A fantastic experience at Backhouse - The food was incredible, drinks were very good, and the service was impeccable. Not to mention at the end of the night we were the last patrons awaiting our shuttle back to Queen's Landing and the owner bought us a round of scotch while we waited.
Absolutely the best! In food and service, an amazing experience. I can’t wait to go back!
Very tasty and a beautiful evening. The staff (reception, waiting, sommelier) were all charming and helpful.
Made to wait close to an hour to be seated despite having a reservation, no explanation was provided.
Courses arrived extremely slowly, we received the same course twice by mistake. Eventually got our mains after spending 3 hours there in total, then we decided to leave and abandon the remaining desert courses and wine pairings. No apologies from the chef or management.
A reminder that food in small plates with high prices doesn't make it fine dining.
Great evening for convivial fun - just that bit too noisy for a romantic evening, but for everything else, go for it!
Very average food. Def not worth its price. Overall not a bad place but not for that price.
Loved it. Surprised as the location was not inspiring at first - in a small strip mall. Inside a terrific ambiance and overall a highly enjoyable experience on all fronts
The Tasting menu was fantastic, each course was well thought out and the pairings really made the meal special. We were impressed with the staff, diversity of food and interesting takes on classic dishes.
My parents and I drove down to Niagara-on-the-Lake to celebrate Mother’s Day. We made reservations the week before, and looked for restaurants with availability for the time we were planning for. Backhouse was one of the options, and upon reading some other reviews, we decided to book our brunch there.
The plaza the restaurant is in is right at the corner, and from the outside, the restaurant is unassuming and does not look like much. Once you open the door, you are welcomed by wood tones, the glorious smell of burning wood, and friendly staff. We were brought to our table, were they asked us for our drink orders and gave us a menu for their special brunch set courses. We made our choices, and that’s when the show really started.
Each course was carefully thought of. The taste and flavour of the dishes brought you to nirvana, and the execution was impeccable. From the in-house bakes breads to the house cured meats, every element had its place in the grand scheme of the entire meal.
Backhouse should be on your list for your next trip down to NotL. We’ll definitely be sure to return.
Beautiful facility, excellent all around service...delicious food.
Fantastic food -- on par with Relais & Chateaux cuisine quality. Great staff. Wonderful overall experience. Looking forward to a return visit.
As always Backhouse was wonderful! The team works like a well-oiled machine while still remaining friendly and professional! :-)
We eat at Backhouse whenever possible and desirable. We are local to the peninsula .
This is a serious restaurant and we have enjoyed it through several years.
Eat, have a life. This is a good place. Do not take photos.
Love one another and maybe got to the theatre or have some more wine. Walk home if you can.
My boyfriend and I dined at Backhouse on Friday, 5/11/18. We were spending the weekend at Niagara-on-the-Lake and I'd read some wonderful reviews of the restaurant online, so I made reservations in advance.
We loved it! We had the pre-show, smaller tasting menu, since we had tickets to the Shaw Festival Theater that night. Each course was delicious and the presentation was just gorgeous.
Leland, our server, was so personable and knowledgeable. He was excellent!
We are definitely returning when we have more time so we can experience the full tasting menu.
Staff at backhouse go the extra mile to make your night out an ‘experience ‘ . Knowledgeable , accommodating and very guest - centric .
There is good food and then there is an amazing dining experience. This was an evening to remember and savour. The service was outstanding beginning with Stephanie in booking our reservation, Bill when we arrived and Leeland and team who excelled at service. We chose the Signature Menu of 8 unique tasting experiences. Each was exquisite from the Dip Dip Egg to the Pork Loin and white Bean cassoulet. This is a well trained and run restaurant. Well done Team. Can’t wait to return and experience what Chef Ryan Crawford will have created for us to experience next.
Excellent, high-end food experience. I would recommend to any foodies or those who enjoy a culinary adventure.
Loved the fact that everything was farm to table and seasonal. Menu a little too limited but really enjoyed sitting at the counter with a view to preparation on the meal. Service was outstanding!
Absolutely incredible experience. We each did a tasting and the food was phenomenal. Service was top notch. Must do if you are in the area.
service is wonderful; food so beautifully presented and creative. This time less of the wood fire I felt in the tasting selections but fantastic just the same
Chef’s table is a must. Enjoyed the Signature tasting menu and it was a lot of food. Tasting menu in general is a must. The cocktails were solid no matter what we asked for. Met the owner and Ryan was a great guy. We will be back as soon as we can.
