Balthazar Ratings and Reviews
Balthazar is one of my all-time favorites in New York! The friend I was with had never been to the restaurant and we went for brunch. She LOVED it as I thought she would! What an 'UP' place to be. Staff and clients are friendly and it's a happy place! I'll be back!
I’ve eaten here many times over the years. Lovely room , great staff , great ambiance.
However , I had the steak / frites , cooked perfectly with a lovely crust and medium as asked for but the meat itself was stringy and fibrous , as if it had been frozen meat.
I don’t mind paying healthy prices for simple dishes but I expect a good quality cut of meat to be the starting point. Fresh ( never frozen ) , well hung , well sourced.
We came from Germany to NY for vacation. Balthazar was recommended to us by a german friend who spent a lot of time in NY. We were 3 persons and had dinner at Balthazar and it was GREAT! But: table reservation is strongly recommended. The restaurant was very crowded and the distances between the tables were small.
Excellent food and service!
I had a great meal at Balthazar again this past Saturday. Solo on business, I was treated with the same great service as any group would be. The food exemplary and delivered to the table piping hot. Questions about the fish and wine choices were answered with expert knowledge by my server. I've always had a great time here, there's a terrific wine list and cocktail menu, along with a reliable french inspired menu and will be back again soon.
I had a very enjoyable lunch. It might seem like a strange complaint but the food came out within 15 minutes of ordering. It was good but I felt, for the price, there should have been more food on the plate. The service was excellent. We made a reservation (highly recommend) and only had to wait 5 minutes for a table. The bad parts: no place to wait for your table (the bar was packed at 2 pm) and the restaurant is SUPER LOUD! It was very hard to have a conversation with my friend. Overall I would still recommend Balthazar.
Food as usual was delicious, steak tartare was an absolute standout and the chicken liver appetizer was also very tasty. Good bottle of wine made it a great occasion. Only downside was that according to my wife the ladies bathroom was in a terrible state and had obviously not been attended to through the lunch time rush.....easy to fix...so do it!
Balthazar is sadly living off past glories and is in a process of self destruction. Time and space are of the essence, you are shepherded in and cast out as quickly as possible to a claustrophobic table. Our waiter was lovely, helpful and cared and the place had a buzz, but its London cousin is far superior. The steak tartare was dry and loveless, the rump steak arrived with no resting period, rendering my plate a sea of blood. I sent it back to only be redelivered the very same steak, dry and overdone. Very questionable policy for any restaurant with integrity. The bathrooms were shambolic and dirty with no attendant. Standards have obviously slipped in their greedy quest for putting as many bums on seats as possible. The management need to seriously reconsider their brand and marketing principles. I wouldn't recommend going to anyone who wants a quality experience.
The food was delicious. The service was very Parisian, meaning it was not speedy, but they were attentive in certain areas. The atmosphere is very "Paris cafe" in a good way. The raw bar options are amazing and well worth the expense. I highly recommend this restaurant.
As always, paying Balthazar's a visit for breakfast was quite a lovely experience. We brought a friend who enjoyed the variety of the menu as well as the ambience for the first time. Only the noise due to the many, many seats that are always taken -- especially at weekends -- is a pity. Anyway, the food is really nice and worth going there!!
I love the energetic atmosphere at Balthazar. It is a typical high-volume NYC French bistro, that has great food and friendly service. Love to take my out-of-town friends here as it is typical New York that everyone recognize from Sex in the City. I had the Eggs Valentino this time, but all the eggs Benedict versions are excellent. Great Bloody Mary as well. My 18-year-old niece loved it!
My husband and I come to eat here twice a year and this last time was HORRIBLE! The waiter was rude, Never asked if we wanted more drinks, and my chicken was so overcooked I couldn’t eat it. Such a shame since I looked so forward to eating there and will never again.
We arrived and had to fight our way to get in, there was a queue waiting to see the matre’d and it didn’t seem to be moving. We told a waiter that we had a reservation and were told we needed to wait. 20 minutes after our reservation we were still waiting. We got fed up waiting and being pushed past by waiters so left without eating. Very disappointed.
