French American
Sister restaurant to the popular New York and London locations, Bar Boulud, Boston at Mandarin Oriental, Boston is a French-inspired bistro and wine bar located in the heart of Back Bay on Boylston Street. Chef Daniel Boulud offers locally inspired seasonal dishes, traditional French bistro fare and an impressive selection of famed house-made terrines and pâtés by Parisian Charcutier, Gilles Verot. Additionally the menu features a handful of signature sausages and burgers, adding an American touch to this French inflected bistro and wine bar. An impressive wine cellar spotlights wines from Burgundy and the Rhóne Valley , including many fine selections by the glass. The interiors are inspired by a contemporary take on the craft of winemaking to create a comfortable and welcoming surrounding for a unique and intimate experience. Bar Boulud serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, all-day dining is also available at the bar. Walk-ins are encouraged.

Overall, disappointing. For the portions and quality of food, it is seriously overpriced. The brussel sprout salad was ok, but the raw brussel sprouts were cut very thick, they should be cut much thinner for a salad. Also they were browning a bit, so overall the ingredients did not seem very fresh. Also the fries were soggy, and extremely salty (couldn't really eat it). The entree scallops are five scallops with a few small carrots, for over $30 dollars. You would think it would come with a bit more as it was an entree, the scallops themselves were delicious and 5 scallops I think is fare, but to come with almost nothing else for an entree doesn't make sense. I left hungry. I would not come back here, and I would not recommend this restaurant.

I chose this restaurant during a business trip and also to celebrate my sister's birthday. The meal and especially the service was outstanding. I mentioned the birthday in the reservation and they surprised my sister with a candle and dessert! We had a wonderful experience there and I highly recommend!

I found this restaurant close to a Conference at the Sheraton - the party included a DC resident (me) a Canadian and a Bostonian - who was thrilled to find a new spot she loved! We each loved our entrees and the ambiance.

Upscale spot for a meal in the center of Boston. Very expensive for what you get, but then it is a premium location!

I'll never go back. I waited almost an hour for an appetizer while the men seated next to me had their apps and entrees. I was told that my food was being made slowly because I had a gift card. I'm gonna gift the 300 left on my card. TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT.

Going to Boston Symphony at 3pm (6 minute walk). We were rushed at the end because service was slow and not very efficient. Never seen the restaurant so busy at that time before. Manager told us it was their busiest day since before Christmas. Clearly there wasn’t enough staff in restaurant and presumably in the kitchen. Thus arrangement has worked well on many other occasions. Will have to think carefully about going there again anytime soon. Food didn’t seem to be usual standard either. Belgium waffles came without maple syrup and then had to wait 10 mins for it to come. Waffle by then cool. Waited 20 mins to order drink and food. Salade Lyonaise was smothered in croutons and hardly any liver or speck!

We had a lovely evening at Bar Boulud and enjoyed our food very much. It's a challenge to find restaurants in the city that you are able to have a conversation without having to raise your voice - this restaurant is perfect for tasty meals and good conversation. The service was a little spotty and the food was not as exceptional during this visit for some reason. It won't deter us from visiting again though.

Cauliflower soup was delicious. Scallops also very good. But a side of creamed spinach was dreadful. It had an almost gooey texture and tasted like someone had spilled salt into the mixture. Panna cotta was a fine finish.

Our first time eating at the Boston location. We used to live near Bar Boulud in NYC. The room was bright and inviting. The service and the wine list were excellent. The Charcuterie was not as good as NYC, too much ham, not enough of the more interesting pate. I ordered the scallops and liked the dish, though it was served warm rather than hot. My friend enjoyed the duck very much. A very pleasant dinner, but not a special occasion place. Very good but outstanding.

Our family's tradition is coming into the city for New Year's day brunch. Bar Boulud was recommended. Location is lovely and our table had a great view of the holiday bustle outside. It was not too crowded and accessibility was great (two senior parents with mobility issues). One guest was gluten free and most items were able to be easily converted to GF. 6 guests total

Pros: lovely selections, good portions, fixed price was reasonable
Cons: Bloody Mary was far too spicy (despite request), one guest's meal arrived significantly after others (it was not finished so she could enjoy dessert the others), server forgot beverage X1, requested bread basket

Bar Boulud was a huge disappointment, unfortunately. Although we had read many reviews regarding concerns over service and quality of the food, we decided we’d give it a try. We were seated in the bar area for dinner which we believed impacted the service flow. We ordered an appetizer, two dinners and a side. The first time the waiter arrived with 3 plates of food, we let him know that none of those plates were ours. He left the table and promptly came back with one of the three plates. We started eating and thought the dish was not what we thought we ordered. Shortly thereafter, our waiter came back to let us know that we had the wrong appetizer. He offered us the first 2 dishes(salads) at no charge since they would just throw them out but took the appetizer with him. Then our side dish of brussels arrived before our appetizer. When we tried the appetizer we ordered, it was really salty. We sent it back. Finally, our main meals arrived and were less than desirable. The Brussels were cold by then, but we ate them with our meals.
We were surprised that such a renowned chef and restaurant at one of the most expensive hotels in Boston would have such mediocre food and service.
Our advice is Boston foodies know what they are talking about, so heed their(and our) advice on reviews and skip Bar Boulud.

We really enjoyed one of their special dishes, which was a Tagliatelle with Duck Confit in a Taleggio Cream Sauce. The Pan Roasted Chicken with Chantrelles, Rutabega Gratin, Foie Gras, and Sauce Supreme and the Lemon Sole Amandine were also wonderful.

We almost always enjoy dining at Bar Boulud, but last night was a sad exception. We were presented with the option of a Tagliatelle with either 3 or 5 grams of shaved, fresh, Alba truffles. Three out of four of us chose the dish with 5 grams, for $90 each, and waited for the fragrance we get from good truffles. The result was a total gustatory failure, with both flavor and fragrance almost complete absent from all three servings. There was no equivalency with our experience in Sinio, Piemonte, where the truffles were sublime. Simply put, we expect more from Daniel and chef Arruda. We will return, but Boulud should not bother offering us any further special dishes. One terrible experience can really make a difference.

Honestly, the value for money is just not there. I’ve been to Bar Boulud about 3-4 times, and while the front of house staff is great, the wait service fails to meet expectations. The attention to detail is not there, and whoever runs this place needs to take a better look at the service. Seating was uncomfortable- there were thorns on the seat booths from the Christmas displays. The food was fine, our waiter was nice, but my water was left empty after the initial fill. While it would have been a fine experience anywhere else, the price you pay for lunch or dinner at this place should demand better hospitality.

I thought having a reservation might allow for a preferable table but we were sat in the back of the restaurant in tight adjacency to another table. The lobster salad was a disappointment. Lobster pieces were very sparse and the dressing was sugary sweet while the bitter chicory was the dominant ingredient. It just didn’t work in my opinion and it was one of the more expensive choices. I have had better meals here before so maybe just an off dish.

Chair had food particles from previous diner, presented with a stained beverage and brunch menu. Server was disheveled looking in appearance and totally lacking in basic social graces.
For entertainment there a group of college kids dressed in gym attire attempting to play jazz, it was pitiful.
It was extremely hard to digest that I was actually dining at the Mandarin Oriental ,a five diamond hotel supposedly. The whole experience was quite shocking for a hotel of this caliber.

The food was excellent, thank you !
