It was a fun environment. Sounds silly but the hats really help set the tempo!
Becoming a yearly tradition of topping off a great weekend getaway!
Very quaint. Beautiful view of the lake. Service was excellent. However, I think it was overpriced.
We loved the restaurant but the food was hit or miss. The steak was over cooked and the muscles were bad but the cod was wonderful and the shrimp was very good. We loved the hats and the restaurant was beautiful. We go to Lake Geneva a few times a years and I am sure we will try it again however, we may have to skip the steak and muscles.
The service was excellent
However, we were rather disappointed by the menu
Apparently the menu is in a transitional period
Our server even seemed a little embarrassed by the situation
There is no appetizer menu at all
A couple at an adjoining table shared our view that this was a glaring omission
A couple items on the entree menu were ridiculously overpriced
Until they get their menu act together, I would not recommend this place
JC was awesome!
Friendly service and lovely views of lake Geneva. Fish boil was undercooked and lathered in butter. Chicken breast was tasty and plentiful.
We were here about 8 years ago and had a blast with a few other girls. The drinks, the food, the atmosphere were great. My best friend and I came back again and were a bit disappointed to find that the small plates were gone and a lot of the fun drinks were too and it was a very limited menu. We had the filet which was very good and we enjoyed the house and it’s charm. I don’t know that I would come back again. 🙁
Charming space in a Victorian building. Fun decor in the different rooms. Menu is simple but all the food was deliciously prepared. The bar is a fun corner to have a pre-dinner drink.
I went for the Friday night Seafood boil, which was superb. You can't get much better food and ambience each room is different, with elegant furnishings and tableware.
The weekend menu is not the same as the small plates menu. My partner and I asked our waitress about this and she was understanding of our mix up and wasn't rude when we paid for our drinks and promptly left.
Relaxing upscale beautiful time!
I was so excited to come back to eat here but apparently it was sold and the new owners need help with there brunch that was horrible and I am only speaking upon the brunch. As a chef sometimes I expect more but I do humble myself and give food a try even when it does not look appealing to the eye. The food choices are super limited now and before there was so many choices it would take coming back another time to try everything. Anyways the made to order omelets great the potatoes augratin tasted like it was box but the worst was bitting into hard sharp plastic. Yes we did flag the waiter she took the piece apologized that was that. But no manager came nothing at the end she took it off the check, but I feel only because I was barely eating and said well I’ll just get drunk it was also my birthday more of a bummer. So I was thrown off from start then I heard a lady say eww what’s that by the lunch area I go over to take a look at the only 5 lunch pots there is a lady explaining all the food saying beef stroganoff which looked like dog food literally beef with broth and thickened with a slurry looked like jello and no cream at all. A chicken Marsala just dried up chicken with mushroom were is Marsala sauce! At about 40 per person cmon now the food should be a lot better this was ridiculous.
I was extremely disappointed during this last visit. As a frequent visitor to the Baker House I was expecting the same delicious food and awesome drinks I usually get dining there. We arrived on Sunday for their brunch and was surprised they no longer had the waffle and pancake station. No biscuits and gravy. No crab cakes either. Their choices were super limited. We came back later for their Venetian Night and they offered a very sad, small buffet. Pastas and sausage! A very tasteless chicken and the same store bought tasting chocolate mousse they had in the morning as their dessert. The previous owner was there along with the new owner. Instead of going out with a bang and offering one last grand dinner she decided to cut corners on everything. Only good thing was our evening waitress, super friendly and attentive! Oh I almost forgot, the gentleman singing during the dinner was amazing! We decided to stay just because of him.
The menu selection was extremely limited, as there were only four options and no choice of sides, dessert, etc. The service was really bad, however, you could tell our waitress was running her tail off. Overall a unique experience with the champagne sundown toast and everyone wearing fun, crazy hats, but the food, service and drinks were nothing to write home about.
The best fish boil we have ever had! Great cocktails and well priced wines.
The brunch was pretty hit or miss. I ate some delicious desserts and salads, but was disappointed with a good portion of the food’s lack of flavor and how dry it was. The ambiance and seating arrangements however were very interesting, making for a unique dining experience. It was a little pricey for the overall quality of food, but it did include mimosas!
Had their Sunday brunch before heading out of town. Was seated right away and the server came by to explain everything. The food is good, but the selection is somewhat limited. Don’t think I would bring small kids. Mimosas were good, but the glasses are really small, so you end up getting a lot of refills.
Service was very slow.
