Back Burner Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We went for Valentine's Day. It was a very nice dinner out. We shared a shrimp cocktail. There were six large shrimp, but only a half a cup of cocktail sauce and no forks. The salad greens were fresh, but I would have liked more than just tomatoes and walnuts - some shredded carrots and sliced cucumbers, maybe. We had asked for the sides to be switched for my husband's meal, which they had told us could be done, but it wasn't. I had the halibut, which was good, but on the dry side. The place does have a lovely atmosphere and we will probably dine there again in the future.
My husband and I came for a birthday dinner. It was the weekend before Valentine’s Day, so possibly this could be the reason for the perfect storm of mishaps.
We started with a first course-I had the pumpkin mushroom soup, which, for some reason had a film on it like it had been waiting for a while. Other than the film, it was very good, I really enjoyed it. My husband ordered a wedge salad with ranch-it’s how he likes it. He was brought a salad without any dressing. We thought maybe it comes on the side and the server (not the waiter-how stupid is this?,-yet we see it everywhere) forgot. For whatever reason-the waiter doesn’t check to see if what is served is ok and we have to ask a busgirl. She goes to check on the dressing and comes back without any dressing and says there is no ranch (lol-and it gets worse). She asks if he wants a different dressing (uhh, yea-this slab of lettuce isn’t going down without some dressing)-he finally says a balsamic will be fine and she brings it. Now the waiter comes back and says there was ranch-he had gotten it. Ok, but it never made it out.Our plates are taken and we end up waiting a very long time for our entrees...so long in fact we were told twice they were almost ready. When they bring them-again a server- my husband’s filet had no Oscar....we’re looking under because we want to make sure they wouldn’t mess up his entree too. But.they.did. So,it’s taken back and re-plated with a smidge of the crab sauce he wanted. He cuts into the filet and it’s well done-nary any pink in it. The waiter comes and looks and knew it was not done properly-had he been the server maybe it wouldn’t have come out that way. Now...and I won’t even get any more picky-there were other issues. I will end on a positive note and tell you that management did come and listen to us and tried to rectify the situation which was expected.
I want to believe it was a comedy of errors...should we try again? I don’t know :(
Generally a good experience. Appetizers, drinks and crab cakes and flounder were excellent. Our waiter, Dino, was great. However, the sides were off. One of us had a potato gratin and the other had a spinach pastry. Both were greasy. It was extremely busy and we chalk those problems and greater noise than normal to that.
Went for a GNO dinner and we had a very enjoyable meal and a good time. It’s not a hipster bar; it’s a grown up restaurant. Mature clientele and atmosphere abound.
First of all, they have a good happy hour so look into that for good appetizers and cheaper drinks all week.
Bar is cozy with a good size bar, several tables and a nice room off the bar with seats and couches around a fireplace. Good, friendly table service and a atmosphere where we can talk and see the menu.
We had the Better Cheddar appetizer because you have to when you go there. It’s like crack. It was presented nicely with grapes and nice homemade crackers. So good and so addictive. We also had the calamari which was cooked correctly but I would have preferred a little more flavor in the sauce or coating.
Several of us had the NY Strip special which also had bacon and sour cream mashed potatoes and broccoli and kale. Very good. We all enjoyed it. Another friend had the halibut special and it was delicious. I tried it :). Fish was cooked perfectly. Crab cake and scallops were also on the menu. Crab cake was a good size, not a lot of filling and was enjoyed. Scallops were cooked perfectly and had a nice spicy seaweed salad.
I had the cheesecake which was homemade with raspberry sauce. It was good but nothing out of the ordinary. Chocolate torte and vanilla caramel salt gelato were also had and enjoyed.
We had a wonderful night. Everything was super yummy. The best part of our night, however, was Diana our server. We will be sure to request her whenever we dine there. She was so informative and attentive. She made our birthday dinner so enjoyable. Thank you so much.
The Back Burner is a solid restaurant. The food is very well prepared, but not real imaginative.
One warning when making a reservation - there. Are tables by the fireplace that seem cozy, but it’s very noisy back there. Regulars know to ask for a table in another area if they want to have a conversation.
Had a quiet and romantic date here. Great atmosphere and cozy space. It was hard to find because it is in a small craft market, but it was delightful once we got in there. Great oysters and the beet salad was scrumptious. Moderate pricing and great service.
The Back Burner is always a restaurant you can count on for a good meal in a nice setting. I was there recently with friends, however, the first person who arrived (we had a reservation) was shown to the table by the host pointing to the table where she could sit, no one walked her over to the table; that was tacky. I ordered a wedge salad that was drenched in salad dressing; my fault for not asking it to be on the side, but I truly hope that's not how they normally serve this salad. I've been here many times and will certainly be back, but I wonder if they are getting a little complacent with keeping it a special local spot. Also, I wish they would stay open later. The place is always cleared out by 8:30-9 pm.
We had a wonderful meal but our server was extremely ill equipped. We asked several questions about the menu and she didn't know the answer. For example they offered a Bistro Steak with crab and hollandaise. She had to go back to the kitchen to find out what cut of beef it was. We had a bottle of wine when we sat down then ordered a few glasses of wine with entrees. It took so long to get the wine that the entrees were almost consumed. food was very good. The Bistro steak special, a sirloin, was very good. The grilled romaine with Caesar dressing and a red pepper couli was outstanding!
The service was terrible. They had two large party’s going on and the kitchen neglected to fill the orders for the main dining area. After an hour wait for 3cold sandwiches I looked around and realized that no one in our immediate area had any food. No updates on what was happening.
The Back Burner consistently provides excellent food, excellent service, at good prices. The quality of the food is consistent - hot food is hot and cold food is cold! Our server, Tristan, was outstanding; courteous and efficient.
I always enjoy a dining experience at the Back Burner.
Nice evening though too many people for the room so we felt like we were in the way of not only service staff but customers as well. Very odd was the fact of running out of "service" plates under the desserts and too Very busy and few saucers. And we should have been informed of the need to ask for bread - hard to know in advance that bread is served only by request.- very busy but still friendly and capable waitress.
We tried Bavk Burner after a 5 year break due to recent remarks about the chef and great food. We're happy we did. Everything from the better cheddar app to the roasted butternut squash entree to the pumpkin cheesecake was delicious. Our server was very nice but would disappear for some time, especially considering the restaurant wasn't that crowded. We'll very happily return.
It was good to see the restaurant doing a brisk business on a Saturday night in Hockessin. Our main dishes were both very good. I had the deckle steak and scallops special, I thought it was the best thing I had there. They should put that on the regular menu. The other dish was short ribs and my husband loved it. That is on the regular menu. My shrimp lejon appetizer was a little dried out, maybe under the heat lamp in the kitchen too long. A very enjoyable meal overall in a favorite nearby restaurant.
