Food was great but it took so long to be served all course(nearly 3 hours). Cocktail was not good as food. Better try wine. I wasn’t sure about the tip but I gave it anyway. Overall fantastic food but considering price, taste should be good.
Excellent ambience, food and service. Loved sitting at the bar!
One of the superb culinary experiences in Ontario. Take your time easting. The Chief's Tasting menu with the wine parings is the way to go if you can afford it
Great hidden gem. The smell of fire wood burning right when you walk in makes you happy. The table side seating where the chefs good make it an interactive experience and the food is fantastic!
One of the best dining experience. Very attentive to details. Must go to when in Niagara area. Chefs tasting menu is strongly recommended. Wine selection is one of the best including sommelier suggestions. One of the finest anniversary dinners during the Canada visit. Thank you.
The tasting table experience is the way to go at this exceptional restaurant. Excellent service and a friendly staff contributed to a wonderful evening for my wife an I.
The peak dining experience of our weekend in Niagara on the lake.
Really creative food, great wine choices knowledgeable and the service people are very engaging and friendly.
We will be back!
Food and service were great as was the knowledge of all the staff especially the server and wine steward. I recommend more comfortable seating for the 3 to 4 hour long meals.
Our dinner at Backhouse was delightful. The ambience is fun – outside the restaurant is almost
incognito; when we entered the maître d’ looked just like the Bard come to greet us. The menu
is innovative and flavor filled. Each course from the tasting menu showcases a different dish.
One of our tasting menu items was bread (grilled, served with two kinds of butter) and another
was Just Dug Potatoes (yes, dug on their farm that morning). These two courses let what could
otherwise be just meal accompaniments shine. My husband enjoyed the duck liver pate. We
both thought the egg appetizer was amazing. The Heritage Chicken was perfectly grilled,
succulent. Our waiter Mangus made our dining experience richer by telling us about the farm
and ingredients that were just harvested. Bill, our sommelier, suggested a wine perfect for us,
one that enhanced each portion of the meal (we chose not to do the wine pairing).
My boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try to celebrate our mini vacation. The service was very good and the food was delightful. We had the chance to make a reservation to sit at the counter and watch the chefs make the meals. It was fun and entertaining to watch. The food itself was also very delicious and some were more special than others. We would definitely try the restaurant again if we are ever in the area again!
A great experience! Sit at the counter for best enjoyment.
Entire experience was amazing. Tasting menu was incredible but pricey. You do have other option of ala cart.
By far the best restaurant in NOTL area! The tasting menu equals the best in NYC, and all the ingredients are fresh and grown locally. I cant say enough about how delicious and innovative the courses are. Service was perfect (thanks, Anna!) and our sommelier, Paul, recommended local area wines we loved. Really, really excellent!
Pretty Amazing 11 course meal... Just try it! Takes a couple of hours to go through. Excellent food, Excellent Presentation, Very Friendly and knowledgable staff. I just wish they had a chocolate desert at the end
My husband and I tried Backhouse for the first time last Sunday (Sept 9) and thoroughly enjoy our meal. We each selected the tasting menu and standard wine pairings. The food was delicious and the wine pairings well selected. The dessert was particularly good. We'll be back next time we're in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
If I could give this restaurant more stars I would. From the very minute we stepped foot through the door with it's rustic but modern decor, we felt so catered to. The chef checked us in and then sent over complimentary champagne because it was my nieces birthday. We sat on little fake animal skin blankets which was perfect for a cold night. With the ambiance of the open grill front and center, bundles of wood all around and the colorful abstract farm artwork really completed our first farm to table experience. We all ordered from the pairing menu where we enjoyed what was like an 8 course meal. We first had the dip dip egg. It was in a half egg shell presented on what looked like a real birds nest. It was a frothy poached egg mixture that you dip a piece of toasted bread into it. It was pure heaven!! While we ate this dish, the chef came out and said that the birds nest were from out back and he talked about eating this dish as a child with his mother. Then we were served fingerling potatoes that were pulled from the ground that day! The corn chowder with the popcorn added for texture was just unbelievable. Everyone got a different meat and we all shared and it was all so so good but the lamb ragu was by far my favorite. Everything was prepared so beautifully and the timing of each dish as to when it came out was perfect. The waitress did a wonderful job explaining everything and how the pairings of wine and beer were selected. They gave you a generous amount of wine and beer as well. The bread that came from 19 year old yeast and the different butters. The desserts were amazing. There was two different desserts including a little butter cake for my nieces birthday. Everything was so so good and we did not want to leave! The waitress told us that the farm is just a few miles down the road and that the staff all work there as well. Everyone was friendly and so knowledgeable. At the end of our dinner, the chef gave us a hug good bye. We will be back for sure.
