We dined at Bar Avignon during their Beaujolais Nouveau 2017 celebration because cassoulet was being featured on their menu. It was the best cassoulet that we've had outside of Toulouse and better than many of the renditions that we tried while we were in France. It was incredibly delicious. The service, wine and ambiance was excellent as always.

Bar Avignon is one of my Portland favorites. Food and service always excellent.
My friend and I had drinks and dinner on a rainy Portland eve, we were seated in a cozy, warm corner and both had stellar manhattans. Our server recommended the beaujolais flight special, hard not to say no to that and no regrets with our beaujolais flight. I highly recommend Bar Avignon to locals and visitors.

Every visit to Bar Avignon has been a delight. The service is superb. The food is excellent. The prices are, perhaps, a bit steep, but worth it for an occasional treat.

Second time there, first was quite good, although the small plates were better than the appetizers. This time the food was good but nothing jumped out, and for the prices something, especially in this town, should. Chicken Liver terrine was nice, the mushroom risotto was nice, the service was great, really great. If I lived in the neighborhood and had money this would be a great hang, but I'm not sure the restaurant knows what it is. The seafood sausage was bland, and the mussels in a cream sauce felt unfinished and ultimately disappointing. Maybe just an off night in the kitchen.

Nice little spot with good food and service. We had the pork chop and the hangar steak. Both were good, but the hangar steak was just a touch over salted. It's a limited menu, and all three couples around us ordered the exact same entrees that we did. Nice signature cocktails, but the wine list seemed haphazard and not designed around the menu. With such a small menu it would be nice to have pairings listed for each dish, especially since most of their wines were more boutique. We had a nice corner table up front, but with both of us being 6'+, there was very little room for our legs and I had to keep mine in the aisle. Lastly, some padding on the banquet would go a long way in terms of experience. The hard wood surface quickly becomes uncomfortable. Overall, a nice night and we will definitely be back.

We were very disappointed. We had walked by this place hundreds of times and thought it might be a good place to have a nice meal and some wine. We had 7:00 reservations, but were told that people were lingering. The host repeatedly told us that he would ask the lingerers to sit at the bar so we could take seats. No dice. We had our first bottle of wine at the bar. They have us free nuts. Wine was OK, but overpriced. Second bottle was OKer, but more overpriced. French Onuin soup want cold, but sure wasn't hot. It was also congealed. To be fair, they took it off the bill. Mussels were very good. Entrees were ok. $277 later, we left. Won't be going back. Nuestra Cocina across the street is a much better find.

Got together with friends for a lovely meal at Bar Avignon. We loved all our choices, from the opening dish of oysters to a heavenly serving of sausage to our main entrees -- pork, mushroom risotto and chicken. The wines we selected -- with the help of our server -- were perfect for the evening. Would definitely visit this place again. Nice vibe, great service, terrific food.

4th or 5th visit (and we don't live in portland). Once again a smaller menu executed perfectly- will take that everyday. Enjoyed the chilled tomato soup. One taste of the basil on top told you this is going to be special- must have come from someone's garden or a farmers market. No way it came from a store.

The tuna entree was cooked to perfection- rare but not so rare they couldn't get a good smoky crust on it. The pork chop was like a throwback before all the flavor and juiciness was bred out of them. And you can tell how much they care about the food as the accompanying side elements were excellent and paired.

The food was terrific, I always order the roast chicken, so moist and delicately seasoned with a yummy crust. The staff was so accommodating, my friend uses an oxygen tank and they were ready to move a table to make her comfortable. We enjoyed the pick-your-own wine flight, the 3 wines were great accompaniments to the stages of our meal.

Overall, an outstanding experience. My friend and I sat at the bar, where we had a view of the kitchen and could have a conversation with the sous-chefs as they completed the plating of the meals. They were friendly, informative, and very helpful. The oysters were delicious, my friend's hanger steak was excellent, and the appetizers and desserts left nothing to be desired. Service was quick and unobtrusive. No wine or water glass went unfilled. The menu changes often, and reflects the creativity of the entire kitchen staff. I will definitely return.

Bar Avignon has the feel of a neighborhood bistro in France. It is very cozy with a full view of all of the kitchen and its activities. They are known for their wine selection and even have a small tasting room at the back of the restaurant.

This is a limited menu but is always very well done. Bar Avignon is a favorite stop on our visits to Portland.

I am lucky to have Bar Avignon just blocks from my home. Night in and night out, this place keeps delivering. While BA has been around more than a decade and the buzz has worn off, for my money this is as solid as anyplace in town.
The bar serves up great drinks, the kitchen is spot on and the service is terrific. All of this is a testament to the owners who take pride in running a great neighborhood restaurant.
Hands down, this is my favorite spot on SE Division.

The food was overall good, but very overpriced. Fourteen dollars for a single scallop?? The menu also lacks sufficient detail to make an informed decision: my friend ordered something list simply as "Pork" and got a piece of smoked meat (rather dry) he likened to ham. I had asked whether it was a chop before he ordered, and got simply "Yes" with no clarification.
