher quality or Taberna to mix it up. Nothing really new here, but a nice night out nonetheless.
I dined at Bar Lola with two friends and overall we really enjoyed the experience. We felt like we had found a little neighborhood gem. It was a nice change from the typical chain restaurants that seems to be everywhere. We loved the live flamenco music and dancer. The intimate atmosphere really enveloped you in the performance. The food was delicious as was their sangria. Our only complaint was the service. We sat for 30 minutes before finally flagging a server down. The dining area is small, so I am not sure why we were not "seen." Although the server said he was not assigned our table, he was serving everyone next to us on all sides. Regardless, he was apologetic and helped us immediately. Our food came quickly + we left happy.
Love the palmeritos and the sangria! This is our favorite place in Boston. The outdoor patio is below street level, so you're outside but its a more intimate setting...you don't have people walking by staring at you as you eat. The waitstaff is always friendly and efficient, and the food is always amazing!
Our only disappoiontment was there was no show. Apparantly the show is every other Sunday and we were on the off Sunday. I don't believe this is clear on the web site. The tapas were good
the bar was jumping all night long. the food was ok, nothing to go into detail about
Great dishes - amazing shrimp and garlic dish! Also loved the Carne de Lola...the sauce was delicious! Also, you must have the Sangria!
I like Bar Lola principally for the sangria, which is delicious! The tapas are okay, but really forgettable-- I prefer Dali or Toro. This particular visit was nice because it was during a weekday, and easy to get a seat at the bar and talk with a somewhat chiller, quieter atmosphere.
We went to Barlola for our anniversary. We had asked for a table with some privacy but were placed in a table in the middle of the room in a nearly empty dining room. When we asked to move to a corner table, they quickly obliged. The tapas were not as good as Solea in Waltham or Dali in Cambridge but were still good; the sangria was very good.
great outdoor patio. delicious sangria. fun waiter. would definitely go back.
Love the food, the sangria is the best I've ever tried, great spot, pretty cool bar with a huge plasma so you can also consider going there to watch a redsox/celtics game. Our server was pretty helpful and nice.
Overall my husband and I had a great dining experience.
We ate here for the first time a few nights ago and loved it. Nice selection of Spanish wines and very tasty small plates. We particularly enjoyed the rabbit stewed in wine with herbs and the pork was amazing. The only somewhat disappointing dish was the fried scallops with tomato-goat cheese sauce- the sauce was very good, but the scallops just didn't work well with it in our opinion.
We loved this place and look forward to visiting Boston again soon. It will be on the top of our list to eat here again.
Love the different food options, very reasonably priced, great outdoor patio and delicious sangria!
Chaotic and disorganized. We ordered a bottle of wine which came out so warm that we couldn,t drink it for quite a while as it cooled in an ice bucket. After dropping it into the bucket, our server never came back to pour the wine. We had to get up throughout the entire meal to help ourselves. Tables are very small and noise level very high.
I was very pleased with Bar Lola. I took a group of my employees here, about eight people. Most had not had Tapas before and were a little skeptical of a place like this. They loved the food and the smaller Tapas plates. And it was great fun passing around all the plates. Every dish we ordered (probably close to 12 different plates) was oustanding. The wine list is not extensive but has some quality Spanish varietals and is very affordable. Service was excellent. Though we sat indoors because it was kind of hot and sticky, the outdoor dining area looked great and would have been very fun on a cooler night. I want to bring my wife and family back.
The food was average at best. Frozen shrimp and a lot of dried thyme made the tapas I ordered unpleasant.
The food was superb, BUT the service was terrible. We had to wait almost 15-20 mins between asking for a waiter even to get water and he actually coming to our table.
We were a large boisterous group (even though we are all in our 60s!) and sat outside. The staff did its best to arrange tables to seat 8 and what turned into 11. The waiter couldn't have been nicer--he helped us with the menu, accommodated when people arrived at various times, and was attentive even though it was a busy night. The food was good but I think more of it was fried than we expected. The salads were fresh and had just the right mix of fruit and legumes. I'm looking forward to going back with fewer people and have combinations of the dishes I liked best.
