We came for Portland Dining Month and were not disappointed. The rabbit was so good that I wish I could eat it everyday. The restaurant is cozy and we were sat at the bar, but we were entertained by watching the cooks prep all the food. We will definitely be returning.
1st visit, during PDX Dining Month - everything fabulous, highly recommend; will definitely return!
Portland Dining Month was OK experience.
I liked the Choc dessert the best. Pork cho is quite dry and the greens are ok. Risotto is good and the cheese on risotto was the best combination.
Not sure if i would like to come back.
One of our favorite restaurants. Food is reliably interesting and good, nice ambiance, good wine selection
We hoped for a bit of a French bistro experience. Unfortunately, the food was very bland and the wine so-so. We had the Portland dining Month menu - perhaps regular menu is better.
Amazing!! Will definitely be back. Enjoyed them for Portland Dining Month...but the food is tres bon;) Bon apetit!
Very good service and food. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the waitstaff was terrific
Went for Portland dining month. Bar Avignon had a nice selection of options. The salad was okay. I had the pork chop and polenta for my meal and it was delicious. The pot de chocolat for dessert was wonderful, light and creamy. I will be back!
We ate here for the first time as part of Portland Dining Month. I had the pork chop and polenta, my husband had the rabbit. We both went for the watercress soup and chocolate mousse. Everything was tasty and well prepared. Staff was friendly and attentive. It's in the neighborhood of our small business, and don't know why it took us so long to get there. We will definitely be back.
Went during restaurant month. I will say upfront that it is difficult to rate a restaurant when they have to adhere to 3 course meal for $33, which is a pretty minimal amount for a restaurant to produce 3 quality courses. Kudos for the restaurant having choices for each course. Group of 4 of us, 3 who had the watercress soup for starters. All were disappointed. Watercress is peppery, which this soup was not; it mainly had a grassy flavor. 2 of us had the rabbit "pot pie" for the entry which we agreed was very bland and flavorless. Saw friends who were on their way out from dining there and they agreed about the rabbit. The pork chop was very good, cooked perfectly, probably the best entree choice. We got 2 each of the panna cotta and the chocolate pot de creme for dessert. The panna cotta was a sub for a berry crumble, which was unfortunate since now both dessert choices were soft. Not a fan of panna cotta and this one didn't change my mind, but I loved the pot de creme. Our waitress asked about our courses and I mostly gave her honest feedback. Since we were a disappointed overall she poured us all a free after dinner drink, which was a great gesture. She was excellent. Wine list is pricey, with bottles starting in the high 30's, but the bottle we got was tasty. I would say that besides filling up tables during a slow month, the main goal for any restaurant during restaurant month is to get diners to return when it is not restaurant month. I don't thing Bar Avignon did enough here for us to do that.
We love Bar Avignon; everything was amazing
We enjoyed the meal tremendously. Will definitely be returning soon. Excellent service, wondetful selection of beer and wine. Every dish was well balanced and presentation was lovely.
Went during Portland dining month. Started with a French 75 with botanist gin. watercress soup which was smooth and tasty, could have used a little more salt. Risotto with truffle oil was a highlight. Chocolate pot de creme was amazing! Finished with the Laphroig 10 year cask. Would definitely like to return for full menu but couldn't pass up the excellent dining month options.
From walking in the door to leaving the customer service was exceptional. The food was fresh, good quality and visually appealing. Additionally the timing between courses was good - didn't feel rushed but didn't wait too long. We will be back.
A wonderful meal in a cozy and intimate location with gracious wait staff! Highly recommend!!
We love this restaurant. The staff is courteous and efficient. The food is delicious. We enjoyed introducing our friends to this dining experience. Thank you again!
Charming staff. Innovative subtle twist on classical dishes. Unique and wide range of wines. Serene back room.
Three of us went for dinner and had the Portland Dining Month menu. We all had the excellent green salad. There were 3 mains: a risotto, which our friend like, the pork chop over polenta - the meat was excellent, but my husband did not care for the polenta. I had the rabbit in puff pastry with white beans, which was very tasty. All portions, including the salad, where very generous, especially since PDM portions tend to be smaller than usual. The desserts were panna cotta, which was good, but I didn't like the fruit sauce with it. My husband's chocolate mousse was fabulous. The wines by the glass were excellent. The service was adequate. The venue is small and crowded, so it was very noisy - hard to hear each other over the din. I've been here before, and recommend making it an early dinner (they open at 5), as it was less noisy at that hour.
