The Back Burner has been a solid standby in Hockessin for years now, and I nearly always enjoy my dinners there. This time was definitely very good -- everyone enjoyed their food, and they managed to find a glass of dry sack for my dad! (The waiter could have had more knowledge of the bar's offerings, though, or a more graceful way of handling unknown requests.) Still don't have great vegetarian options, but since my wife and I are pescetarians, and the fish was quite good, that wasn't a big problem (and my wife, the obligate vegetarian/pescetarian, wasn't with us this trip, alas).
It was a great choice for an early Father's Day dinner, though it was noisier than I remembered -- one reason we ended up there rather than Buckley's, the family's other idea, was because we thought it would be quieter. Still, the octogenarians did all right with conversation despite the ambient noise.
I had a great experience. Our server was very friendly and knew everything about the menu and the ingredients. I was very impressed with her. The choice of food was good but it was not seasoned well. The Baba Ganouj had no salt or any other seasoning. The criissant and chicken salad was very, very dry. I did not know what to make of it. But all in all I enjoyed the room, the clean linens, the cleanliness in general. Just taste the food before you serve it.
Really enjoyed the experience. The soft shell crab special was the star. Wow. Good ambiance, very good for a date but also approachable for family dining
We spent 4 days in the Berkshires and this was not only the best dinner we had, but it was outstanding. The cocktails were creative and wonderful. The scallops were done to perfection.
Food was decent. We had salmon salad and free range chicken. Neighbor had cheese board which looked good. Our waiter would ask us questions and be looking elsewhere. We felt invisible to him and really invisible when he dropped off check and never came back! 20 min later he realized and apologized but he was just not there for the customer. Don’t sit in the bench seats- we were getting bitten by some insect resembling a sand flea of sorts. Won’t return although hostess was very nice.
Hadn't been here in many years, and expectations were pleasantly exceeded. Reasonable pricing and very good food.
We love the Back Burner Tavern. It is our favorite local spot, Anya is always attentive and friendly, its like visiting an old friend.
The appetizers were fine. We had to send our hamburger back because it tasted as though something was wrong with it. My crab cake was extremely dry and I had to ask for some type of sauce to make it palatable. I have been in the catering business for forty years and I was looking forward to dining at the Back Burner. I was sadden with our experience.
We had a good time at the Back Burner. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was family-friendly yet comfortably formal. The reason for only a three star rating was the food. It was ok; cooked well in general but lacked flavor. The pasta had good consistency, the sauce was pleasant, but the only distinctive taste was tomato, no seasonings detected. Those that had the crab cakes said they were just, "ok" also. Not bad, just mediocre.
Food was nicely presented but it didn’t seem seasoned and lack flavor.
While the menu looked very interesting with some creative concepts, execution was well below what I expected based on reviews, and service was not very attentive. The chicken I ordered was significantly overcooked, some unexpected (and unpleasant) substitutions made on the fish special we ordered, the crabcakes had no seasoning (though also not much filler), and I observed two different waiters filling bread baskets using their bare, ungloved hands, and another waiter adjusting a food item (ungloved) on a plate as he was walking out of the kitchen. I would definitely not recommend and will certainly never return.
Janet was wonderful!
Everything was good but the BIG surprise was half priced appetizers and $1.00 oysters. Plus when the bill came even our wine was half priced! This is a wonderful deal every Monday.
Just not my kind of restaurant. The food was very average - nothing noteworthy. One dish had sides not at all as described. The waiter apologized when he brought it -- said it had changed, but he hadn't been told and would bring something else if we preferred. Service was good, but not a place I'd return to.
Back Burner is a very convenient spot if you live in the Hockessin/Pike Creek/Kennett area. Nothing special, but consistently average. Wait staff tries to do a good job.
As always, lunch was great! Janet was an excellent server. The Back Burner never disappoints. Thank you.
I love the Back Burner and it is one of my go too restaurants. I was there on Friday the 20th sat in the back room with the FirePlace, our waitress was wonderful , funny and very attentive. However Monday night was not so.. I took my daughter there for a Birthday Dinner table of 5. The waitress had no clue we were there most of the time, I had to get other waitresses to find out where our food was. She forget my daughter salad, and the desserts took more than 20 minutes to come out and the bread pudding which is usually warm was cold. So as this is still my favorite place, please make sure you get the service you are paying for.
Birthday celebration for mother and brother worked very well. Mother wanted an outstanding crab cake, which was indeed the case. Brother took advantage of the shrimp & grits, which was also well prepared. Tuesday is burger night (50% off), so I took advantage along with the pumpkin & mushroom soup; each was excellent.
Delightful lunch with good friends. Probably spent two hours so we really enjoyed good coversation and good food. Wish BB were closer but it's worth the one-hour drive from Philadelphia. Sorry to learn Creations Gallery is closing. Always nice to explore there.
