Backyard Ratings and Reviews
Our experience at the bar before dinner was good. Bartender was lovely and cocktails were interesting and delicious. Once we were seated things went a bit downhill. The Meze Meze platter was decent. My husband said the chicken salad sliders were fine, but overpriced for two small sandwiches. My blue plate special was late and inedible. The meatloaf was paper thin and burnt to a crisp. The grits broke my heart–dry and clumpy with partially melted cheddar shreds on top. I'm southern, I take that stuff seriously. The sautéed vegetables were cold. For the first time in my life I sent a meal back. Our waitress seemed frazzled and forgot to bring our second round of drinks, but did apologize for our unhappiness and comped my dinner. The patio is pretty and the vibe was good. Overall I might go back for a drink, but never the food.
There was a dishwasher breakdown in the kitchen delayed dinner the day we came for an early reservation. Backyard treated us very well while we waiting. Marlissa, our server, was attentive and seated us with drinks and snacks. The wait became a pleasant drinks and conversation time rather than a bother.
Great atmosphere. The service was excellent. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. Everyone loved their meals. There was a group at the bar (3 guys) who were very noisy and we had to shout to each other in order to hear what we were saying, however, they left halfway through the meal. I would not recommend this restaurant for a "quite meal".
We enjoyed it, however,
I am so in love with Backyard! I've been twice - once for brunch, once for dinner - and each time it was wonderful! The staff is friendly and helpful and the food is incredible. It is a hip without being hipster, the outdoor dining area is gorgeous - basically, if I could eat here every day I would!
We were the first table seated in the 'backyard' for dinner though all tables were sat when we left. Each table had children which was fine with us as we had two with us also.
Very short menu which was even shorter as they were out of some items. The food was good though somewhat expensive for what you got portion wise. The happy hour menu was pretty good, we had a nice bottle of rose, and a couple of beers. Food, we chose a few items from the happy hour menu (skip the kings kolache!) for appetizers then shared all the sliders (which was about the only thing they had beside the shrimp & grits special which I thought might make us an entree).
Our server was very nice. Can't remember her name, she's from Australia though if that helps? She even brought out some toys and a coloring book for my 3 year old:)
We didn't find sleepy!
I reserved about a month in advance. The manager I spoke to (Ian) was very helpful and friendly. They called to confirm the day before. It was hard to find a restaurant that would take reservations for such a big party (we were 15). Bogota took us. The space was tight, but it's expected in Park Slope on a Saturday night. We had toddlers and babies in car seats, but were able to squeeze in. The food was amazing and the service even more so! We started with sangria and empanadas, they were so delicious. They have a kid's menu too, which was perfect for our little ones. It was a lively place, so we didn't feel too bad if our kids were a little noisy. I would definitely go back again, with or without kids.
Although I was super late for brunch, they were more than happy to accommodate my party and I. The food was great! The staff is very helpful if you are unsure about what to drink or eat. Overall I enjoyed myself. If I didn't live in the Bronx I would return much sooner than my next planned visit.
I went here for New Year's Brunch with my girlfriend. Surprisingly, the place wasn't very crowded. I had a very solid southern-style brunch with eggs, pulled pork and beans. I feel a little unprepared to fully judge the place since it is called "Backyard" and I went in January when the literal backyard was closed. The inside was pleasant, nothing special. Friendly service.
Backyard is on my block so we frequent there for brunch, drinks, and other fun--but this past visit, I organized a large group Sunday brunch there for 12 and my expectations were surpassed! Although they normally take reservations of up to 8, they accommodated our group of 12 with no hassle AND had our table ready and waiting when we arrived in their adorable private outdoor "backyard" area. All of my elitist Manhattanite friends immediately fell in love with the ambiance and soon thereafter, the menu! The service was on point--our waiter was very friendly and helpful, and always ready to refresh our drinks. We all LOVED our meals and had the best time! EVERYTHING on the menu is delicious! I definitely recommend this hidden gem.
My brunch Phat Stax between French toast was fantastic. Eggs were cooked perfectly and the tastes went very well with each other. Can't wait to try it with pancakes next time! $5 brunch mimosa was far better than you'd expect. My friend and I were very pleased and are looking forward to returning.
Quite literally a backyard filled with dining tables, gnomes and a buddha. We both had the Quesadilla/Burrito (eggs, chorizo, caramelized onions and red peppers) and shared a side of bacon and grits. This may sound like typical brunch fare but it was well prepared and very flavorful. The service is friendly, too. The whole place gives you a sense of being among friendly neighbors. We really enjoyed it and will be going back for more!
First time going to Backyard and it was a really nice experience. I took my mom there for Mother's Day; sat in the backyard with gnomes all over. I really like the spot for the vibes--relaxed, welcoming and unpretentious! The food could have been better (i.e., the chicken) but the Shrimp N' Grits is pretty tasty with creamy hominy and a polenta cake (the polenta cake could have been more seasoned). I would recommend this place to others based on the service, drinks and certain dishes (i.e. the Shrimp N' Grits and the fig & blue cheese flatbread).
It was my first time at Backyard. Some of their dishes were really good, especially clam chowder, lobster sliders and creamed hominy.
I was underwhelmed by fig & blue cheese flatbread as made with dry figs and not that many to begin with. Short ribs was cooked to perfection but really salty.
I would probably go back.
Maybe I did not fall in love with this place because I did not go for brunch , but I was not impressed. The outdoor seating area is wonderful and it is right around the corner from where I live so I really wanted to love it. The menu is pretty much limited to flat breads and sliders. My sliders were decent , but my friend got the meatloaf and did not like it . She said it was oddly tough .we both left hungry . Perhaps we will give it another try at brunch .
Neighborhood Must -- Good Food -- a Living Room type of comfortable -- a No Rush social atmosphere with Friendly Servers.
Sunday Brunch with Cocktails was Notably Delicious and Affordable.
8/17/2013 was my first time and I definitely would return to try more.
