A very small menu but everything on it is well done
Service was unimpressive. Server was very abrupt and acted ‘put out’ when questions about menu were asked.
We were in town for just two nights, and in Birmingham apparently everywhere worth eating is closed Sundays and Mondays -- which is how we ended up at Avo. The food was wonderful -- Soft Shell Crab, Crab Cakes, Kale-Quinoa Salad, Tempura Green Beans. The service was poor! After cocktails we waited 20 minutes for starters. Finally a server (not ours) brought the two crab dishes. We wondered where the starters were? She said she'd check. Our waiter finally returned, didn't even acknowledge the screwup. I asked for fresh pepper on my salad (not a huge lift), and it was 20 minutes before he returned: "Sorry, Boss -- 30 people just walked in." Well, that a good excuse if I wanted to talk to the manager or hostess, but it's not my problem when I'm waiting for our waiter to serve our table!
The restaurant seems to be falling in to disrepair as the seats at tables are looking very shabby, and my wife killed two bugs on the floor.
Albeit a brunch, the standards of this one great establishment seem to have significantly slipped since our last visit a few months ago.
Service was very slow. Had reservations but had to wait. Server appeared to be very inexperienced. We have been to Avo many times and always enjoyed our experience. However, service has been subpar the last 2or 3 times.
Service was very slow. Paper napkins and dirty dishes. Very bad experience.
Keeps getting worse and worse. Spend your money elsewhere
Mother’s day brunch was very nice at Avo!
This was a disappointing place for Mother's Day brunch. We had a reservation, and there were lots of tables inside, but they put us outside--first in the direct sun and then in the shade but right next to the street, next to a truck running its engine and then firetrucks blaring by. They seemed poorly managed. We had to ask for basics like silverware, napkins, salt and pepper, and jam for our tiny biscuits. One positive: The grits were good.
We went to Avo for Mother’s Day brunch. Haven’t eaten there in awhile, but always remembered it being very good. This experience was not so great. We went mid-morning and not right as church was letting out. Took awhile for the waiter to come and take our order; I really think there was only one waiter! Two hostesses would come by and refill our water periodically. My husband asked for a cup of coffee, only one that asked for it of our party of four. Waiter told us that all of their French Press coffee pots were in use and would bring him coffee once one was available “on the house”. He never got a cup of coffee, at brunch mid morning !? Maybe they should have a Keurig or a Mr. Coffee in the kitchen so a simple, basic coffee could be served. He’s not picky. People seated after us got coffee, but there were several drinking it at their table, hmmmm!
There are no salt and pepper shakers on the table, my husband asked for some salt for his egg dish (please see photo below of what was brought to our table). It was a measuring cup and a measuring tablespoon (i have never seen this done, ever!).
Food was ok, ordered the steak biscuits with their usually fabulous pomme frites. They were over cooked. My husband and son liked their dishes fine.
It was just a weird dining experience. They filled up more of their tables as we were there, but I wouldn’t say every table was full. Like Easter, think you need to bump up the staff for a holiday like Mother’s Day. May or may not go back for awhile, certainly won’t go back for brunch.
Daughter went to the bathroom and the “seating area” in the back had small tables turned upside down on the couches, sectional sofa was all disheveled. Just looked unkempt.
The service tonight was terrible. I’ve been to AVO so many times over the years and I’ve never experienced service that was so slow and rude. We waited 15 minutes before we had any service, and then once we ordered drinks it took over 20 minutes to pour wine when we were surrounded by empty tables. We ordered our food as soon as the drinks came out because we were so rushed and offended by the service. A few entrees came out before our drinks, and when we asked about the status of our drink orders the server was completely disrespectful. Our burgers were served raw when we requested medium. We watched the tables around us receive drink after drink and constant attention from the server. Very disappointed.
When we are in town, this has been one of our go to places. The service was an embarrassment. We had out of town guests. It was a Friday evening. The place was only half full and our waiter couldn’t even take a drink order. The food was still good but the service will keep us and others that we spoke to that evening away. Too bad.
Avo NEVER disappoints! We love this place - food is always good and we especially enjoy sitting outside on the 2nd floor when the weather permits!
Drinks at the whiskey bar were great. Food at AVO was just ok, service was slow. Poor wine list.