Excellent service and delicious fish boil. A fun evening toast to the sunset and grateful Day.
Loved the atmosphere. We were greeted promptly when we arrived, and seated quickly. The hats were a nice touch. The food was decent, but nothing special, and definitely overpriced. Menu is not clear on website, and we expected to have small plates options, but there were only 4 menu choices. There were no printed vegetarian options, and the kitchen could only offer one item to be substituted with Mushroom. When our vegetarian family member said she’d just eat potatoes and veggies from someone else’s plate, we were told there would be a $10 sharing charge.
One person’s order came out wrong. Most of us had finished before hers was corrected. Our server acknowledged she doesn’t normally work weekends. She was definitely overwhelmed and out of her element.
The ambiance was nice, except for being by the lobby traffic. we’d probably recommend going for tea or cocktails, and skipping the dinner.
Justina made the meal extra special with her warmth and attention to detail. It was clear she really cared if your meal was to your liking, not just lip service.
Salad was pretty small and ordinary. My first mignon was done perfectly. Again, thanks to Justina’s explanation and care.
We felt the place could have been cleaner. The floor was dusty and there was a dead fly under the table which was visible thru the glass table which wasn’t very appetizing. But a fun place for a different dining experience.
Such a fun place.. food was great. Would have given another star but the bartender was a jerk.
Second time we've been here. Service is spotty at best, but the food was very good. The ambiance is fun, and the views of the lake and sunset were nice.
Note that the menu is extremely limited. There were literally 4 menu choices, and one of them was a salad.
It's a unique experience to be seated in various rooms of an old Victorian house. It is also passingly quiet.
Service runs on "lake time", so don't expect anything in a a hurry.
Food was awesome
Not a child friendly restaurant. Only 4 items to choice from off the menu. At the end, the food was good and the drinks were fine. Just disappointed that there were not more options
Good food. Restaurant has tapas entrees on weekdays and fish special on Friday and menu on Saturday had 4 entrees..fish boil, lobsters, filet and chicken salad. Casual dining
The restaurant itself is beautiful. The food was good. We had an issue with the staff. One item that was ordered never showed up. When it was brought up the staff was rude and not apologetic.
Cool 1885 atmosphere
Overall good, but big time delay waiting for solo cook to prepare omelettes.
Food was good! Had a new waitress tho. Great view of lake .
Very fun atmosphere, food choices were limited on the menu (four to choose from) but all of our dinners had plenty and were delicious!
Beautiful brunch, though slightly difficult to navigate, definitely missed the crab cakes. Wish the clientele respected the history and grandeur of the home rather than mostly being sloppily dressed,---t-shirts, gym shoes, baseball hats....
Spectacular ambiance and views, and free-flowing champagne...a very special place, no matter the occasion, but especially for celebrations.
Food was fantastic. Fun atmosphere and a wonderful champagne toast outside for the sunset.
We enjoyed a perfect evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary. To our delight they toasted the sunset and our anniversary. I loved wearing the hat I selected and going back into the past of this beautiful house.
We drove to Lake Geneva from Morton Grove, just for the day. While on the Lady of the Lake cruise, the couple in front of us heard us talking about Baker House. She turned & pointed to where it was & said that they really loved it when they had eaten there. So when my partner & I went there for the Sunday Brunch, we were excited to see if their rating was accurate. Wow, was she correct! The grace, beauty, charm, service, food & ambiance were incredible. We are planning to go up for a weekend & have dinner there also. We were seated on a corner love seat in a beautiful room. The food stations were in a variety of rooms. The huge bar was where we got omelets made to our choices & pastries. The old roulette table had a variety of delicious meats in silver serving dishes. The salads, lox & bagels were on a beautiful sideboard as were the delicious desserts across from there. YUM! Well worth the trip!
We all had the seafood boil. It was wonderful. The wait staff was polite and attentive and focused on making sure your experience is good. We got memorable family photos.
Literally only 4 selections on the menu. No appetizers or salads or desserts just 4 prix fix selection.
Place only had 4 tables occupied on a Saturday night in the middle of tourist season.
Food was cold and tasteless.
I ate here every year for decades and it has always been great.
Obviously won’t be around next year; but neither will we.
Read their website carefully, noting which meals are served on specific nights. We arrived for a 7:30 reservation only to be told that they "ran out" of three different items we requested! Very disheartening. Apparently, if you're not there right when they open, the already "limited choices" become extinct. The server tended to stay away for this reason.