It is always a pleasure to reconnect with friends at the Back Burner. The service is attentive, but not intrusive or rushed. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. I love this restaurant.
My wife’s Caesar salad was drenched in dressing. They brought a new one that was better, but still overdressed.
My halibut was very good.
Service was fair, our server took our order and got lost.
Went here for the first time to celebrate a birthday. Food & service excellent on a quiet Tuesday night. I had the crab cakes & my husband the scallops. Both excellent!! Definitely will return.
Went for Easter Brunch. Food and service were very good. This was our first experience, but we will return for a regular lunch or dinner.
We went for Easter Brunch and everything was wonderful, from the fantastic service to the delicious food. We all enjoyed our individual meals (Hangover eggs, Crab Cakes, Shrimp & Grits) and shared multiple starters (Oysters, Stuffed Mushrooms, Better Cheddar). We love the Back Burner and would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Everything was excellent. Took some friends with us and they were very impressed. They want to go back.
Great specials and amazing service!
Wonderful late afternoon lunch. Tina provided great service! Drinks were really good. Planning on returning in the near future.
Wonderful restaurant, delicious food, lovely decor. Always a go to for any reason.
We have dined at the Back Burner twice in the last 5 years and the consistency of the experience does not disappoint. The food is extremely well prepared and presented. The chef introduced a new dessert the evening we were there and it was almost too pretty to eat, but the taste was fabulous too. The Smoked Manhattan cocktail was a true twist. It is a great place for a special occasion or just a quiet dinner for two. The tables are spaced so that the noise is diminished and table conversation is very easy. We were there on a Saturday evening and our server from Fairhill was just great; very attentive to every detail.
Crab cake way too salty and not quite warm enough. Squid was unseasoned and under cooked.
I was introduced to the BackBurner as part of a job interview back in 1998. I have been going back to this reliable restaurant ever since to celebrate special events in my families life. The food has always been great and they have have a great wine list and specials. Its a good place for "Foodies" like me.
Firstly ease of making reservations via Open Table always a plus. Overall experience was very good. Our waiter, Tristan, was attentive; steak special that night was a good value (generous portion and reasonable price); portion of Arctic Char sufficient enough to take half home. As always a pleasant dining atmosphere and experience.
This was our first visit and we came for my husband's birthday after a visit to Longwood Gardens. I appreciated them being open on a Monday (a lot of other places were closed). It was 1/2 price apps and $1 oysters on Monday, so we got the house special "better cheddar" and 6 oysters to start. The cheddar was interesting, grated cheese mixed with some smoke flavor, nuts and possibly mayo. The flatbread was a bit overly salted but a nice texture and we generally enjoyed it though I am not sure I would order it again. The oysters were from VA and were fresh - and a great price. We most appreciated that the entrees were available as half portions. I wish all restaurants did that. We had the crab cake and the lamb. The crab cake was mostly crab (not a lot of filler) but was also kind of flavorless. The tomato compote was very necessary to add flavor but there was too much vinegar (and I LOVE vinegar so this is saying something). The lamb was enjoyed.
We would have liked to order dessert but there weren't really any options that weren't heavily dairy based. It would have been nice if there was just a piece of cake or something. I am sure we could have gotten the brownie without the ice cream it didn't seem appealing to have half the dish.
I was very pleasantly surprised with the prices. With the 1/2 portions and the Monday specials we spend way less than expected. I would go again on a Monday if I was in the area but probably not for a special occasion.
Great experience...as always.
Food was good, but service was slow and inattentive. Slow to take our orders and food very slow to arrive even though it was not crowded at a late lunch time. Had to ask to have water refilled and get check.
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants for a special meal. Lately, I have left feeling a bit disappointed. Often, they don’t have the sparkling water I enjoy - and I am told that they “ran out yesterday.” The food and service used to be exceptional. Seems as though management or something has changed. No longer a favorite.
We've been to The Back Burner before but this visit was exceptional. It was a quiet Monday evening and we found they do half-price specials on wine bottles under $60 as well as a long list of appetizers at half price. The stuffed crab appetizers and cheese plate were wonderful. My lamb chops cooked in a Moroccan style were superb - among the best lamb ever. If you don't like too much salt, you might want to ask the chef to go easy on that for this dish though I loved it. Our bottle of Planet Oregon Pinot Noir was lovely, especially at a price that approximated retail! Service throughout was professional and friendly.
Delightful dinner with our daughter and son-in-law. The halibut special was superb and almost more that I could eat, but I ate it all. It was so good that we bypassed the Wednesday night surf&turf, but not the hot fudge brownie!
We had lunch and enjoyed the food. Service was mediocre as Tristan (our server) seemed disinterested and rushed (although restaurant was not busy). We have been here before and chefs do a nice job while service is typically lacking.
This is one of our favorite places to go for special occasions. The meal was good for the price. It was really cold even in the room with the fireplace.
