If you live in the Kennett Square/Chadds Ford/Hockessin/Wilmington area and are looking for a nice restaurant with excellent food, great service, a quiet ambience and great value- go to The Back Burner. I give it "5-STARS".
Nice place. Food was below mediocre for the price. Ok for sandwiches burgers etc.
Food was just ok, in some cases it was overcooked and not hot. Short rib was fork tender but I left the risotto untouched because it was hard, warm and tasted odd. The pumpkin mushroom soup was amazing. Would highly recommend that. Ice cream had film on it from freezer. Service was excellent. Overall, other than maybe takeout for the soup, we will not return.
Lunch at Back Burner on New Year's Eve was fine but not outstanding.
The famous pumpkin mushroom bisque was quite good. My companions reported that the crab bisque did not have a lot of flavor and that the typical sherry float was lacking. The Cobb salad and shrimp scampi were both good. Unfortunately, the daily crab quiche only had a miniscule amount of crab and was really low on flavor (i.e., just egg) and quite thin.
The real problem was with our server who seemed to be inexperienced. Although he was pleasant, his table assignments were spread over quite a distance, and he disappeared for broad stretches of time. We finally resorted to flagging down other servers to keep lunch flowing. The lukewarm coffee we were served was cold by the time we received cream.
I would return to Back Burner, but I wouldn't rush, based on our lunch experience.
At this time, We went for the Tuesday hamburger special and it was great as usual.
My absolute favorite restaurant, always fantastic food, service & ambiance. Total fantastic place to enjoy wonderful food!!!
Always a pleasure dining at the Back Burner. The burgers are great and you can’t beat burger night.
For a quiet, delicious, and safe dining experience, you can’t go wrong with the wonderful Back Burner!
the ONE thing that did not settle well with me: one or two of the waitstaff removing our plates too soon. if someone at the table is still eating, i think this is a pushy unfriendly thing to do - it makes the one still eating feel rushed. i think it has to do with manners. other than that - no problems. but it is rather disappointing that i high class restaurant like this does something so intrusive.
I ordered a small filet which was served on an appetizer dish and consisted of three separate pieces of meat which were similar in size to chicken nuggets. Overall, the food wasn’t good in my opinion and the cooked food wasn’t warm or hot enough when brought to the table. I’ve been to BB several times over the years and the quality of service and food has typically been very good. Not this time. Very disappointing.
This was our first visit and we look forward to our next visit. Great cocktails and the Philly Cheesesteak egg rolls were delish! My steak was very good and my husbands filet and shrimp were equally as good.
Great place to go to dinner
Atmosphere is beautiful. Food is always wonderful.
We always enjoy dining at The Back Burner. I typically order the Reuben for lunch, which is excellent (5-STARS). My wife has enjoyed the Protein Bowl and the Roasted Squash dishes- but unfortunately both of them are no longer on the menu. This time we ordered the Quiche. It was good, but a tad smaller in "height" than we're used to having (it was fairly "short"- not filled very high with cheese, veggies, etc). I think I'd order the Reuben again over the Quiche. The Pumpkin soup is always excellent! We're interested in trying dinner there sometime...
Very enjoyable experience. Service was quick and fiendly and food was tasty.
Good burger ($8 burger night). Ordered a side of fries, they were limp & greasy. A tad disappointed
The crab cakes were the best I ever had in Delaware!!! Comfortable environment and pleasant wait staff. I'll definitely be back for my cheese ball next week!!!
Upon Being Seated

Exceptional Throughout Entire Meal
Waited 15 minutes after being seated for a server to show up at our table. Ignored the entire time. Left the restaurent.
Food was very good and the service was excellent. Janet was our server and she was attentive without being intrusive - friendly and efficient. We sat in the bar area which is a bit more comfy than the dining room.
Best dinner I’ve had in years. Every bite was fresh, perfectly cooked.
Food was out of sight!!!Original, creative and delicious and beautifully presented. Probably short on wait staff. Appeared a bit overwhelmed.
Another great meal at the Back Burner! The food and service is always consistently good!
Our waitress Allie was outstanding! She was an absolute delight!
Very nice place for lunch with friends. Food is consistently good.
We enjoyed our dinners of steaks and salmon very much and they were perfectly cooked. Our waiter was very attentive and efficient. Will come back soon.
Very nice setting. Service was good and food was too. Prices are also reasonable.
Lunch at the Back Burner was fantastic. Service was great, food was delicious and prices for lunch at a tablecloth restaurant were quite reasonable. Would definitely recommend, and I'll be back!
The Back Burner in Hockessin, Delaware is a delightful place off the beaten tracks just outside of our town Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. The food is always very good; menu with many options. Service is very good, atmosphere very pleasant, low key and comfortable. We highly recommend it!
Wonderful service and food! Thank you!
It had been five years since we had dinner at the back burner. The restaurant has nice look to it, a very casual and comfortable place. Our waitress was excellent. The menu is not extensive, and I am not a fish eater, But I didn’t joy the petite fillet added to my salad. The pumpkin mushroom soup would please people who love a lot of mushrooms because it was full of mushrooms of all kinds.
My seat was in a dark area. I couldn’t read the menu. Needs more lighting.
All an all perfect!
Food was delicious as usual and our waiter was very attentive. One of our favorite spots!!
A delicious delicate quiche with excellent potatoes and a very nice rose’. I’ll be going back!
My wife and I visited The Back Burner for the very first time on Wednesday November 10, 2021. We were very pleasantly surprised: the food is very good- excellent, service very good, prices reasonable and ambience very low key, nice soft music, wonderful. We LOVE The Back Burner!! It is now one of our favorite restaurants. We'll be coming back soon...
We’ve eaten at The Back Burner many times and are always impressed with the quality of the food. Unfortunately, this was the first time we both noticed that the server was not doing a great job; she even shared with us that she is trying to get out of the restaurant business. She did an okay job, just the bare minimum, and this restaurant is one that requires more than the bare minimum. We will be back, of course. I’m sure our server will be moving on to other things soon, but The Back Burner is going to be here for a long time. It’s great, and I can highly recommend it.
The food was very good. The Bedder-Chedder is excellent. The fact that everyone has a "staff shortage" was evident - but the waitstaff did their best.
Food good, service spotty. No bartender, waitress had to make our drinks.
Food was delicious but the service was sub standard. I know its hard to find help but these folks had obviously had little to know training of proper service. So disappointing since the food was so good but i wanted to get up and start bussing tables , or telling the staff what to do.