I am a frequent customer of Bar Avignon. Good neighborhood place. Cozy atmosphere, good food.
This place has been a Portland standard for so long for very good reasons:
Great wine list
Great owners: Randy and Nancy.
If you haven’t been, go. Now!
Our first time at Bar Avignon, we were impressed with the quality and preparation of the food, and the excellent service. It is a small restaurant with a full bar and good wine list. Will be back!
We were greeted immediately and seated at the window. This was wonderful as it gave us a perfect view of all the food and drinks coming out of the kitchen and bar. Each dish and drink looked wonderful, making our decisions that much more difficult. We had lots of questions and the waitstaff answered every one thoroughly and without annoyance. We inquired about a drink we saw on an online menu and they informed us it was from an old menu but they said they would figure it out and make it. We enjoyed the Portland Dining Month menu. It was great! They did not skimp on the portions and the choices we top notch. Looking forward to going back soon.
We went for Portland Dining Month and were not disappointed. The service and food were amazing. Great wine selection and great cocktails as well. The tables are a bit cramped together but once you are actually seated that was not a big deal. We will be back!
We came in for Portland Dining Month. The starters weren't impressive but the main course was incredibly delicious and the dessert was the perfect treat. The service was warm and attentive. The chefs chatted with us a bit as we had our meals at the bar. They were very friendly and stayed very busy with the dinner rush. I'll definitely return.
Love it! One of our favorite restaurants for a tasty meal. Love to sit at the bar and watch the action in the kitchen. The staff is always professional and still friendly and helpful.
Ate at Bar Avignon on the first Saturday of the Portland Dine Out event in March 2018. While the food was well seasoned and portions were what we expected in both the first and second courses, both courses were served at nearly room temperature....first course was watercress soup and the second courses were risotto and rabbit in puff pastry, both of which should have been served at a much higher temperature.
Always great--and the hostess (doesn't begin to describe the all-encompassing job she does) on Friday night was great. We had a reservation and the people at our table were taking their time--she managed us all very well! Portland Dining month meal was excellent.
We went for Portland Dining Month and had a fantastic meal! Worth far more than the $33 dining month price. I expected smaller portions, but couldn’t eat the full three course portions they served. Great food, fast and attentive service, and we were seated at the bar by the open kitchen, so we were entertained by the excellent kitchen staff. Small restaurant, so make sure you have reservations. Very highly recommend!!!
This is our favorite go-to place for special occasions or for entertaining friends and guests.
Great surprise! Very knowledgeable staff. We will definitely come back after our trip to Kentucky to talk with Robert about bourbons again!!
We have dined here several times and it is always perfect. Great food, service, bar drinks, and wine. Our go to special date night. Highly recommended.
Yummy food but much pricier than indicated on opentable. Very nice staff and atmosphere. Table ready much later than reserved.
The pork brisket was perfectly prepared; the cocktail "Coming and Going" was fresh, tasty and icy cold.
The Soup and the stringazzi were fantastic. So were our cocktails, and the service was super.
However, the rest of what we ate (prawns, mixed salad, potatoes, marcona almonds, etc) were uninspired , poorly prepared (over cooked almonds, gamey prawns, flavorless salad) and underwhelming.
We’ll be back but only to enjoy a drink at the bar. The ambiance (music playlists, low lighting, friendly servers) was great. But the food was unfortunate and the entire experience was overpriced for its value.
Every single thing was outstanding. We have already told friends. Music was a bit too loud.
Food and service are always excellent!
We've eaten here several times and always have a great experience. The food is delicious and the service is outstanding. We enjoy their cocktails and the nice wine selection as well. It is on our list of places we frequent.s
Even though Bar Avignon is a neighborhood gem, it should be a destination restaurant with its great food, good value, and warm hospitality. Often overlooked in the crush of SE Division restaurant choices, this place feels like it has been there forever and plans to stick around. I sure hope it does.
My three girlfriends and I each had a different entrée and we each relished what we ate wishing at the end that we had spoons to lap up the juices left on our plates. One friend who had the bison short rib pappardelle said the following morning that this could have easily been the finest meal she had ever had. I had the duck and found it sublime, so juicy and succulent. It was refreshing that the four of us could sit across from each other and not have to yell like you do at so many restaurants these days. I was visiting from Seattle and wish we had a Bar Avignon!
First time here but not the last. Small and intimate, we sat by the window and enjoyed oysters and a cheese platter to start, so good. Timing was perfect from course to course and the wait staff was right on point. Make reservations a must and don’t be in a hurry.
