I forgot what a gem this place is! We usually hit the Greenville hotspots, as they’re closer. But we were reminded last night why this should be our go to place!
Back burner was one of my favorite restaurants, and I gave 3 stars overall bc of previous experience. Our last visit was very disappointing and was not the quality we had been used to at the establishment. Service was good, but the food was not. We started with the stuffed mushrooms, that were fair, very liquidy and too much cartilage. I then had the Cobb salad and my husband had the Short ribs. His dish was fine, nothing stood out, but my salad was not. I did not care for the dressing which was thankfully on the side per my request. I had to send back the first attempt as it was all over the salad. The description stated a medium rare blackened sirloin. It came out medium to medium well and there was hardly any seasoning on it. The shrimp were rubber. We then had the bread pudding, which was cold in the middle. I understand restaurants are struggling with staff right now, but they should at least put out good tasting food. The room itself was very bright, like a cafeteria, also not what we experienced in the past. Our drinks were delicious and the best part. I really hope this was a fluke and not the norm.
Average food not cheap
this is definitely a hidden gem.. once I discovered it added to my list of favorite places for a nice happy hr and apps or delicious dinner. they also have a "to go" shop, where you can order to go dishes, drinks, cheeses, crackers and lots of goodies!
Dinner was very good. Only small issue was that the crackers we were served were burnt.
Wonderful as always!
Server overly attentive. Many empty tables but seemed to be rushing us through meal.
We were a little disappointed with the menu changes since our last visit. Nothing special, food was good, not great.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Back Burner. The food was delicious (as usual) and our server was attentive and pleasant.
Wonderful crab cake sandwich. Highly recommend. But I do miss their chicken salad.
It has been about 4 years since we dined at The Back Burner. .After last night's experience, if we return once within the next 10 years, it will be one time too many!!. . With that last statement, you can deduce that our dining experience was an absolute disaster!!. .There were three parties of 4 (including us) in the restaurant. .The seating capacity is approximately 50, plus additional accommodations at the bar. . .Our waitress was an absolute delight. .The poor thing was partially a victim of an inept kitchen and her own inexperience in dealing with an impossible situation. .The "Manager" had the skills of a hammer thrusting itself onto a stone, resulting in nothing but broken pieces all over the place. .She possesses the subtlety of a car crashing into a house!!. . .After waiting too long for our drinks to arrive, we placed orders for 3 appetizers and 4 main courses. . .Approximately 30 minutes later, after we hailed down another employee and asked him to find our waitress, she reappeared, for the first time since taking our orders, apologizing profusely for the delay, blaming "The Kitchen". .The appetizers were (1) Beet Salad, (2) Caesar Salad, (3) Crab Stuffed Mushrooms. .After another 10 minutes, our appetizers arrived - 40 MINUTES from the time we ordered them!!. .As we were consuming our appetizers, two waiters show up with our main courses!!. .Talk about poor timing!!. .The main courses were (1) A Vegetarian eggplant Dish (2) Lemon Butter Shrimp and Pasta, (3) Steamed Clams, (4) Steak Frites. .Rather than risking returning them to the kitchen and never seeing them for the rest of our lives, we told them to put them on the table. .The appetizers were very good, as were the main courses, except for Lemon Butter Shrimp. .The shrimp were as hard as rocks. .They tasted as though they had been prepared long before we ordered them, and then re-cooked for us. .If you attempt to dine here, CAVEAT EMPTOR. . DINER BEWARE!!!. BEST OF LUCK!!
Pleasant dinner for us. Glad to be out any enjoyed the menu at the Back Burner. I had a tough time choosing my dinner, but the Lamb sirloin won . Nicely done, w good jus, not enough beans, a bit too many potatoes. The beet salad was delicious. My husband loved his shrimp pasta dinner. Wine list quite good. We only had a glass, not a bottle. We are going back for their crab cakes! The desserts looked good as they went by, but we were full.
The Back Burner was the perfect place for a Mother's Day lunch. The food options were really good. I had the garden salad and the quiche entree. Both were delicious. The service was very good. I had a very enjoyable lunch with my Mother and sister.
