Unfortunately this review is a little tainted since we went on the same day as the Santa Bar Crawl in SF. But needless to say you better be very patient when you go here. It took an hour and a half to get one order of carpaccio and a small pasta plate. Both were great, but I was hungry and I just don't like waiting that long in a restaurant. Also, the sign on the door said reservations only, but slowly as more and more people just opened the door they were allowed to get tables. It became noisy and just annoying, especially since we were waiting an hour for one plate of pasta, which ended up being pretty small. Bottom Line: Great Italian food, but its slow and might be a loud place to sit to sit and wait for it.
The very best and most authentic pizza you will find in the US, and I have spent much time all over Italy. The family is from Lucca, which is not known for pizza, but somehow they are comparable to the best of Napoli and Roma for thin, vibrant, delicious pizza. And the pastas are home-made and equally delicious. Recently they have expanded the menu to offer a wonderful filet and some other entrees. Grazie mille Stefania and Walter!
Oddly, though I couldn't get a reservation for 4 or more, I found a table for 3 and then found there were several open tables. So if you can't get a reservation, you might try to drop in. I had VERY high expectations based on my prior visits. I thought this place had THE BEST pizza. Didn't seem quite as good this time, but maybe it was my order or something. Still a very good restaurant with real Italian pizza and real Italian flavors and real Italian staff. If you want a simple but authentic Italian meal in North Beach, go here!
Baonecci was awesome! We were looking for classic Italian pastas and Baonecci's menu has so many different ones to choose from, and they even make their own homemade pasta! We had the pomodoro, the Bolognese, with bruschetta and a salad to start and everything was fantastic! We also enjoyed their beer and wine selection and finished dinner with sambuca. The service was great, in this family run restaurant, and it was nice to hear stories about the family and the area in general. When we return to the San Francisco area we will most definitely be back to Baonecci!
My out of town friend and I were looking for a restaurant close to Fugazi Theatre to see Beach Blanket Babylon. I had eaten at Sotto Mare a few doors down. I wanted to try something different. All these Italian restaurants are pretty small on Green Street. We made a reservation on Friday night for 6pm thinking it was necessary but it wasn't. The place was pretty empty except for a table of 6 with 2 small kids, a couple and another couple with 1 kid. We ordered two entrees and a bottle of wine. Several others trickled in and I noticed that pizzas started coming out to most the tables as we continued to drink our wine. The large table of 6 with two kids now getting really cranky were obviously having to wait a long time for their food. Several folks came in after us were finishing up their pizzas and we still had no food. We had to ask for bread. No one bothered to come over to apologize for the delay to those waiting for their food nor pour your wine. It just would have made the entire dining experience so much better. Food was good , not knock your socks off. I had Lobster Ravioli and my friend had Penne Al Pomodoro. Since we didn't have pizza we cannot review but it's probably more of a pizza place. Everyone was very nice but I think they could really up their game if they fussed over the patrons more. Just stop by the table once in a while to pour some wine, ask if they need bread, let you know your food is coming out soon. Not so hard, right?
We tried this restaurant based on reviews. We had the eggplant parmesen as an appetizer and the tomato salad with burrata. Both were delicious. We ordered the pasta with bolognese sauce and a pizza with argula, parmesen cheese, and prosciutto. What I liked best about the pizza, is it had a very thin crust. I love it this way so I don't feel like I am consuming a lot of calories. My friends and I all said that we would definitely return to this restaurant. The food was very good.
Bao Necci (translated for us by the owner as "cool") is a multi-generational italian restuarant where you will most likely be waited on by the owner himself. Pictures on the wall of the old family show you the restaurant's heritage as bread makers and italian specialists. The menu is very authentic -- I was married in Italy, so I have some experience with what Italian menus possess. Some of the sampled dishes were fresh mozzarella caprese (some of the best mozzarella you will find) and the italian seafood dishes, such as the frutti de mare risotto (fruit of the sea) was on point. Prepared perfectly.
Not only would I recommend this to a friend, whenever I'm in town, I will return to this gem.
I booked the reservation after seeing glowing reviews, and we were extremely happy with the eaxperience. The tagliatelle noodles were homemade, the the Bolognese sauce was outstanding! Just be aware that noise levels in the restaurant are high---for us it just added to the ambience.
The linguini pasta with tomato sauce was as authentic as my mother's cooking - and that is a high compliment. Simply delicious offering a homemade taste. Literally. We also had the margarita pizza which was very good; just a bit too much cheese for my taste. Note, the menu list has a limited selection but it works.
The recommended dessert by the owner was the panecotta - another great creation and worth the added calories!
The place is intimate and fills quickly after 530 pm, so best to have reservations.
