Had a quiet and romantic date here. Great atmosphere and cozy space. It was hard to find because it is in a small craft market, but it was delightful once we got in there. Great oysters and the beet salad was scrumptious. Moderate pricing and great service.

this is a top notch restaurant. i could have been happy with anything on the menu. loved the choices of plate sizes. the fact that it's been in hockessin for many years shows how many appreciate the thoughtful care taken in managing the restaurant.

The Back Burner is always a restaurant you can count on for a good meal in a nice setting. I was there recently with friends, however, the first person who arrived (we had a reservation) was shown to the table by the host pointing to the table where she could sit, no one walked her over to the table; that was tacky. I ordered a wedge salad that was drenched in salad dressing; my fault for not asking it to be on the side, but I truly hope that's not how they normally serve this salad. I've been here many times and will certainly be back, but I wonder if they are getting a little complacent with keeping it a special local spot. Also, I wish they would stay open later. The place is always cleared out by 8:30-9 pm.

Beet salad delicious. VERY long wait between apps and main course. Thought our waitress had left the premises. Fish dry as a result. Could have been great but for long delay in between courses.

We had a wonderful meal but our server was extremely ill equipped. We asked several questions about the menu and she didn't know the answer. For example they offered a Bistro Steak with crab and hollandaise. She had to go back to the kitchen to find out what cut of beef it was. We had a bottle of wine when we sat down then ordered a few glasses of wine with entrees. It took so long to get the wine that the entrees were almost consumed. food was very good. The Bistro steak special, a sirloin, was very good. The grilled romaine with Caesar dressing and a red pepper couli was outstanding!

The pumpkin mushroom soup was still good, the rest of the food was disappointing. Service was also not as good as before. Will not try again till they have better menu.

The service was terrible. They had two large party’s going on and the kitchen neglected to fill the orders for the main dining area. After an hour wait for 3cold sandwiches I looked around and realized that no one in our immediate area had any food. No updates on what was happening.

The Back Burner consistently provides excellent food, excellent service, at good prices. The quality of the food is consistent - hot food is hot and cold food is cold! Our server, Tristan, was outstanding; courteous and efficient.

I always enjoy a dining experience at the Back Burner.

It's a nice restaurant because you can get half portions. The wait staff is not in sync and often seem confused who is doing what. It is not a well orchestrated restaurant.
The bar noise travels into the restaurant.

We really enjoyed our first visit to Back Burner. The restaurant has a nice, quiet atmosphere and we had excellent service and meals. The filet was cooked perfectly and the salmon was exceptional. Perfect for date night.

3 of us ordered medium steak it was well, my kids ordered grilled chicken and they were given chicken tenders. I am upset that an 80th bday party celebration was marred by a sub par experience

Nice evening though too many people for the room so we felt like we were in the way of not only service staff but customers as well. Very odd was the fact of running out of "service" plates under the desserts and too Very busy and few saucers. And we should have been informed of the need to ask for bread - hard to know in advance that bread is served only by request.- very busy but still friendly and capable waitress.

We hadn’t been in a few years. Food was good, but a waiter was hard to come by. Waited at least 15 minutes for him to approach the table for a drink order. It didn’t get better from there...

Tuesday Burger Night at the Back burner is always a treat, with great food at great value. Service was excellent and the server was knowledgeable. Great food and drink in anunpretentious setting.

We tried Bavk Burner after a 5 year break due to recent remarks about the chef and great food. We're happy we did. Everything from the better cheddar app to the roasted butternut squash entree to the pumpkin cheesecake was delicious. Our server was very nice but would disappear for some time, especially considering the restaurant wasn't that crowded. We'll very happily return.

It was good to see the restaurant doing a brisk business on a Saturday night in Hockessin. Our main dishes were both very good. I had the deckle steak and scallops special, I thought it was the best thing I had there. They should put that on the regular menu. The other dish was short ribs and my husband loved it. That is on the regular menu. My shrimp lejon appetizer was a little dried out, maybe under the heat lamp in the kitchen too long. A very enjoyable meal overall in a favorite nearby restaurant.

Food and Service were good however we were rushed which was probably due to table turnover on a Saturday night. We were served and billed within 45 minutes for a fine dining experience.

Amazing....this was our first time. Was told about this place from a friend. She told me to try the better cheddar. We did and now all I can do is dream about it! Everything was so delicious. We can’t wait to go back again. The chairs were a little uncomfortable, but a small price to pay. Service was great as well. A++++!

I had the Stuffed Mushrooms for an appetizer, and the Filet en croute for my meal. The mushrooms were excellent with a generous filling. The 8 oz filet was actually 2 four oz filets which were tender, and were cooked perfectly. The staff was friendly, and service was great.

We went as part of the ‘customer appreciation’ special which was on all week according to the email we got. The prix fixe 3 course meal was excellent but it seemed like they were overwhelmed or something because the service was uncharacteristically sub-par.

Food good: pumpkin soup, stuffed mushrooms, wedge salad. Small portion filet is a great value and is always well done. Our fellow diners ordered the scallops, which were good, but they were not thrilled with the set which was a sticky purple rice and pickled radishes. Bread pudding for dessert was also good. Our server was pleasant enough, but disappeared for a while and dessert took a very long time to reach our table. We've been here several times before, however, and will return.

We had the fried calamari and Gouda cheese plate both were very good! The short ribs were tender salmon was a huge cut. Seared scallops were done just right. Picky eater number two ordered shrimp and grits and pronounced them as good as any in the south. Bread was wonderful and hot!

Food was great as always. Cant beat pumpkin mushroom soup or better cheddar. Two of us has surf and turf special. Portions looked slightly smaller than what I remember, but still very good and ok for most appetites. All around, a great local gem.

My husband and I were in the area to go to Longwood Gardens and Winterthur for an anniversary weekend trip. Another local restaurant in the same area had been recommended and when looking at that restaurant on Google and OpenTable, I discovered the Back Burner Restaurant. We decided to take a chance given the reviews and the menu.

While tucked away and not appearing to be 'all that' we found this to be a real 'find.' Our waitress was incredibly helpful and friendly, even telling me not to order a dish I was interested in because it had gotten back reviews from other diners and they were going to be taking it off the menu. I SO appreciated this.

And then everything I had, from the special cocktail to the dessert, was phenomenal. I had the filet and it was cooked to perfection. The bread pudding was fabulous.

I would definitely return to this restaurant if I were to be in the area again and I definitely recommend giving it a try.
