Hadn’t been there in awhile and have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
Met with friends that I haven't seen in awhile. Great place because of reasonable prices, good food, and being quiet. Been going here for many years.
Service was slow and our order came out wrong so it had to be changed in a rush
Good food and service.
an old favorite is now just tired
short rib was awful, shrimp and grits ok but uninspired
pumpkin mushroom soup is always good, but never served really hot
Enjoyed a lady’s lunch during Restaurant Week. Recommend asking for a booth...nice high sides, so very private and good for long conversations. Nice service, even though they were pretty busy.
The food was very good. Really enjoyed the pumpkin risotto and salmon. The warm brownie with hot fudge sauce was outstanding! Our waiter however was not very knowledgeable about the menu.
We have been several times and I cannot tell you how disappointed my husband and I were this week. Went to take advantage of restaurant week. Sat at the table for 15 minutes before I had to get up and ask the hostess what was going on because no one had come to our table. She apologized profusely that no one had been assigned to our table and a friendly server came over right away and also apologized. Where they dropped the ball was that our server told us the manager, Brian, would be over. Not only did he never come over, nothing was ever addressed on our bill for the mistake. No excuse for this. It also took two hours for us to get all three courses on a Wednesday night. If they were short staffed, the manager should have made it a priority to come speak to us. Not only were we not a priority, he never came over at all, even after our server told us he would. If it wasn't for the good food and friendly server, I doubt we would ever go back. I hope the owners address this with Brian.
Not a good experience this time! Service was extremely poor which made the luncheon disappointing! Hopefully IF we return they do better....
My husband and I loved it. We had a pleasant experience and we were very delighted at the taste of the food. Although we didn't get the salad we ordered, the one that came was delicious. The server made it up to us as well. The dessert, ice cream topped warm brownie, was to die for. There were some interesting summer drinks to try.
Top-notch food, service and atmosphere. My 94 year old mother enjoyed oysters and crabcakes, while I had the pumpkin mushroom soup and a filet. We both topped it off with cheesecake. Halfway through meal, my mom said “We’re coming back here!” Tristan was our waiter, and he provided good, friendly service without interrupting the conversation. Already wondering what we’ll be trying on our next visit, and we’re spreading the word on Back Burner to our friends.
We have determined that The Back Burner fits us perfectly, close to home, good food, good drinks and an excellent staff.
Outstanding lobster dinner on Thursday evenings. The potato serving could have been a bit heartier. 4-6 very small fries? Throw a handful on the plate! Lobster was cooked perfectly and was nice and meaty. Bread was yummy.
Very good menu. Monday is half price appetizers. They have 3 items that are half portions and they are perfect size for normal eaters, e.g. , a four oz filet.
We are never disappointed with the food at the BB. Each time we have eaten there the food was delicious.
Food was excellent, as usual. The restaurant was full, but not noisy You could have a conversation without shouting. Portions were more than adequate, but not overpowering. I especially like their wedge salad( I have had it before). The lettuce was crispy and cold and the blue cheese dressing was excellent. I have never been disappointed at the Backburner.
The food as excellent and so was Janet, our server! We will be back!
Great service and meal
Ordered rack of lambs, medium rare. They came well done. Service staff never checked to see how things were.
Salad was outstanding.
Dessert was good but took 30 minutes from time of order till served.
While still eating main course, plates were being removed from the table. Not appropriate in an upscale restaurant. Should wait for all to finish main course before removing plates.
Was not the best dining experience.
Disappointed when greeted by hostess who pointed out 2 of our party of 4 were 'children' (no one asked their ages when we made our reservation online). Yes, our children dine with us, and yes, at venues other than McDs. So we were 'begrudgingly' seated by the hostess. Our server was pleasant but didn't stop by often enough. My husbands 'medium' filet was totally well done, but he opted to eat it anyway. My 'medium rare' filet was barely pink. My family was totally done eating by time my steak was taken back and subsequently returned - and that wasn't even checked on promptly. The server did comp my dessert only, but a manager didn't even stop by to apologize. Probably not a do-over as my youngest won't be an adult for 10 more years....
As always, the Pumkin Mushroom soup was worth the trip.
Great cocktails (manhattan and martini). My husband had shrimp & grits and found the grits a bit underdone. The "andouille sauce" had slices of andouille sausage in it but was otherwise not particularly flavorful. I had the chilled gulf shrimp entree salad which arrived without bacon or hard-boiled egg and without any dressing at all. It was supposed to have a red wine/bacon vinaigrette. The window girl (correct term?) who delivered it assured me it had dressing but then brought me a little cup of thoroughly "meh" dressing. The waitress was pleasant and cheerful, and the setting was pleasant.
