Avli Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
My husband ordered Beefeater martini--nope not what he got. They then said out of BE so try this one--nope it was same as the supposed one. Artichoke app was dry a lot of lemon and 3 capers on what was advertised as lemon & caper. Husband's scallop & pasta entrée had 4 kind of thin scallops & a lot of pasta. Flatbread app was just OK dry. Shrimp in shredded phyllo another app, arrived room temp & when I bit into it--shrimp was grey=raw. Sent it back with broccoli that was too raw. Both arrived back when Husband was finishing his entrée. Shrimp was fine when I cut.
We are very accepting diners--this was NOT acceptable especially the martini change out. Will not return. Waiter, Peter was fine however he should be more aware of what he is serving.
I've been to this restaurant many times in the past, so it had been about a year since my last visit. It's clearly a tired place, with frayed menus, stained walls, and, to my mind, is a victim of complacency. It has its followers, but with numerous more engaging restaurants in the area, I suggest the owner(s) start refreshing the place. Good service, good food, as always, but tired in appearance.
I have been a fan of Avli for many years. I haven't been there for a while and was disappointed with my experience. Some of my favorites were missing from the menu, the service was spotty, had to ask for water multiple times, the waiter was not friendly.
The food was not hot, somewhat sparse portions and just not as good as I remembered. Truly a disappointment to a loyal Avli patron.
Very disappointing to come to an 8 pm dinner reservation on a Saturday evening and have the first choice entree and second choice not in stock. I don’t need the waiter to tell me they fed 250 people before I came in. It is a Saturday evening and they should know their customer base, they didn’t last night. I also don’t care that they fed 250 people before our party came in, your customer wants to feel like they are important, not a number. Then what I did eat was bland and over cooked. Don’t think I’ll be going back.
I would give this place a second chance, but the night we were there, they experienced some kind of power outage and it reeked of spoiled fish. They had a display case with salmon and octopus (among other things) that looked very unappetizing. The waiter's English as a distant second language did not inspire confidence when he was answering questions about the smell and the potential effect on the food. Also, there was a number of puddles on the floor of the room (which would be unenclosed outdoors during summer). Having said all of that, we obviously stuck to non-seafood (or at least fresh seafood) options. The Chicken kabobs were pretty good, but a little too salty. The hummus was very good, as was the Greek salad. My date got the shrimp kabobs that were also pretty good.
Our neighborhood "go-to". Food is consistently very good with wide variety. Authentic greek but something for everyone (fish, meat, salads, tapas). Nice brunch selection as well, which is available every day until 2pm. Lovely outdoor/tented area. Wonderful staff. Very nice wine selection.
We took my mother out for her 84th birthday . First the waiter disappeared for a long time after we ordered wine. Next the dinner was poorly warmed up. The service was so sad. They never checked up with us. We had to find the manager who helped. The main entree was pasty and poorly warned . The waiter never picked up we needed more attention. I had ordered on line that this was my mothers birthday and had asked for a candle in dessert. This was ignored . Then we waited 20 minutes for the waiter to take our credit card
We have had a lot of Greek food and this was marginal. The saganaki was soupy. The pastistio was pasty . It was hot on the outside and cold on the inside
The bread was not authentic too
Disappointing dinner. We eat here frequently and hope this last visit was a fluke and that the food was just off for a night. The management had to take one of the dinners off the check and gave us dessert just because of the poor quality of one of the meals.
We will try again but were very disappointed this time since the people we brought had never experienced this restaurant.
We reside in the Southwest Suburbs and had family members in town for a Business conference and staying in that area. So decided to try out this place and we glad we did, we were seated at there outdoor dining area and made us all feel we were all seated in our own backyard. The food and service is very good our waiter have a vast knowledge of the food there serving. A must try if ever in the area...
Nice selection of appetizers, entrees, alcoholic beverages. The atmosphere was nice for a date, though a little too brightly lit to be romantic.
But the service was terrible. We waited close to 10minutes for someone to come to the check-in area. Waitstaff and bussers saw several of us standing there, but did not call the host. We waited 10 minutes for a waiter to take our order. The restaurant was not full; maybe 60% occupied. Waiters would congregate near the bar instead of circulating the room. We waited 10 minutes for our check as well. What should have been a 1 to 1-1/2 hour meal stretched to almost 2 hours because of all the extra waiting for service.
Avli is a lovely Greek restaurant with a terrific outdoor semi-covered patio whose cuisine is way above the Halsted Street norm, yet their prices are reasonable considering the quality. They are very accommodating to special requests as well. The only downsides are that the main dining room, which lacks any sound absorbing materials, can get really loud during peak times, and the waitstaff can get hard to find when it gets really busy.
It had been 2 years since we have been back here. The service was ok, outdoor patio was great but the portion of fish was small and the grilled octopus was over cooked. I will say the bread they brought to the table was hot and fresh but a little too thin and was falling apart.
We just left this restaurant and from the time we arrived until the time we left it was deplorable. We arrived at the end of brunch and it was not busy at all. There were plenty of waiters but we waited more than 10 minutes before anyone came to our table. We had questions about the menu but the waiter was not willing to answer anything. We wound up having a beet salad which was amazingly small (compared to other restaurants on the NorthShore) and a spicy chicken breast sandwich which tasted and looked disgusting. We ate the salad and left all of the chicken (we ate the bun because we were hungry!) we would have asked for something else but there was no one to talk to. We finally spotted a bus boy and asked him for our check. A waiter arrived with the check and asked if the meal was good. I started to answer that we were not happy but he didn't listen, just took the plate and left. I would never go back!
