Banana Leaf Modern Thai Ratings and Reviews
We enjoyed our meal at the Banana Leaf Modern Thai Restaurant. The service was very good and it was very quiet, making it easy to hold a conversation. The food was very tasty and we appreciated being about to request the level of spices (i.e, "heat") to be used in our meal selections.
Banana Leaf is a favorite. I only rated the service as good for today's visit - it is usually outstanding. I think today they may have been understaffed. We wanted a VERY long time before we were even greeted when we walked in. No one was at the front. In fact one group walked out because they waited so long. We had reservations. Then the service was a little slow when they were waiting on our group of 8. (not a huge a group). They were very pleasant, friendly, etc. Just slow service. The food is amazing -- you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They always have great seasonal choices -- keeps the menu fresh everytime you come in.
They have some harvest specials right now that are delicious. I always start with the Thai Tea, which is special. This time I tried the butternut fried rice with Thai sausage and it was perfect. it is served in one half of a butternut squash. My son, sister and brother-in-law each had a rice dish and they also raved about the food. It is not cheap, but worth it. Our service was also very good....no issues.
We went to Banana Leaf for a birthday lunch with my colleagues (party of 7). I made reservations on Open Table that morning, The restaurant is in an old boarding house in Mason, OH. There is a small dining room downstairs and several more upstairs. We sat downstairs.
The service was exceptional as was the food (on a funny note our waitress had a French accent which was amusing in a Thai restaurant - she was excellent). Several people ordered appetizers (tofu tower and springrolls) which everyone tried and liked. For our entrees, we ordered tofu pad thai, spicy mason noodles (my favorite) and pad prik king. The spice level goes from 0-5 with 2 being average. Everyone loved the food and we will be back again soon.
As always, the food at Banana Leaf Modern Thai was phenomenal. We had two of their specials -- Roasted Carrot Curry (Roasted carrot, tomato, red bell pepper, and sweet chili adorn this amazing red curry blended with coconut cream. Topped with Palm fruit and your choice of rice. Recommended with Mussels. Also available with roasted duck, shrimp, steak, chicken, pork or tofu) and Banana Leaf Seaside Platter (Pan seared scallops paired with a skewer of grilled jumbo shrimp and fresh pineapple. Served atop a delectable green curry risotto, mango, wilted spinach, and roasted tomato). Both were fantastic. Our server was very professional and attentive. We ate outside on their tiny patio, and the only downside was a bit of traffic noise (given their location and the time we had dinner) and then later in the evening when the mosquitoes came out! I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant for anyone who already enjoys Thai food (which does NOT have to be spicy, but is always flavorful!) or wants to experience Thai food. Make a reservation!
We completely enjoyed our first experience at Banana Leaf. We were seated right away upon arriving, had a very nice hostess and server - and the service and food were excellent. The menu variety and choices were excellent, and the food was not only prepared to perfection but had a very nice presentation. The atmosphere is very nice, and seated at a window on the upper floor gave us a nice view of the outside/street. Highly recommend this neighborhood jewel.
The Tom Ka, SeaBass and the Tiramisu were all delicious. Artistic presentations. Our server was delightful. So happy that Banana Leaf Modern Thai restaurant participated in Greater Cincinnati Restaurant Week! Great way for us to "try it out". We will definitely come back again. We want to try their version of Pad Thai.....
Overall it was a very nice experience. It was a little underwhelming when we first walked in because there were a few couples just standing around and no hostess for a few minutes. Workers walked by but no one said anything.
Our server was awesome. My husband loved the beer he ordered. The food was really good. It was a little pricey though especially for my chicken pad Thai.
Establishment was lacking experienced help. Appreciate the efforts of the one, but she can't be in 10 places at once and still train new hires who clearly have no prior experience. I blame management for this.
Ordered chef Specialty. Must have been feeling frugal in the kitchen as Pad Thai Groong had four medium shrimp in the entire entrée.
