Thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Back When Café. Choices were adequate for our group of 7. The veal was especially outstanding. Great cocktails, attentive service, quaint atmosphere. Very close to perfect.
Loved the food. Not real busy so staff was attentive.
As s vegetarian I always appreciate your meatless options. I ordered the pasta with peas and truly was shocked at how small the portion was. Especially compared. To the other meals which were meat. It was embarrassing to have finished eating so far ahead of the rest of my party. The others took most of their dessert home while I was so hungry I finished the whole thing. Otherwise we love the food and always bring guests here
2nd time there---disappointed and won't be back----steak was below average, veggies had no flavor and potatoes were also disappointing----best part of meal was the salad and their crackers----and we got off on the wrong foot after making the reservation, getting there right when they opened, and not getting to sit where we wanted---the table we wanted, sat vacant the entire time
Cozy fireplace in relaxed atmosphere with attentive, courteous waitstaff. Lobster ravioli a favorite with many varied menu options and daily specials. Nice dessert menu to choose from. Definitely a nice dinner date venue where you never feel rushed to order, eat and leave. Plan on feeling like you’ve had a special dining experience when you walk out the door of the Back When Cafe!
Back When Cafe was truly a dining experience. I was looking for somewhere special for celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere is wonderful and service is excellent.
Most important, the food was excellent and we never felt rushed. We had plenty of time to enjoy each course (appetizer, entree, dessert) before the next one arrived at our table. For appetizers, I would highly recommend the bacon wrapped artichoke heart. For our main course, my wife ordered the SeaBass and I had the Ahi Tuna both were excellent. For dessert they actually surprised us with a complimentary dessert which was a perfect finish to the meal.
I definitely would recommend the Back When Cafe.
Very nice people, great food, very friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended for a special occasion.
Our food was absolutely delicious. It was the right temperature with gorgeous plate presentation. The wait staff was friendly and very conscientious to our needs. We were seated at our table at the time of our reservation. Excellent choices of wine and the coffee and desserts were fantastic 💕
The Kitchen initially overcooked my lamb but came back with a wonderful piece of meat. Overall experience for me was 3 notches above average. I would definitely go back.
Outstanding is all I can say!!!
Great experience - consistently very good!
We love this restaurant and enjoy a meal there every time in Wausau, The food quality is always top notch. They were of the mark this past Friday. Plenty of staff, very slow service. Past reviews are showing this. Its worth the wait.
It was a first time at Back When Cafe and everything about the experience was positive. It was the BEST meal I have had in a long. We enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the experience.
We have dinner at the Back When on most special occasions-Valentine’s Day, annerversy, etc. Have never come away disappointed with our selection.
It was our first visit (came highly recommended) and was a very pleasant experience. Unique (and delicious) menu options. Good service.
Phenomenal. Great service. Can not wait to go back again
Great food with great bar choices. Service is superb. Is one of my favorite restaurants and I travel alot. Thank you.
We had an excellent experience. Our server was so nice and took great care of us! Food was excellent as well!
Wonderful experience in every way - we can't wait to come back and try other items on the menu. One of the best meals we've had in a very long time (and we live in Madison, WI)?
Lovely place if one is in Wausau overnight. Downtown and an easy walk from hotels there. Wine list is good and an especially good value. The food was quite good and the portions generous. All in all, a very nice evening.
Warm Welcome on a Cold Night! On a recent visit the Wausau the temperature hovered around zero, so the warm hospitality of Jeff, the bartender and Craig, our waiter went a long way to warm us up. Jeff's lemon drop martini was delicious, Craig's service was attentive, but not intrusive and chef's bacon-wrapped scallops, Kolbe, brie, spinach burger and salmon entree were tasty treats. Thanks to the chef for accommodating the no carbs for the salmon entree! Aside from the table by the window being chilly, the experience was great and well worth repeating. We're hoping to return during summer to enjoy some al fresco dining!
Love back when! Wausau is lucky to have such a quality place!
Great food and nice ambiance.
I loved the atmosphere, the food and service spectacular.
Outstanding as always!!!!
Great restaurant. Great food and wonderful bartenders.
Food was delicious and the service was first rate! We enjoy having locally sourced food to choose from in an inviting atmosphere.
What a Wausau find! The food was fresh and delicious. The wine list was extensive enough to please most tastes. We had the Stags Leap Artemis and it wasn’t overpriced. The Delightful staff made our evening one to remember.
Service was good and quick. Food was overpriced for the quality and quantity. Since it was so expensive we thought the food would be fresh or made from scratch, but was obviously not. There was a hairball inside one of our cloth napkins and every beer we tried to order off the beer list, turns out you don't actually have that beer. The waitress even said the beer list was very outdated. Really? Pretty disappointed with the overall experience. After we left we went up the street and had another (better) dinner at another place.
This was our second visit and will be back. We were there for NYE dinner. Our reservation was at 8:30. Had appetizer, meal, desert and bottle of wine. They were out of our 2 first bottle choices, and were out of my first choice of entree. But what we had was delicious. My wife had Lobster Ravioli and I had Pesto stuffed Salmon.
It was great good! Unfortunately, my husband had to ask 3 times for his second glass of wine, and 4 times for a second cheese spread (to 2 different servers). They were busy, but wasn’t too busy, so not sure if that was just the the holidays. The food though, excellent!
Great food as always but very poor waiter this time.
Good... Probably one of the best appetizers we have had in some time, parmesan/scallops... Mixed bag when it came to the main, their meatball/marinara - tasteless...but the gnocchi was very good
Wonderful meal, great service, cozy spot by the fireplace!
The service and the food were excellent. I was a little disappointed that we were charged for refills on soda. If that is their policy i dont have a problem with it but to offer a refill without letting us know there is a charge is a little disappointing.
Delightful evening for our anniversary.
Our waitress was able to split our bill with certain items we ordered between 2 of us and other items between 3 of us. She was great at not rushing us through our meal allowing us time to enjoy each other’s company. She checked on us several times during the course of the evening. It made the evening delightful. The food was delicious from appetizers to dessert. The atmosphere was relaxing.
The Salmon, Harvest Pasta and salads were outstanding! Casually elegant atmosphere with excellent service with friendly and professional staff. We were given a small cake (with chocolate ganache and a candle) in honor of my wife's birthday. It was delicious!
We met Joy, the original owner & founder, and she was delightful.
Book club holiday dinner enjoyed the privacy of upstairs dining room We were waited on promptly and pleasantly by Sean. Delicious food, lovely presentation. Always a delightful experience!
Like a fine dine in New York City but without the wait or attitude