My family and I had Sunday Brunch at Avo to celebrate my birthday. It was truly a special experience. The menu offerings were great, even my very picky teenager found several choices that she wanted to try. She liked everything she ordered, and ate most of it. Her favorite was the pancakes which came as a plate of three very large ones (she was only able to eat one of them as they were large and she also had scrambled eggs and grits, but she enjoyed the rest at home the next day). The grits were also delicious. My favorite was the Avo dip and pico that came with house fried chips, and my husband loved the scones. Our experienced server was nice and attentive. Overall our experience was excellent! We’ll be back!
I am sorry to say that we were not impressed with Avo. Service was friendly, but very minimal. Our server did not offer to tell us anything about the menu, specials, popular items, etc. We ordered, he brought our food and then we ate . No one checked on us to see if we were pleased or needed anything. No offer or suggestion or even question as to whether we wanted dessert. The ticket was just dropped at our table. The food was good, but not remarkable. For the level of restaurant Avo is, the prices, the location, and the lovely atmosphere, we expected a special experience.
We sat outside on the porch for a Friday night dinner. The service was good and the wine and dinner were delicious. We've always had a good dining experience at Avo.
We had several out of town clients we were entertaining. The food, service and overall dining experience was excellent.
I have eaten at AVO many times before and have been thoroughly impressed. However, Sunday at brunch our waitress was not attentive, even though there were just a few other tables, and our food was less than desirable. I was very disappointed.
A reliable spot for a great meal. Food and service are excellent. Be sure to try to rosemary ketchup with the truffle fries--you will not regret it! Ambiance is influenced significantly by other diners--we shared the room with a large party of teenagers celebrating a birthday, so you can imagine it was on the loud side. Certainly nothing to hold against the restaurant. Sunday brunch is also delicious.
Bday celebration for two adult kids. Nice atmosphere.
Wonderful experience at Avo. The wait staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly.
Wonderful Easter brunch...
Todd, our server, was professional, personable and efficient. Avo’s take on Eggs Benedict was especially good. The Hollandaise variation with orange zest was especially interesting and very tasty.
We were disappointed in this trip to Avo. Normally their service is impeccable. The restaurant was not nearly full, and we waited for nearly an hour for our food during brunch. Our food was not particularly warm when we received it either. We had to ask for condiments, etc., as none were offered.
Easter brunch was great! The whole family enjoyed the dishes, and the service was excellent. We usually visit Avo in the evenings and order our usual favorites, but it was a nice change to visit for brunch and see an alternative menu with plenty of variety. We will definitely return for brunch again soon!
Awesome burger, interesting sides, simple prices, excellent location
Loved starting with their French press coffee for spring brunch on the porch after early Easter mass.
excellent brunch, beautiful restaurant, great service
have always been a big fan - lately the food quality is not what is has been in the
I had a chicken sandwich that was the size of a chicken finger.
We love AVO!. It is our go to restaurant especially on Sunday night when they have half price wine! Service is always great as well as the food.
There for brunch on Sunday afternoon. Good meal. Be prepared if you order the pancakes, they are huge!! But very good.
The ambiance is amazing. The prime filet and sweet potato mash were great! Collard greens...negative. Tried a Ying Yang margarita, not great either. Very strong drink and the balsamic vinegar gives it a off putting taste with each sip.
Service was attentive but felt pushy with the drinks. Food was good but over salted and maybe too rich? Sampled the pork sliders, sweet potato mash and curry shrimp. Portions were small. Chairs were uncomfortable. Would recommend Dram over Avo because you still have access to both menus in a more comfortable setting. If you're looking for a nicer evening meal I suppose this would do, but there are far better options.
Ownership has changed and the food isn't as good. Burger overcooked. Menus came out filthy. Full of stains. The fish tacos aren't as good. It's just not the same.
We always enjoy Avo. We were able to eat dinner on the upstairs porch. If the weather is right, we always eat on the porch. It is always much quieter and always comfortable. Avo is always consistently good with food and service.
I was with a friend, everything was nice but the best were the desserts and the waiter
Brunch was not that good; it was my first time there...perhaps the other meals they offer are excellent, but brunch was passable and that was about it.
It was a lot louder than we were expecting.
Consistently one of the Best restaurants in Birmingham!!!!!
Staff did not adhere to a discussed wheat allergy. That blunder was followed up with raw shrimp on the appetizer. Not undercooked, but completely raw.
Have a fun drink and casual bite downstairs at Dram, but most definitely don't waste your money (or health) upstairs at Avo.
