We made a reservation for 5 PM. When We got there, the doors were locked and the lights were off. I called and a machine picked up so I left a message canceling our reservation. If you're not going to open on time, don't offer reservations. We were time-crunched and had to scramble to find a place to eat. The entire experience could have been avoided. I will never try to go back and I've been telling everyone about this awful experience.
Not at ALL what is advertised. No staff (literally) for almost 5 minutes before 1 happened to walk put from the backroom. She gave us menus (which only offered a fraction of what their site claims they offer.) Another staff member came out to the bar to rattle off the plethora of items they were out of, not even trying to hide it from customers (which was ONLY myself & my daughter.)
We ended up leaving, incredibly disappointed. Spent all of $9.50 on a Long Island Ice Tea (nope...they didn't even comp the drink as an apology.)
I would NOT suggest Backstage to anyone.
Really great hamburgers and fries! The menu is limited but everything we've tried was delicious especially the vegetables with the plank steak and the Reuben sandwich. There is virtually no dessert menu. This is a perfect spot for a quick supper before walking a block to the theater. Make a reservation on national tour nights at Proctor's
This is a small bar that serves food...you will get fed efficiently, no frills, food is o.k, it's bar food...steaks, burgers, sandwiches... it is not a fine dining experience, and your open table reservation will probably be meaningless, as they don't seem to pay any attention to Open Table reservations at their end!
Great location for friends to meet before heading to the theatre. Food was great. The bartender/waitress was alone that night and handled everything (both floors) and everyone with a great attitude. And she really had to hustle!!
Great place to go for a quick bite before a show at Proctors. Reservations are a must on show night. Great beer selection and good pub food. Somewhat limited menu, but the convenience of being right next door to the theatre is worth it.
We went to the Backstage for a preshow dinner and it was very good! Fish and Chips were super and the Margarita was one of the best we have had ever!
They were out of all sugar free drinks, limited wine list and 2 of the entrees they were out of. Very limited menu however location is great if attending the theater.
We arrived there for lunch and found out they are not opened for lunch so had to find some place else to eat.
We were surprised they were out of diet soda and a couple of the entree choices at 6pm. While service was friendly and prompt the limitations were disappointing
Very limited menu... basic pub grub. Great beer selection. Great service. Food was as expected.
Was going to a show at Proctors. We were a bit late and that wasn't an issue. Food was good. Drinks were good. Short walk to Proctors. I would do this place again for sure. Try the fried pickles!
Quick easy dining option preshow. Very convenient as it is directly behind Proctors. Waitress was honest about wait time and encouraged us to get our orders in as they were booked to the max capacity. Service was efficient. Solid pub fare.. no complaints. Only down side was the upstairs dining room was a little chilly.
Made reservations on-line because we had tickets to Wicked, however, the reservations were not available to staff. They were extremely apologetic, stated that they were having difficulties with the on-line reservation system and seated us at a nice table in the bar area. Service was a tad slow, but completely understandable because they were swamped prior to the show. Very professional and courteous. My wife's fish and chips were slightly greasy, my "Rachel" (Reuben sandwich with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut) was awesome and the sweet potato fries were even better. Overall I would, and have, highly recommended the Backstage to friends. As an added bonus and as their name implies, just cross the street and walk down a short sidewalk to the back entrance to Proctors. (Parking next to the restaurant is only $10.00)
Had dinner before a show at Proctors. Bar was noisier than we wanted so we ate upstairs. Not much atmosphere up there but much quieter. A little chilly, though.
Food was good and portions were good sized. Prices were good.
I would go back again.
I can't answer the above questions well because despite using Open Table to make a reservation, when we arrived we were told they couldn't take any additional reservations for the evening. I showed them the confirmation I received and was told I made the reservation too late for them to accommodate us. I was very disapointed - they shouldn't use this service if they can't fulfill requests in real time. We scrambled to find somewhere quick and close by to eat at before the show started.
Great place to grab a bite to eat before a show or anytime. Have been there a few times and never disappoints.
This was my 2nd time eating here before a show at proctors. Outstanding food and service. Best corn beef reuben ever!
I never found out if it was good or not They wouldn't seat us saying they didn't get the reservation.
Food quality was great. They seemed to be short staffed for a show night at Proctors. A burger and fries and a turkey sandwich with fries took almost 45 minutes from order to table. Which seemed really slow as it wasn't that busy.
Over the years, I've had many experiences with this restaurant. It changed hands a couple of years ago, and I thought they had their act together. From what I hear now, the partners split. Unfortunately, the partner that did the ordering, I think, is the one who left.