The tasting menus are tremendous and good value. No-one at our table of six opted for the paired wines. We agreed the lamb was better than the steak. The only complaint was how long the meal took. We arrived at 8:15 and were seated at 8:30. The meal lasted 3 1/4 hours, which was excessive. After 10 pm there were not too many other tables that were being served. We thought the last four courses could have been served much more quickly.
Excellent food. Have to be with friends and have lots to talk about between courses. Soup course was so delicious but the portion needed to be much larger.
FROM BUFFALO AND ABSOLUTEKY LOVE THIA RESTAURANT. ANYTIME WE HAVE FRIENDS VISITING WE ALWAYS MAKE DINNER RESERVASTIONS AT BACKHOUSE.
OUR FRIENDS FROM FRANCE CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE.
THE SOMMELIER IS ALWAYS PLEASANT AND HELPFUL
Second visit after the first in 2016 (I live in Hong Kong so can't get here often!) and did not disappoint. The Chef's tasting menu was outstanding and each course memorable, the highlights being the dip dip egg, frothy, delicious corn soup concoction and duck liver mousse with tiny brioche loaf. I much appreciate the attention paid to detail, which has not wavered since the early days. Nice to see 2027 wines still on the menu - a feature of my first visit. Best wishes for the restaurant's continuing success and will be back as soon as possible!
Awesome experience, great ambiance.
Not cheap though.
Mark did a great job of going the extra mile while preparing parts of our meal! He even explained where things were locally sourced from! Amazing experience with foods I would not normally see on a menu. Presentation was fantastic.
Food was excellent. I had the lamb and my wife had the chicken. We were both concerned when we couldn't cut our food. Turns out that the knives were useless for cutting. The lamb was melt in your mouth but the knife couldn't cut it. Service was great.
Outstanding in every way!
Awesome experience dining at Backhouse. The dishes are creative and incredible. We did the tasting menu with wine pairings. It was a great lunch. The corn chowder was out of this world.
An incredible team with purposeful execution and equality ingredients. We were humbled by both the food and the teamwork showcased by everyone.
One of our most memorable dining experiences to date! Such a treat. Highly recommend the chefs tasting menu. They were very accommodating, as we chose to substitute the liver mousse for a mushroom dish and they were also accommodating to my boyfriend’s walnut allergy. Each course was so unique and just full of fabulous flavor. The head chef and owner, Ryan, was so humble and friendly as were all of the kitchen staff behind the counter. Truly a special night that we’ll never forget!
Every time we go to backhouse it's a special treat, and it does not disappoint. Best food I've ever had! Would recommend to anyone who has the time and budget to enjoy such a beautiful meal
Fabulous food. Great atmosphere and service. Best kept secret in a stripmall.
This was my third time to Backhouse. The first two occasions were phenomenal. Granted, the first time was for lunch and sencind time was for dinner in November (when the major tourist season was over). On both of those occasions, we really enjoyed the food, the timing of the dishes and the wine education. They seemed to take a lot of time explaining the Niagara regions and the wine. Unfortunately, perhaps I picked the wrong Friday night for my third visit (Labor Day weekend). It was exceptionally loud, so much so that it was hard to hear our waitstaff. I learned nothing of the wine, which is a shame given the cost. The timing of the dishes became slower and slower and the lamb dish was horribly over cooked (and lamb is not good when it is over cooked). For the money, it was very disappointing and I hope it was not the normal. I thought I had finally found a place in NOTL. Not sure now...
Excellent food. Wine pairing experience was a desaster. The somelier are pushing for some cheap, out-of-region wines, that do not match with the food.
My absolute favorite. The food and creativity is top notch. Wine pairings are spot on. Just very expensive meal.
Too much bread marketed as small plate dish. Booths are extremely uncomfortable. 13 plates is excruciatingly long.
Awesome chefs table experience. Our second time here.
Best meal we had in NOTL. Would recommend the chefs tasting menu. And don’t skip the bread!
Excellent service! Staff is very efficient and friendly. Great food presentation. Food was very tasty. On the pricey side for what you get.
So simple, and each course keeps getting better and better. I’ve never pined for cauliflower before!
This was our fourth visit for dinner and we found the food and service to be as usual above par and expected.
There was a very noisy party of seven/eight that interfered with our dining pleasure. This was also a disappointment for another couple that we spoke to in the parking area.
By far one of THE most impressive and spot on tasting/pairing experiences I’ve ever had! Every bite was beautiful paired with their extensive wine list. The Chef’s tasting menu was out of this world. They even put a chicken wing and pickled egg on a skewer in your Caesar. ;)
I can’t wait to go back.
Wonderful creative fresh food that is prepared and served exquisitely! Love sitting at the counter and watching them prepare the meals and getting to ask questions about the food and preparation. Tasting menu is always changing and always wonderful.
