We were once again impressed with Backhouse. We did the wine paired dinner and the chef's choices were creative foods perfectly paired with the wines. Locally sourced foods and wines from Canada in January! You don't get more creative than that!

Variety of local seasonal foods served in combinations that most would not think of but are wonderful. Love sitting at the counter to get a chance to interact with the Chef and see the work.

We actually booked this on open table by mistake, when we realized the error my sister remembered that no shows were charged on their credit card $99 so we had to go. My sister was trying to book Garrison House. But, we read reviews and Backhouse sounded amazing so we followed through. Sadly very disappointed. The waiter was a “soft talker” and we could barely understand him. The first two appetizers we were told were mandatory - didn’t enjoy either. Ordered the aged beef to which I was told it was 125 days aged, asked what that actually meant and couldn’t hear explanation. It was fatty and tasteless, waiter never came back to ask how it was. Sisters pork was good but also very fatty. Dessert was great but I left after a three hour experience starving. Even with the bill on the table, another staff member came and asked me if I wanted another wine. Generally when the bill is on the table that would mean no, I was tempted to ask if he was buying, to make a point of showing him we have our bill. Too many different servers and participants. I wanted to take home all the fatty meat to my dog but every new person at the table made that seem like an unlikely task. The restaurant was beautiful inside. Not worth the $200 we spent with just one glass of wine and two entres ordered. Too pricey to give it a second chance. Won’t be back.

LOVED everything but the food. Presentation was very good. Eggs were better last time. Beets mediocre. Pork VERY poor. Plum dessert better last time. Treating family to birthday celebration so we certainly didn't want to ruin our fabulous time by complaining. Since it was your first day open after being closed, was quality compromised? Was it a different chef? We thought we had discovered a gem . Sad and disappointed.

We have been fans of Backhouse and visited several times. This time however we had the feeling that maybe the place has jumped the shark. There is a growing sameness to the menu and what was once a wonderfully innovative menu has become derivative. The same dishes appear again and again and since it's claim to fame is intriguingly innovative tastes we're disappointed. Really sorry to say that this time we saw a vast gap between value and price.

Vegan options were pretty good. Maybe a little more effort into them. Very salty food.
Ambiance and experience nice though.

As always, an excellent meal shared with friends. Well prepared local farm to table foods. Very friendly, and knowledgeable staff, who can recommend the perfect wine to pair with the meal and share the stories of where the food came from. Great experience and fair price.

The overall experience at Backhouse was amazing. The waitstaff and chefs were attentive and open to any questions we had about the food or what was happening. The courses of the tasting menu were well thought out and the wine pairings were spot on. Wines I would never have normally drank were perfect accompaniments to the food they were served with. This isn't a restaurant I'd go to every day, but it was a perfect place to celebrate our engagement in Niagara on the Lake.

Warm and inviting atmosphere and great service. There were some very nice touches on the various dishes, for example the first Course -' Egg&Bacon'. But I am not a fan of sous-vide cooking for meat. There was no evidence of a promised final grilling of either the beef or pork loin - a soft, pale, bland result with none of the caramelizing you would get on grilled or roasted meat. I think sous-vide is better for seafood. Very expensive, although we enjoyed the special November fixed price 'Uptown Menu'. Not sure I would go at full price.

Really, this is an expensive restaurant but if you want something that really knocks someone's socks off, this is the place. Not a single bite was off. Service was attentive and fantastic, never missed a beat. Decor was engaging. Everyone in the place cared that they were creating a dining experience. And, for Niagara on the Lake? You would have to go to Toronto or NYC to match this place.

One of the best dinners ever. Great value too as we were lucky enough to partake of their Uptown Tasting. It was almost like it wasn’t a tasting because their serving sizes are like regular servings in other restaurants. Same goes with their wine pairing pours, very generous! Would definitely come back here again.

This is my second birthday in a row and as always the team at Backhouse did not disappoint! They've always outdone themselves, and I can't think of a better way to spend my evening. My partner and I have recently become vegetarian, and although the meal was super delicious, it lacked some of the warmth and richness that needs to be added when the fat from the meat is gone.

unfortunately, we came with, perhaps, too high of expectations. the restaurant serves local seasonal food, prepared to order, so we expected to wait. but the portions were uneven...the largest, hungriest person in our group, chose a fish entree which was meager...several of us ordered from the tasting menus. while we expected smaller portions and more courses, the pork bolognaise was basically a tiny portion of minced pork, with a big bowl of rigatoni. not what one would expect from a tasting menu that varies from $99 per person to $69 per person. there was not a salad on offer. the roasted carrots were very under-cooked; in fat hard to cut.
those of us who ordered a al carte were better fed. however, there was really nothing inspired about our food. none of us was offered a second glass of wine. and considering that the restaurant was 80% empty, our service was slow and inattentive. to add to the discomfort, the restaurant was cold, a few chairs offered a sheepskin for one's ice-cold wooden chair. at over $200/couple, i would say, the value is not here..sorry.

Great restaurant located just a couple of blocks off of the main street in Niagara on the Lake. Don't be fooled by the understated exterior, this place serves farm to table creative cuisine. We were looking for a nice dinner in town and stumbled across this place on Trip Advisor and Yelp. Take the counter seating option as it provides an intimate dining experience and interaction with the chefs. Every course is prepared within arms length and thoroughly explained down to each ingredient. Chef Angus walked us through all the way to his selection of vegetables from the garden. He quaintly referred to digging the potatoes that morning as "hunting for Easter Eggs." Recommend the Chef's tasting menu, but they do serve a la carte if you have a smaller appetite.

We did a smaller tasting menu . Food was great ! The wine pairings we’re disappointing for the price . They pour very tiny amounts and for the price of 2 people we definitely could have shared an incredible bottle of wine . I would have rated this restaurant higher but they seemed short of help last night . One server and the sommelier having to rush around as it was busy. For the fine dining price point we expected a little bit more .
