Bar Avignon Ratings and Reviews
This is still my “go to” neighborhood spot. Night in, night out , BA delivers.
Under the radar but this is still possibly the best restaurant on SE Division and it is definitely worth a trip to visit. I love it more that it is a 20 minute walk from my home.
Great seasonal menu, terrific cocktails, and perfectly attentive service. This is how pros operate.
Bar Avignon is an intimate place, with low key ambiance. Very nice. Great food, and drinks and wine menu. Mussels were excellent but could do without the cream in the broth. Too rich.
Excellent service, and the noise level was very conducive to conversation, unlike other places on Division that are impossible to carry on a conversation in
Phenomenal food - The mussels are subtle and amazing and just melt in your mouth. The chicken liver mousse is heavenly and smooth with no aftertaste -and is served with yummy bread, unlike another local highly-touted establishment that serves it with saltines... The risotto is a tiny explosion of mushroom flavors hitting all the right senses. The lemon drop cocktail, not your typical lemon drop, is smooth and uniquely satisfying with undertones of lavender and/or honey. I highly recommend Bar Avignon for a wonderfully memorable meal.
We very much enjoyed our first time dining at Bar Avignon. My wife, who is a French native, was impressed with the wine list, chicken liver mousse and especially the service. Bar Avignon has a very French feel, without the pretentiousness. It made her feel right at home, as in a neighborhood bistro in rural France.
We dined at Bar Avignon during their Beaujolais Nouveau 2017 celebration because cassoulet was being featured on their menu. It was the best cassoulet that we've had outside of Toulouse and better than many of the renditions that we tried while we were in France. It was incredibly delicious. The service, wine and ambiance was excellent as always.
Bar Avignon is one of my Portland favorites. Food and service always excellent.
My friend and I had drinks and dinner on a rainy Portland eve, we were seated in a cozy, warm corner and both had stellar manhattans. Our server recommended the beaujolais flight special, hard not to say no to that and no regrets with our beaujolais flight. I highly recommend Bar Avignon to locals and visitors.
Second time there, first was quite good, although the small plates were better than the appetizers. This time the food was good but nothing jumped out, and for the prices something, especially in this town, should. Chicken Liver terrine was nice, the mushroom risotto was nice, the service was great, really great. If I lived in the neighborhood and had money this would be a great hang, but I'm not sure the restaurant knows what it is. The seafood sausage was bland, and the mussels in a cream sauce felt unfinished and ultimately disappointing. Maybe just an off night in the kitchen.
Nice little spot with good food and service. We had the pork chop and the hangar steak. Both were good, but the hangar steak was just a touch over salted. It's a limited menu, and all three couples around us ordered the exact same entrees that we did. Nice signature cocktails, but the wine list seemed haphazard and not designed around the menu. With such a small menu it would be nice to have pairings listed for each dish, especially since most of their wines were more boutique. We had a nice corner table up front, but with both of us being 6'+, there was very little room for our legs and I had to keep mine in the aisle. Lastly, some padding on the banquet would go a long way in terms of experience. The hard wood surface quickly becomes uncomfortable. Overall, a nice night and we will definitely be back.
We were very disappointed. We had walked by this place hundreds of times and thought it might be a good place to have a nice meal and some wine. We had 7:00 reservations, but were told that people were lingering. The host repeatedly told us that he would ask the lingerers to sit at the bar so we could take seats. No dice. We had our first bottle of wine at the bar. They have us free nuts. Wine was OK, but overpriced. Second bottle was OKer, but more overpriced. French Onuin soup want cold, but sure wasn't hot. It was also congealed. To be fair, they took it off the bill. Mussels were very good. Entrees were ok. $277 later, we left. Won't be going back. Nuestra Cocina across the street is a much better find.
Got together with friends for a lovely meal at Bar Avignon. We loved all our choices, from the opening dish of oysters to a heavenly serving of sausage to our main entrees -- pork, mushroom risotto and chicken. The wines we selected -- with the help of our server -- were perfect for the evening. Would definitely visit this place again. Nice vibe, great service, terrific food.