Ambience and noise level were the two good things. The ability to talk in a normal tone in a quaint environment with my wife was very nice.
Poor MANAGEMENT is to blame for this review. Properly managed, staffing experienced workers, AND keeping them happy enough to want to stay goes a long way in the service industry. Hiring experienced people rather inexperienced greenhorns for an established upscale restaurant would be another area for improvement. Finally allowing the chef to be generous with the meat of choice in an entrée would only complete the process. Aside from competing in a California Cuisine Contest, no Chef is going to win any blue ribbons by only placing four shrimp and no other meats in his specialty dish. I've had more seafood in a carryout order of Thai. And I again place the blame for this on management.
The one experienced server in our area ran herself ragged trying to train the newbies and tend to tables at the same time. I admire her efforts. Prime time Saturday night is not the place or time to break in greenhorns.
I love Banana Leaf and have introduced many people to it. The only downside is the food does take a long time to come out and at the end the checks take awhile to arrive. The service was really good this time, our waitress was really nice. I will be back, love the food, always a win with the Pad Thai or the Masaman curry!
This place continues to rock! The seasonal dining dishes provide a great variety to the core menu, which is why my family doesnt get tired of the 45 minute drive for the "great overall experience". Chef Paum, his wife and the fantastic serving staff provide consistent tastes and service.. Until next time!
I was in Mason, OH for a business visit and had decided to search out a non-chain restaurant for dinner. I found this place from an online restaurant search and decided to try it out. It was a quaint place with not too many tables for many patrons. The restaurant is housed in what appears to be a remodeled older home or business building away from the strip malls along Mason-Montgomery Rd. I had made a reservation thru Open Table and was seated soon after arrival. There were only 5 other people dining when I arrived. Banana Leaf Modern Thai has a nice selection of menu items. During my meal, I did overhear the waiter apologize to the other patrons for the delay in getting their meal prepared in a timely manner. I'm not sure what was going on back in the kitchen. As I alluded, the place was not big nor busy, so I can't say that they were slammed with too many meals to cook in a short amount of time. I ordered both an appetizer and an entree and my meal came out rather quickly, though the waiter brought me my entree made using beef when I had asked for shrimp. I ate it anyway and didn't make a big deal out of the mix-up. My food was very good. I will also point out that the hostess asked other patrons who were dining whether they wanted chopsticks to eat their meal with. Sidenote - authentic ethnic Thai people do not use chopsticks. Traditionally, they are a fork & spoon culture. Only ethnic Chinese people who live in Thailand use chopsticks, so Thai people who care about perpetuating a stereotype should not even have chopsticks in the restaurant to offer patrons. (I have traveled to Thailand, and I learned this fact while I was there.) Hearing this being asked made me ponder just how authentic this restaurant really is. I did not see any Asian people as part of the staff who might be Thai during my eating experience. Everyone working there appeared to be Caucasian, so again, not sure who was preparing the meals.
This restaurant was recommended to us by friends. We sat outside in the patio garden where the owner grows fresh herbs and colorful flowers. The herbs are used in the restaurant. There's also a lovely water feature and the garden is beautifully done. I especially recommend this restaurant for outdoor dining. The food was beautifully prepared and delicious.
I brought 14 people for a business meeting from 6 different Asian Countries. The food was bland without much spice even though we ordered it at levels 4 and 5. The soup was sweet and many did not eat it. The food was cold. They had a space on the second floor that did not fit us all and we had to keep standing up and shuffling around to let someone get to the restroom. The waiter was great, but he had to keep running up and down the steps to get the drinks, glasses, food, etc. so we did not get served together. Because of the food, I would not recommend this restaurant
We celebrated my daughter's birthday with a lunch at this wonderful restaurant. My daughter had the panang curry and I had the cashew chicken. Both were delicious. I love that we can select the measure of spice by choosing a number from 0 to 5, 0 being mild and 5 being (I am told) quite hot. The service was perfect and friendly. We will be back.