Blackened salmon salad was very good, with black beans and lime crema. Fries here are usually great, but they came out barely warm and had to be sent back. I'm disappointed in the complementary flatbread. I used to look forward to it, but lately it is badly burned or tasteless with no seeds. It's free, but why bother!
Very nice dining experience. First time there. Always stopped in the store to purchase the Better Cheddar, but never dined. Will be back again. The food and service were great. Pumpkin mushroom soup and desserts were delicious!
We were celebrating a close friend’s new job. The food, atmosphere, and service was outstanding. Great value. Will definitely go back.
We very much enjoyed our dinner
Waiter wasn’t able to answer ?’s but he did go back to get answers. Biggest complaint: there was no one there to say thank you for coming and have a good night.
Great Tuesday special Hamburger nite.
Very safe distancing between tables and customers.
Able to sit outside. Service and food excellent. Look forward to my next visit.
Everything was delicious, as always!
Nice cozy table near the bar as requested. Our first time here and probably our last. Food was disappointing. Flat bread was stale, the foie gras was overdone, and the short ribs were dry and overdone. At least the beets and goat was good as was the crab cake. Service was not that good as our waitress/bartender had just gotten the Moderna vaccine and was not feeling well. The bus boy was in a big hurry to clear our plates as soon as one was emptied whether or not both of us were finished with our meals. We will probably not go back.
Good food with a good menu selection. Service was great.
Visited for lunch. Food was excellent, as was everything else. Very highly recommend. Not my first time there. Consistently great.
Great food and great ambience. The service was a little slow due to them being short staffed during Covid, but our server was excellent when she was present. Highly recommended.
I had the special, Rock fish. Had a side of asparagus with it. I think the price was a little high for what I received($29.00). But it was very good, maybe a little over cooked.
My spouse got the filet with sides. He said it was good.
The waiter was ok. We never got our bread, which he said he would bring, but that was ok, because we didn’t really need it ! Not overly attentive. Took awhile for our check.
Will go back at some point.
Great service and food. Nice ambiance as well. Burger specials tonight so I ordered one. It was cooked perfectly with nice flavor. I like that they offered lettuce wrap in place of the bun. We also got the cheddar spread to share, which was really tasty. Will definitely be back.
This was a Birthday celebration. We had a great time was never rushed. Drinks to desserts were very tasty. The pumpkin mushroom soup was delicious.
Food was delish! Drinks perfect! Nice quiet and romantic. Hope more people go! Great neighborhood spot.
Great little restaurant off the beaten path - hidden treasure
Was a great place for date night!
The food and service was excellent. They have a great atmosphere and they were very conscious of COVID requirements. Highly recommend.
Great place for an evening out. Good food, good service and nice location close to home. The chef creates some amazing specials.
Our first visit back for lunch at our favorite Hockessin area restaurant since the pandemic shut-down did not disappoint. It was up to its pre-covid high standards. Service was gracious and the crab cake entree still outstanding.
I’ve been to this restaurant a number of times. It’s always a hit and during covid, it was quiet and really enjoyable. The service was outstanding and everything in the menu is a must try!
Food was really good. Got the better cheddar app. Other diner got shrimp app, which had thought was a bit overcooked. Filet very good. Crab cake ok.
Service was ok. Our server was very nice, but I didn’t like hearing staff discuss who is taking our table, etc. Talk about that out if earshot! I also spilled water and once I found someone to tell, they handed me some napkins — that was it. No assistance, and then they left all the wet materials to sit there on the table. Did not appreciate that, so not a ton of attention paid.
I’m sure we’ll return, knowing better what to expect in the future.
It was pretty good and steak was cooked nicely! Was disappointed they were out of the dessert we wanted when they only had 4 on the menu to choose from, also we ordered something to take home and half the items listed with the appetizer were missing from the package when we got home.
Love Burger Night! Excellent Beer Selection! Good Fun!
Recommend it highly.
Nice moderately priced wine list. Several craft beer choices.
The crab cake entree was very good and priced fairly. The Mahi Mahi w/lobster risotto was also very good. Portions were average in size.
Would definitely return.
Extremely pleasant experience. Our server, Julie, is very professional and friendly. We spoke with the manager to compliment all of the wait staff. Food is top shelf. Lamb and salmon entrées are remarkable. Wine list is commendable. Keep up the great work.