My wife and I tried Backhouse a few years ago on a lark as it's in this sort of off main drag strip mall. The outside isn't telling of what it's like when you get inside. The decor is fantastic, a bit industrial with lots of iron and wood. The wood burning cooker at the tasting bar is so cool.
The food is fantastic, the wine list is great and the service is outstanding. I will say it's not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
OMG. My wife and I were visiting NOTL from Australia and the B&B we were staying at recommended Backhouse. We looked at some reviews and booked a table before we left Australia.
So glad we did. We are lucky in Melbourne we have some great restaurants and we have eaten on this trip at some good places in LA and Chicago but nothing-nothing-comes close to the overall experience at Backhouse.
I had the tasting menu with matching beverages and it was superb.
I cannot recommend this place high enough and it is worth returning to NOTL just to go there again.
If you are ever in NOTL do NOT miss Backhouse.
It is so good it should be in Melbourne.
Tasting menu was full price for the offerings. Most plates were good to great. However, midway through dinner the service slowed to a crawl. Our dinner was 4 hours which was too long and we lost interest.
Many thanks to Ryan and the rest of the team who provided an amazing experience for my wife and I to celebrate our anniversary. The attention to detail both in the dining room and the kitchen is amazing. I would highly recommend this restaurant for people looking to experience what the best of Canadian dining can be.
We did the chiefs tasting menu and it was awesome, I hade the premium wine pairing also and loved every moment!!!
As mentioned above the food and the service were excellent, but the price makes it a place to use only for special occasions.
They were super accommodating to a plethora of allergies.
Overpriced food that has gone down in quality and presentation in just a few months time. Food selection - 'northern cuisine' supposedly local but the wine selection is from all over the place including Spain. Somehow we do not get this twisted concept and logic.
When asked why the wine is not from the same place of origin, got an answer about some government regulation. Totally absurd.
Anyway, their service is attentive and friendly but their food quality has gone down.
Went for a birthday celebrations and sat at the counter by the kitchen. Everyone made our evening special from champagne to desert. The food was an excellent experience. Absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back!
Exceptional in every regard. One of the two best restaurants I have ever enjoyed anywhere. Recommended without any reservations at all.
Don’t be deceived by Backhouse location off 55 on the edge of the old part of town. After our visit, I rank Backhouse as the best restaurant on Niagara on the Lake. (Treadwell’s is a very, very close second). Go with a tasting menu. Every course was outstanding with and prepared with nothing but first class local ingredients. Service is impeccable. The timing of each course was perfect. The servers were very knowledgeable about wineries and farms Backhouse sources from and the relationships behind this sourcing.
We had a great time at Backhouse, the Chef's tasting menu is absolutely delicious. If this place was in Toronto it would have been fully booked for months. We sat at Chef's table and had a great conversation with the sous chef about restaurants and their food. The chef at Backhouse also makes great wine, which we tried. I highly recommend this place to anyone that likes tasting menus and trying something local.
Exceptional food and service and atmosphere. Will return.
I'm sure everyone knows by now, but this restaurant is amazing. They serve local, cool climate cuisine carefully crafted in front of you (get Chef's table seating if you can - worth it). The Chef's tasting menu, with wine pairing was phenomenal and I was so full by the end of the 9 courses (and a bit loopy, with all the wonderful local wines). From outside, it looks like nothing to note, but once inside you're transported to a warm, inviting, space, with a beautiful ambiance.
The food is not cheap, but I still suggest this place is a great value, because the quality is just through the roof.
Go to this restaurant.
We came into niagara for a weekend get away with no solid plans. Someone we met recommended Black house, and we were so grateful. It was a fantastic experience. We did the chefs tasting with the pairing. Ambiance was great, service was great and the food was sensational.
Backhouse lived up to it's billing. Creative F2T winter foods that did not fail to shine. There was a unique intimacy in the tasting style of serving that allowed for us to enjoy conversation between courses. Service was efficient and not intrusive. Not an inexpensive meal, but worth it in my opinion.
be prepared for 2.5 hours in the experience, if you are it will exceed your expectations.
Always great, a must experience. They were clsoed for the day they booked, opened up and honored our reservation. my fourth experience here, it's always a different menu. Expensive but worth it!
Great meal, service and value. hands down recommend the restaurant and the chef tasting menu.
Everything was done superbly.