There were 4 of us in our pre-theatre party,6:00 on a Saturday evening. Three of us ordered the chicken parm which was highly recommended by our waitress, another ordered a burger with mushrooms. Waitress comes back and says there is only one chicken parm left. So we take that order, then reorder some other entrees. Two of us had ordered balsamic vinaigrette for our salads. Waitress comes back and says there is only one left. One little cup. How can you run out of the most popular entree, and balsamic vinaigrette????.
Food we had was good, although there were no mushrooms on the burger as ordered.
Service was Ok...there have been times when the service was atrocious.
It's such a convenient place if you're seeing a show. Too bad they can't seem to totally get their act together.
Not handicapped friendly, and their website says nothing about it. Food was fine but space is limited.
Usually go there when going to Proctors . The last visit was to celebrate my birthday. Going again on 17th to celebrate a friends birthday. They have yummy French onion soup and chowder.
We had a group of 12. Nice seating area upstairs that accommodated us all nicely. The restaurant was out of a few things (meatballs, turkey, ham, etc) so ordering was a bit difficult as several people wanted spaghetti and meatballs or meatball sandwich or club sandwiches. Overall, food is good and well priced. Location is excellent as we were seeing a show at proctors after dinner.
Went for a quick dinner before a show at Proctors. Great burgers and quick, friendly service
Basic pub food was especially good as was the waitstaff. We had as good a bacon burger and Reuben sandwich as we have ever had before a show at Proctor's just a short stroll away. A great, inexpensive and friendly place to grab a bite before or after. We look forward to going back before our next show in the spring
Went before a show at Proctor's. Food was good and price was right for bar food. Good selection of beers on tap. They were aware of show time and kept us on track to be done in plenty of time to make the show. Great choice for before a show.
Enjoyed dinner in a great casual atmosphere before heading to a show at Proctors. Food was above average bar food, you can appetizers, sandwiches, burgers and full meals. Our servers were attentive and always smiling. They apologized for only have 2 people on but you would never know it because we didn't have to wait for anything. This is definitely the place to enjoy a casual well priced meal before a show or anytime you are downtown. I would call it a "hidden" gem. Can't wait to go back!
Customer service and food was great. Would definitely go back.
Great place to have dinner before a show at Proctors Theatre. Good value and friendly.
We go just about every time we go to a Proctor's event. Food, service is very good. Always friendly
There was only one waitress who was also the bartender. Bar was full. They were out of two of the items on the menu and when my burger came out, the bun was completely black. Ate the burger without the bun and no one even asked about the bun when our plates were cleared. I thought this would be more of a restaurant, but it is definitely a bar with food.
We like to eat at the Backstage before going to a show at Proctor's. Good food, service, ambiance, and reasonable prices.
We went before a play at the Proctors. Had a couple of beers and salads. Good food, quick and so close to the theater. Would make reservations if going before a show.
We had a reservation for 6pm. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. There were not a lot of people there so I expected fast service. We each ordered a burger and nothing else. We didn't leave until around 7:10. Why it took over an hour to order, receive, and eat a burger is something I'll never understand.
Our dinner was good and service was good. Timing worked perfect for our show at Proctors.
Ordered boneless wings as an appetizer. They were cubed pieces of white meat chicken. They were good but not what we expected. My wife loved the Reuben and my Chicken Caesar salad was good. The prices were reasonable. We were very satisfied with our experience.
Got there early and we were seated right away! Waitress was sweet, very friendly and let us know about the specials right away. The only thing that was a bummer was that some of the items on the menu aren't available on a night that Proctor's has a show and that's really the only time we are in that area. Food was terrific. Glad we picked this place...will definitely go back.
Early dinner (5:30 Monday) for our group of 4 -- our first experience at the Backstage Pub and Grill -- found the restaurant a little under half full. One person ordered a Rusty Nail, which although it was an unknown drink to the woman tending bar, to her credit she looked it up and made a perfect Rusty Nail. The salads were well chilled and above average quality. Although the kitchen was out of strip steak on Monday, the second choice (flat-iron steaks) were cooked to perfection. Food presentation was excellent, and the portions were generous without being excessive. Service was friendly, attentive, and accurate. This is one of the 2-3 best casual dining choices in the Schenectady area. We will definitely return again.
We were going to a show at Proctors and wanted a place close to the venue. Backstage Pub is a great little spot with a menu variety that can please everyone. The service was excellent and the food was delicious! Great place to grab a bite before or after a show. Great onion soup and the home made fries were a pleasant surprise.
We have been regard here for more than 3 years. We live bringing friends for dinner before a proctors show. There us variety in the menu so we enjoy our meals. Unless they're short staffed the food and and service makes for a great start for a great evening!!