Everything was beyond delicious. Our waitress was absolutely delightful and really paid attention to us. We had a birthday in the group and she brought out dessert with a candle. Really great experience and will definitely return!
The restaurant runs specials Monday through Thursday. The value is excellent and the food is very good. Surf and Turf on Wednesdays comes with either crab cake, shrimp scampi and lobster tail. Any are great choices!
Slow service my belief was limited staff. There appeared to be more bus employees and reservation greeters vs servers.
As always, the food was great and the surroundings comfortable and private. I have been here many times and there is always something different to try. There is an excellent wine list and a well-appointed bar for casual dining. Don’t let the shopping center venue fool you, everything is first class, including the desserts.
It was so nice to return to the restaurant after just a week ago. I know this sounds strange, we were there last week on a Friday Night. It was at that time we haven’t been there after 12 years. Our real estate sales person took us there for lunch, o.b.t.y we had not decided on which house we were going to purchase. We took our neighbor hood friend there for a retirement lunch.
The food and atmosphere are still as good as usual, but we found the service a little slower than usual this visit. There was a good crowd, but the restaurant wasn't totally full on a Saturday evening. My friend that we were with said that she had also experienced slow service on another recent visit. On a cold rainy summer night still love the pumpkin mushroom soup.
Great lunch menu. Had the Filets, very flavorful and tender. Stuffed mushrooms for starters were excellent. Service was very good even though they seemed very busy for lunch.
Wow, it’s been over 12 years since had lunch at the Back Burner, our real estate broker took us there when we were out looking to purchase a new home. Just out of the blue, we found it again a couple of weeks ago and decided we would give it a try, this time for dinner. We were impressed once again. Our waiter Tristan was great. He delivered each of our courses perfectly.
Good food and service had always. Thanks
The lobsters were amazing!
The manager Brian was exceptionally accommodating to our groups needs… Tina and Tristan are servers were attentive to our every mean… The meal was delicious the room is unbelievable he very authentic colonial… I would go back here in a heartbeat… I loved the bar area and the very very cozy romantic side room off of the bar thank you for a lovely lovely evening absolute delicious food
Nice meal overall. Really great crab cakes. Salmon prepared to our liking. I usually don’t order shellfish “specials” but I did and was very pleased with the freshness of the dish and care in preparation. Lobster was cooked perfectly in a light cream sauce with the right amount of perfectly cooked pasta.
Great restaurant. Food was good. Slightly noisy. I will go again but only for big occasions.
The back burner never disappoints. The food is always cooked to perfection and the staff is always great!
We were not impressed with the service and the quality of food. It was ok, but my veggie burger looked tired and unappealing when it appeared. The service was also ok, but it felt like a hurried diner instead of a staff that provides a pleasant, relaxing meal. We considered our experience as acceptable and average, no serious complaints, just a little disappointing.
Our ground 9 enjoyed our monthly social dining experience at The Back Burner this week. We were greeted as we entered the restaurant and immediately seated at our reserved table. Atmosphere was welcoming and a bit upscale. Our waiter, Tristan, was friendly, professional, helpful, and efficient. He was attentive without being hovering. Thank you, Tristan, for your excellent service. Our food was nicely presented and had excellent flavor. We highly recommend this restaurant.
The Back Burner has been a solid standby in Hockessin for years now, and I nearly always enjoy my dinners there. This time was definitely very good -- everyone enjoyed their food, and they managed to find a glass of dry sack for my dad! (The waiter could have had more knowledge of the bar's offerings, though, or a more graceful way of handling unknown requests.) Still don't have great vegetarian options, but since my wife and I are pescetarians, and the fish was quite good, that wasn't a big problem (and my wife, the obligate vegetarian/pescetarian, wasn't with us this trip, alas).
It was a great choice for an early Father's Day dinner, though it was noisier than I remembered -- one reason we ended up there rather than Buckley's, the family's other idea, was because we thought it would be quieter. Still, the octogenarians did all right with conversation despite the ambient noise.
I had a great experience. Our server was very friendly and knew everything about the menu and the ingredients. I was very impressed with her. The choice of food was good but it was not seasoned well. The Baba Ganouj had no salt or any other seasoning. The criissant and chicken salad was very, very dry. I did not know what to make of it. But all in all I enjoyed the room, the clean linens, the cleanliness in general. Just taste the food before you serve it.
