What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.6

The incredible People Watching available at Balthazar makes scrunching into a tiny table and overpaying for brunch totally worth it. Say whatever you want about this place, you can’t take away the fact that the kitchen gets it done.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

You never disappoint. I made my reservation through open table but the restaurant did not have me on the list. I showed the maître d my confirmation and he made accommodations immediately.

Reminiscent of La Cupole ( Paris) - excellent food and pleasantly 'busy' atmosphere.

We went at 9pm and even at that time it was so noisy we had trouble talking to each other.
Food is OK but very very bland. Used to be much better food.
Overall not worth it.

We have dined at Balthazar each time we travel to NYC. During this visit we ate 3 times there. Twice for lunch and once for dinner over a 2 week visit. By far the dinner was the worst experience. I ordered the baked chicken and my spouse ordered the steak frites Medium well done. Her steak was Medium rare. The chicken was over cooked and extremely dry. The cous cous and cooked carrots with which it was served was cold
All of this accompanied by a rude and curt waitress. We won’t be back.

Still a delightful spot after all these years and the hype has worn off. The staff are attentive and courteous. I asked to be seated in a quiet spot for a business meal and the hostess was most accommodating. I will absolutely visit again.

When I asked where should we eat in NYC to many friends, the response was Balthazar! They were right, reminds me of “Le Grand Colbert” in Paris....roast chicken amazing at both spots! We will be back!

I celebrated my wedding anniversary on Sunday evening and everybody was so focus on making us happy. My husband is French and he really appreciated the food and the wine list. Also my mom and my brother they were super happy about their choices. Can’t wait to go back to this REAL French Bistro! I want to thank the manager and all the stuff to make us feel special

One of our favourite restaurants in Manhattan. Champagne and a seafood tower on a Sunday afternoon. What a perfect way to brunch. Classic, high quality dining experience. Try it, you will not be disappointed.

Good restaurant but doesn’t warrant the cost. Service was terrific. Food was good but quite pricey. Wine list was so expensive it was prohibitive, which is a shame.

First time visiting NYC and this has been on our list for years. Absolutely worth a trip. Robin P expertly guided us thru the menu. Phenomenal service all around, but she made our meal even better than we could have expected. We sat in the back corner and had a wonderful view of the entire establishment.

We highly recommend Balthazar for a fantastic Parisian Bistro experience.

One of the most consistent restaurants world wide. From the food to the service to the ambience, Balthazar excels in all areas. The servers work in harmony, flawlessly managing all needs. The food is prepared and plated properly. And the wine list is extensive and reasonable. We can’t count the number of times we’ve enjoyed a meal here.

Balthazar transports you into a true, French brasserie. The service is excellent and my waiter even had a French accent!

The menu is small, but the dishes are excellently made. Classic French is what you will find. Wonderful bread and butter is provided. My first course was escargot.....and dipping the bread into the butter/wine/garlic sauce was part of the fun!

My friend had hanger steak with steak frites. Often, this cut of meat can be chewy. Hers was perfectly done medium rare and it was tender and delicious! Steak frites were irresistible.

I had soft shelled crabs meunière.....crabs coated in seasoned flour with garlic and quickly sautéed. Absolutely lucious.

Balthazar has been on the must do restaurants in NYC for quite some time.....but is still usually mobbed....and for good reason. Make a reservation and get there! You will not regret it!

We came back to our hotel around 9 PM after a long, hot day and were delighted to find Balthazar right around the corner. We booked a reservation for 9:30 and instantly felt re-energized for the night. The restaurant was still bustling on a Tuesday night, the food was AMAZING, and we were seated at a nice corner booth where we could relax and enjoy ourselves. We will definitely look forward to returning.

We were in NYC for vacation and wanted to celebrate birthday at Balthazar. We had a wonderful birthday dinner with the family. I The host and waiting staff made the birthday celebration memorable. The duck confit and steak au poivre were very good. Wish I live in NYC so I could come here more often. We can’t wait for our next visit so that we can dine at Balthazar again.