The restaurant is modeled on the Spanish Tapas Bar which serves drinks and small plates of food. There are no "main courses". Having been to Spain the restaurant was exactly as we expected. Bar Lola has an excellent drink selection and a large menu of tapas plate items including duck raviolis, tenderloin, shrimp and mozzarella sticks. All prepared in their own unique sauce. Each Tapas plate serves one or two people. My wife and I shared plates and ordered 4 different tapas items. The food comes out very quickly in about 10 minutes so you don't have to order all your plates up front. They have both a nice out door section as well as indoor service. We really enjoyed our tapas plates and drinks.
I took a group of out of town guests to Bar Lola. We sat outside on the patio. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious, great sangria, and great wine. Our waiter was very attentive and made some great suggestions off the menu. I would definitely return, this place is great!!
On Sunday nights, Bar Lola hosts live flamenco music and dance. It was the perfect combination of stimulating entertainment, delicious tapas, and great drinks. I had the strongest martini of my life at Bar Lola! The location, atmosphere, food, and service are all amazing! I will continue to go on a regular basis.
we went for a different experiance, the flamenco dancing,(which was great!), but were pleasantly surprised by the tapas. we experianced 6 differnt small servings from a wide variety of offerings. the service was very good, with a knowledgable and accomodating staff. the atmosphere was fun and we enjoyed the patrons at the near-by tables. the best comment we can give is we will go back and bring some friends.
We did not enjoy this restaurant. What a shame, since it was our first trip to Boston. It was the low point of the trip, by far. Our server gave us no information about the menu, and was largely absent. She did not even bring us everything that we ordered! We missed out on an entire dish, but by that point we just wanted to leave. Thankfully, the "missing" dish was not on our bill. I would never recommend this restaurant, and doubt it will stay in business if it continues to have such poor service. For what it is worth, the red sangria was excellent - though I would have loved another glass but could never place the order because the waitress was no where to be found. Also, the food was average.
The food was fantastic and the servers did a good job of bringing the food out in intervals so the table wasn't too filled at any time. The drink (sangria martinis) were exceptional, generous and strong but not overwhelming. Our waitress was very attentive and did a great job explaining the menu and specials. Definitely a great place to check out for tapas.
It was a great place to celebrate a friend's birthday. We ordered dozens of tapas to share, and the quality and quantity of food was perfect. A special treat: bacon wrapped dates. A must try! Save it for the end as it's like dessert. And of course: order a pitcher of sangria. It goes fast, but is strong in flavor and well worth it! The service was exceptionally great. This was the entire party's first visit.
The scallops with goat cheese and tomato sauce were DELICIOUS!!!! and the garlicky shrimp was excellent as well. also, the sangria was great and cheap.
the ambience was very nice but there was no music in our room, some romantic music would have been appreciated. It was pricey. Anyway I would probably come back sometimes.
A lovely experience all around; In my online reservation I had requested a secluded table for my friend & I to be able to catch up on 45 years of being apart. When we were seated in the large, very noisy main room our hostess graciously moved us to a smaller, quieter room and we were quite pleased.
Our server was friendly, unobtrusive and helpful. We had drinks, 4 Tapas selections from the fabulously tempting menu, pastries and enjoyed the atmosphere and delicious food. My pal compared Bar Lola very favorably with the Catalan Tapas Bars he had sampled in Spain. With all the wonderful dining choices in Boston I was delighted to be able to impress him!
My fave: White anchovies on vinaigrette toast.
I will return again--loved it!
Came here for an early dinner on a Monday night so it was pretty quiet. Loved the outdoor patio - spacious, perfect for the summer (heat lamps in the winter). All of the tapas were fun to try - a little overpriced I think, compared to Toro for example. Very fast service - my date and I finished drinks & 6 tapas in a half hour! Would definitely come back again.
