About Bacaro

Rustic Venetian tavern for sharing cichetti, Venetian-style small plates paired with Northern Italian wines. Covertly located down a little winding street a block south of Canal. An inside and outside staircase both lead you to an underground catacomb of exposed brick archways with wooden communal farm tables, illuminated by soft lighting and warm candles reminiscent of the streets of Italy.

Bacaro as become our go-to eatery. We love the ambience and the food and picked it, this time, for a special occasion - a birthday. It was much appreciated.
Love the food choices and the wine list, brick walls, unusual layout.
We travel a fairly long way to get to Bacaro and it is always worth it.

Ask to seat us at 8:45pm for our 9 pm party but one person was missing from our party so they would not seat us. When our 4 th showed up at 9 pm they did not have a table for us and waited for 35 minuets to get seated.

Restaurant was very kind to accommodate changes to my reservation time, and the food was very good. But we found the service indifferent to cold. Waiter came over once and we ordered a bunch of small dishes and asked they be paced out. Almost everything arrived at once (there was literally no room on the table) bussers cleared our plates and we never saw that waiter again until he brought dessert menus. Does look like a lovely space for large parties. We just had an off experience.

Its a cool cavernous space and I spotted Chloe Sevigny there which added to the people watching pleasure.

Bacaro is amazing!!! Great food tucked away in nowhere with refined service and low key excellence. Please don't spread the word...

Overrated. The food nor the service warrant the hype. Very average Italian however the cellar environment is plus.

Come here for the pasta but not the loud dinner crowds. Acoustics in the downstairs seating area are very poor. Our waitstaff needed to repeat something 4 times for several trips to our table due to the noise level.

Do not order the fried vegetables and shrimp - very average in flavor and was not worth the $17. I had the whole wheat pasta with duck ragu and the portion was a little small for the price tag, but it slightly made up for the noise and bland appetizer.

Dine before the 7PM dinner rush or request to sit in the semi-private lower floor dining area.

We recently ate at Bacaro when visiting New York City with friends for the weekend. We were staying in China Town and it was great to find this place tucked away within walking distance of our hotel. We had a wonderful leisurely meal with delicious food and wine. The service was excellent.

Bacaro is well worth venturing into Chinatown. The food is absolutely delicious - highly recommend the crab salad, duck ragu and lambrusco.

Rustic NY restaurants are my favorite - Bacaro takes "rustic" to a level beyond rustic (in a bad way) - more like old, unimaginative, and cramped with a feeling of being in my neighbor's basement. Love the sister restaurant, Peasant. Actually had to leave Bacaro after the appetizer to go to Peasant.
Service at Bacaro was slow and overly casual. Our appetizer of mozzarella and tomatoes was excellent, cocktails severed very slowly and at different times were only OK. Will not go back, but if the area will certainly go back to Peasant. Hard to believe these restaurants are associated.

I was in the area and OpenTable lead me here through solid ratings. Thank you OpenTable!

A small but lively upstairs bar with stairs that lead you into the catacombs of private, candlelit dining downstairs. Bacaro seems unchanged in decor, but with all the modern services and charm expected to compete with NYC's elite. Highly recommend the Spaghetti Nero and Broccoli Rabe. The staff is friendly, patient, and the absolute opposite of pushy, making this neighborhood gem great for any kind of occasion. Highly recommend.

It was a busy evening when we went because of a party in the main room. We weren't able to sit down for 50 minutes after our scheduled reservation because some guests before us decided to loiter after the check came, but the restaurant's staff were apologetic and provided us with free prosecco and dessert. The food was so great it made up for the wait!

This restaurant is on an interesting block on the edge of China Town.
Its a very interesting space, especially the downstairs dining room.
The menu is very interesting with many good food choices as well as wine choices.
Everything we ordered was very well done. The only complaint I have is that the portions are too small, although the pricing is reasonable. So I would recommend an appetizer, a pasta, and then a main course unless you are a light eater.

Food and drinks here are fine. Sometimes they can be really good. Service varies--it can be leisurely. I come mostly bc it's pretty easy to get in, there's parking in front, and the fare is reasonable. The chairs (most of them) are God-awful, though: spine-contorting and ill-suited to the human body. They need to go.

Great ambience and service -- and a terrific wine list. Steak a little gristly. Salads and other dishes quite good. Fun place. Not too loud. Ask to sit downstairs.

I booked a reservation at Bacaro for the Saturday after Valentine's Day (as our celebration) after seeing the reviews online and their website. I was highly disappointed when I arrived at the restaurant to see very few people there. The place next door was packed and I actually confused it for Bacaro as I walked by. Once we were seated, and reviewed the menu, we ordered some appetizers. They came out cold...the soup was cold and salty, the fried rice balls were cold to the point where the cheese wasn't even melted, and the bread they gave us was harder than the bricks on the wall. Next came our main course. My girlfriend ordered the clams with pasta. The dish came out cold, was salty (see the trend here), and half the clam shells had no clams. I ordered the Chicken Milanese. My chicken cutlet was burnt to a crisp. The salad was sour. This place was just not good at all. Very disappointed.
