Balthazar Ratings and Reviews
Always a favorite when visiting the City; however, no more. We were taken to our table which was not yet set up and told to wait. Then the hostess sat another party as the table reserved for us. Seated at a cramped table, the waiter ignored us, serving on 3 tables surrounding us. We waited ten plus minutes before our waiter approached our table asking if we had decided what to order for lunch. I requested that we had waited and would like to place a drink order. No apologies, just attitude. What a disappointment.
First, they are using papier print outs to validate reservations (its time to invest in modern technology - we are almost in 2018!)
Second, they couldn’t locate my 7:30pm Open Table reservation but were fair play about it, asked me to wait a few minutes while they were working a solution. I got a table at 7:45pm.
Third, the dishes were good (but not exceptionally savory as I would have expected them to be in a French bistro)
Fourth, I found a thick piece of black hair in my side dish (mushrooms) and when I pointed it out, the manager very nicely tried to make me believe it was an herb!!!! It looked like my parents black lab hair, it wasn’t an herb of some kind.
Fifth, the manager apologetically offered to give us a fresh side dish —which we declined politely— so informed us that they would take that dish off of our check.
Sixth, the waiter presented us with the check which didn’t exclude that side dish. He seemed a bit annoyed when I pointed it out but took it back for correction.
Seventh, when he returned, both my entrée and side dish were removed from the bill.
Finally, this place is good but it probably deserves a quick checkpoint on the facility and staff to bring it to the standard it deserves.
Great atmosphere and food. Style of the restaurant is very fun to visit. Its fancy but inviting. My wife loves the French style and so this was a must on our visit after searching for great breakfast spots in NY. It got high reviews previously and this didn't disappoint for us.
Went with my son. The goat cheese caramelized onion tarte was one of the best items I’ve had in a restaurant in recent memory. The service was terrific, though it was busy and very loud. My son has brought several out of towners here over the years and always enjoys it. The women seated next to us came in for the warm chocolate cake with no dinner. Someday I’ll return, hoping to have that tarte once again. Service was excellent.
The food, as always, was impeccable. Service was great and our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive even in the noisy atmosphere. Our table reservation was at 2pm but we had to stand uncomfortably in the narrow, crowded doorway (no space at the bar which would have been better as we could have had a drink while waiting) until they could seat us at 20 after.
I have been to Balthazar's many times. I love going, its a fun night out.
When we arrived this time they did not have my reservation. I was surprised, it was booked, I had a confirmation. Not sure who dropped the ball, the Restaurant? Open Table?
So I was surprised and no too happy. I was with my wife and son. Sons first time in NYC.
The Maitre D' could not have been nicer. The restaurant was very busy. We went to the bar and had a drink.
We got our table and had a lovely dinner.
This is one of the reasons I go back there time after time. The people are wonderful. Helpful.
It could have been a drama but was not due to the attitude of the staff.
Oh... LOL .. and the food is great. A nice twist on French rural fare.
Go, you will like it.
On arrival the place was packed which surprised us for a Sunday night but we were seated fairly quickly. The service was good - waitress forgot one thing but apologised and quickly rectified the error without fuss or prompting. Classic French menu and food was delicious. Excellent wines as well. A little pricey for what it was but has a really relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere which along with the great food and wine makes it a fabulous place to go for dinner. Highly recommend and would happily return again next time in NYC.
Recomendable.
Great cuisine! Breakfast is way more expensive than one would think, but it is very tasty. Ambiance is a bit time worn and in need of a deep cleaning and refurbishment. Especially the mirrors. Tables are very tight seating, so expect to get to know your neighbors well. Wait staff is very attentive. All in all, it's always a fun and tasty must do experience to do when we come to NYC.
