Izakaya

Azasu is a casual neighborhood izakaya located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

We serve Japanese comfort food and bar snacks – the sort of food best eaten with a drink in one hand and chopsticks in the other. Family-style pork gyoza, crispy fried chicken karaage, comforting Japanese curries, rice, and noodles come to the table alongside icy mugs of Japanese beer and frozen yuzu cocktails.

Our food loves booze, so the drink menu overflows with Japanese whiskies, frozen shochu drinks, and Japanese Hoppy (a popular non-alcoholic beer spiked with shochu). Our hand-picked list of almost 20 types of cup sake (individual glass jars of sake with metal pop-can tops) is the only one of its kind in NYC.

Azasu is a place where you can stop by for quick beer and a plate of gyoza after work or linger late over shared plates and a round of cocktails (or four) with friends. See you soon.

Also, it is very healthy with lots of veggies in the pot. However, I don't think the portion is that large. It was not enough when we ordered 2-people pot for 2 people.

The menu is eclectic but extremely manageable We have been there 3 times and we have not encountered a bad dish. The highlight is the Chunkonabe, which is a stew Sumo wrestlers eat to bulk up before a match. We normally order two servings of the stew and about 4 other dishes, which comfortably feeds 4 adults. Other dishes we have tried are the seared mackerel, sake clams, takoyaki, various skewers, yakisoba, and karaage. There is a large assortment of cup sakes (with pull back tabs) that are very popular in Japan.

We waited for about fifteen minutes before a water glass was brought for one guest and about the same time for water refill. No one acknowledged us unless we flagged them. The waitstaff do not scan the room when walking through it. Food was mediocre, about the quality usually for catering to college students but the price point a bit above that. Overall, one gets the feeling that this is a place for "kids" who don't expect too much in way of food or service.

This is one of my favorite Japanese places in NYC when I miss some authentic flavors of my home country. Azasu is a little sister of Yopparai, which is an upscale izakaya with Michelin recognition. Azasu brings low-key, super casual, and fun downtown Tokyo vibes. And the food is seriously good. Most tapas dishes are the staple comfort food and street food, but the quality is above most others in NYC. Their specialty is "nabe" which is Japanese hot pot customarily eaten in sumo houses. Sumo is their theme, and you can see the sumo matches on the TV. I love their miso chanko nabe - the miso has so much umami and flavors. It is big, so share it with 3-4 ppl in addition to some tapas dishes, like fried chicken (yum!), mackerel, kushi, etc. They have many "cup sake" besides izakaya staple of "chu hai." It is a fun place to share food w/ friends, and the staff is super friendly.

In 2015, their management took an overhaul of this place and totally revamped it by bringing a new experienced chef from Japan, new staff, and new menu. Now their features are "Nabe" (hot pot) with Sumo matches on the screen (Sumo wrestlers are associated with Nabe in Japan). Although, to some people, the menu might look similar to the old one with many Japanese comfort food, the food is completely on another level. Azasu is owned by the same people of Yopparai, which is an upscale sake bar around the corner with a fabulous culinary standard. But Azasu's dishes are more casual, downtown izakaya-type food (and a lot less expensive). Aburi shime saba is lightly broiled at the table, fried chicken was super juicy, and chanko nabe (miso) was awesome. The staff is super friendly and does a lot for you at the table, so you're well taken care of. When you think you're done with nabe, they'll make 'zosui' (Japanese porridge) for you to really finish. Dishes are on the larger side, so they're good for groups. It should be a group of 3 or more to share and enjoy variety of dishes. The sake cup selection is great. They also have some sake by the glass and 'chu-hai' (mixed drink with shochu). It's a fun vibe, but the food is even better.
