Everything worked out. We enjoyed the evening at Balthazar.
This place is either past its prime or resting on its reputation. Slow service and food just meh.
Even though we had booked had to wait 15 mins for a table. After that service was excellent
Food was average for high prices. Wouldn't go back
Two of us had dinner last Saturday night. I ordered "Short Ribs" ($41.00) which was actually a "Short Rib," i.e., one boneless but nevertheless delicious rib. It was tender and flavorful. It was served with mashed potatoes which were soupy and not much of it, and asparagus pieces, good-- again not many but nice texture and flavor. With the basket of excellent bread served-- and BECAUSE of the bread-- I could eat until full. Overall, despite the small portions, I enjoyed the food. My friend had the cheeseburger ($24 or $26.00) which came with plenty of fries. He said that it was delicious and filling. So we were both happy with our entrees though I was no so happy with the value of mine. I had a Belgian beer, a german, and brandy, all brands I knew and liked. My friend had a diet soda. The biggest disappointment regarding food was with the dessert that my friend ordered which was a scoop of chocolate ice cream ($14.00). It was so small that I could not see it in the bowl it came in and I asked him, "Is there anything in there?" He tilted the bowl and showing me a minute scoop and said, "Do you believe it?" He speculated that it might be especially tasty but found out it wasn't. In response to his grimace as he ate it, I asked, "Sealtest?" and he said, "Not even." I would have sent it back but he is not that way (suffer-in-silence type.) The service was excellent (Lorraine). The ambiance is old-New York brasserie style, very nice. Return? probably not.
Beautiful birthday lunch! Recommended by my son and didn’t disappoint!
Levi was great!!!
Super place but tables are far too close together! The waitress has to pull the table out to allow people to sit down then they are trapped in! Hideous!
Food is good. Staff are lovely, place is beautiful. Very busy, good atmosphere!
The team at Balthazar was incredible! They worked hard to accommodate a special request and make the evening extra special.
I didn’t like my escargot- had a rubbery taste and chewy. They took it back and removed it from the tab. Ambience and service are good. But overall I think it’s overpriced, even for NYC/Soho.
Amazing ! La nourriture le service le beau monde ! Tout était parfait
Great brunch! Great atmosphere in a fun neighborhood.
Booked Balthazar after it was recommended to us for a first trip to NY. Food and atmosphere were great. Attentiveness of staff also good but found the manner of our waitress quite abrasive and she just wanted us in and out ASAP. Shame as everything else was very enjoyable.
My favorite restaurant in New York! I love the energy of this brasserie. Chocolate pot desert still great. But I think the steak fritz could use some improvement. Everything else was excellent as always!
We were really excited to check out this Nyc staple but after checking it out, none of us can figure out why it’s so beloved. I’m starting to wonder if real New Yorkers actually go here or if it’s just a tourist trap. The meal I ordered was pretty close to terrible. The “ceviche” was more like jarred marinated Italian seafood antipasti (definitely not freshly prepared), the chicken (their specialty) was ok but not exceptional and the pavlova was a store bought, hard meringue with some gooey berries. Super disappointed. The staff wasn’t friendly and, while I could maybe see that this could be part of the “old school charm”, the plastic table coverings and fake floral decor left much to be desired. I’m not quick to leave a bad review but if you’re looking for something special, this probably isn’t it....
Went here on recomendations and was not dissapointed. Food was perfect and nice environment. But if you want a quite romantic dinner, then go somewhere else. Quite busy, but we loved it 👍
Balthazar is a must every time I travel to New York. Love their Onion Soup and steak Frite.
Love Balthazar to pieces!
The best French fried in New York
We were very happy to have made a reservation to the always busy Balthazar! We were thrilled when the hostess led us to a real table tucked in a corner from the noise and crowds. My mussels were very good, with an ample supply of French fries. The rest of our group seemed pleased with their sandwiches. Our waitress was very busy and not as attentive with beverage service, but food came out promptly after order was placed.
We'll be back for the wonderful menu selections and frenzied ambiance!
Breakfast here is the best, the only downside is how loud it gets here. I wish they’d put in some acoustics
Terrible food, experience. Very pretty but would not recommend
Service was bad. Ordered a wine from 2013 but got a 2017 - print error in the wine menu I was told. Food was not as you would expect from a restaurant with this reputation.
Amazing- from start to finish! One of our must stops while in NYC!
my favorite choice for all celebrations and non celebrations...terrific energy, appropriate noise level, great food and service, best bakery next door. perfect!!! always my first choice!!
Great fun, good atmosphere, fantastic waitress - a fab night out in NYC!
Perfect place for my birthday lunch !
Could not have gone better !
Always a pleasure !!
I love Balthazar. I used to go every time I was home for a holiday on the night before returning to school and 10+ years later nothing has changed. It is bustling and high energy while maintaining class but not taking itself too seriously. Escargot is perfect!
Very expensive and small sized dishes without any good reason. The food is just average and nothing special about it that justifies the price.
The food and service were great as well as the ambiance!
It feels like you're in Paris!
Always beautiful, fun, very French.
Be sure to reserve..
We live in Seattle and hadn't been to Balthazar since our wedding day in 2009 - thanks for making it just as special 10 years later! We had a fantastic meal - delicious food and wonderful service from start to finish! And thank you for introducing us to Bearnaise sauce! When we asked one of the many servers near our table for aioli, he kindly brought Bearnaise as well and got us hooked! Can't wait to come back!!
Wonderful meal - all of us enjoyed our selection for lunch... Chicken Palliard was great as were the mussels.
Love this place! Top favorite in NYC and love being in SoHo for brunch on Sunday. Excellent service from kind people. Food is always amazing.
Always a fave. Gives the impression of being forever unchanging and...always delivers.
When we arrived we were immediately seated. It was in a crowded space near the front entrance but this is what we expected. Right as we sat down the waiter spilled a drink on the tables right next to us. Therefore the first 15 minutes were spent with waiters changing the tables and cleaning the mess. This was right on top of us because the restaurant is very crowded. We did not get any service other than water for the first 15 minutes. Service was poor and did not match our expectations especially for the price. The atmosphere did meet our expectations but that was the only thing that did.
Always a great experience. Nothing changes with Balthazar and that’s a good thing. Great food and service. Pricey? Yes, but so isn’t everything in NYC.
This is our go to special occasion restaurant and we love it every time. Superb!
Balthazar is a New York gem!! From start to finish of your dining experience one cannot beat this bistro for its ambiance, excellent service, and most of all menu. This has been a five star experience each and every time we are in New York.
