The restaurant setting combines urban industrial design with local art, reclaimed wood and locally crafted lighting and features a chef’s counter, 18-seat private dining area, and a seasonal patio beside their vegetable garden.

Service was slow to inattentive and somewhat sullen, but restaurant was not busy. Octopus was overcooked and tough. We waited forever for strawberry tart dessert, which was good. Wish menu or server had told us it could take 30 minutes to prepare.
We celebrated a friend's birthday in the courtyard on a lovely summer evening. We had not been in a couple of years and were delighted to not be disappointed. The food was innovative, the ingredients were interesting, the service staff was well trained, friendly and helpful. And did I mention, it was all delicious. Well done, Aviary. We will be back soon.
Very good as usual. Pig ear is always great as is the octopus. Only minor suggestion would be to have a sl larger wine list with a better range of pricing. I am specifically talking about the Oregon Pinot Noir choices. But has no influence on whether I would go or not as the food is always excellent.
Amazing dinner and wonderful service! This dinner is in my top 5 Portland food experiences over the past 18 years. Every single dish blew our minds. Everyone we had contact with was super sweet and helpful also. The charred octopus... damn. It's really hard to choose a favorite dish of the evening, but the charred octopus... daaaammmmn! I'll be back for sure.
The veggie small plates were totally outstanding. we had all of them except for the sunchoke goat cheese one. (i hate goat cheese) we also had 2 fish plates, the octopus and dorade. i think the whole tables' all time fave was the beet/cabbage. what an exquisite presentation! such a treaat
I was told I was not allowed to pace my own meal. We were instructed that we had to decide on everything at once. The kitchen was going to pace my meal. How is that possible if they are not in the dining room knowing if I am done one course before they give me the next one. 5 people, apps and dinner in and out in just over an hour. Not what I would call dining. Very disappointing.
The "quiet" noise level reflects our eating at an off time; I do not know how quiet the restaurant would be when busy.
Had a wonderful dinner with friends Monday evening. Friendly service, great background music AND delicious food. Perfect!
As other reviewers have noted, the Japanese Eggplant was outstanding. I also enjoyed the oysters although I was disappointed that they were covered with ice crystals and mignonette which didn't let the clean oyster flavor come through. The Soy Roasted Artichoke was interesting, I liked the strudel and mushrooms but the artichoke itself was old, tough and din't have much flavor beyond the bernaise sauce. Perhaps other dishes would be worth coming back for, but Han Oak has consistently more exciting food.
went for the hot dog day special and stayed for the shandy
Wowie Zowie, It was great again.
This is the second time that I brought close friends to Aviary within the past several weeks and it was all that I bragged to them: creative dishes, adapted for my FODMAP diet, attentive service and modest prices. My guests raved and I was a happy camper!
It was our first time back in forever, but we won’t wait so long again. We went early, so not too many people. I trust the service would be as good.
Awesome as usual
Absolutely worth every penny. Awesome experience. Great employee. Love everything about it
Aviary is among the best restaurants in PDX.
Another excellent experience at Aviary. Sat outside for the first time, which was great. Every single item we ordered was amazing, and there were more that we wanted to try. Really interesting but so tasty as well. Definitely one of our favorite places in pdx at this point.
Great food and service
Long wait for both service and food
lovely place and great food! I love the clay pot chicken, eggplant, and crispy pig ear! Definitely want to try again.
Excellent service great food great atmosphere
Love this restaurant, amazing creative chef, outstanding service!! Close your eyes and point to anything on the menu, you will not be disappointed, it's that good.
The staff listens carefully to what guests are saying and reacts appropriately; like a candle on a dessert to celebrate an anniversary. I feel that the staff are professional restaurant folk; they care immensely about the diners' experience. If we're going to spend our money it is nice to have a very nice experience in return. Thank you, and we will return!
The Aviary is one of my "go to" restaurants. When I take friends or dates for dinner and want to make sure that they have a great experience, this is where I go. ALWAYS excellent and creative dishes at a moderate price for dishes that are special. Recently I adopted the FODMAP diet and explained to the server my restrictions. She went to the chef and came back with a "yes" or "no" next to each item AND for some items, how they would alter the dish to fit my diet. I've never had such a caring and thoughtful dinning customer service. And, the food was just terrific.
Went to Aviary with high expectations due to a top 10 rating by oregon live. A little disappointed. We had the half shell oysters and the deviled tea eggs for an appetizer. Both of those were actually excellent. The presentation of the beet salad was great, however the flavor was average. We ordered the hosien ribs and flat iron steak for our entrees and both were dry, overcooked and bland. Don't get me started on the desserts. Had the carrot cake and it was small and dry like a overcooked brownie. Gratefully Papa Haydens was on the way home to make everything right. The quality was not proportionate with the price. Would not reccomend.
This is an exceptionally fun place to dine with a group of friends. Inventive menu, nice bar helpful service. A great night out!
A great find in NE Portland for our first meal. The food presentation is very nice and the taste fabulous. The service friendly and knowledgeable. Portions are very good. Overall a great value.
Food was good. I expected everything to be super flavorful and it was just okay. The wait was quite long to get our entrees and overall it took 1 hour and 45 minutes from our arrival to our check for 2 people. I like the creativity of the dishes and combination of different textures and flavor, but a bit on the subtle side as far as flavor.
Aviary is a local favorite of ours. We are a familiar face to the wonderful staff, which feels great when visiting a restaurant that we love. The food is always amazing!!
Absolutely wonderful food. Would’ve paid twice as much for that quality. Getting a reservation was easy, too. Would 100% go again
Great French-Asian fusion food experience. Definitely try the foie-gras hum bao. The hoisin beef short rib is to die for. Don’t forget about dessert.
Beautifully prepared food creatively presented that tasted amazing! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all food lovers who really appreciated a great chef!
Creative and skillful. An understated gem to go back to regularly for both staple dishes and seasonal surprises. Let's the food do the talking, eloquently.
The food is always innovative and interesting. I had the grilled artichoke which was fabulous.
Good food at reasonable prices. Octopus and short ribs were excellent. Desserts weren't inspiring so didn't try.
This is our favorite restaurant in all of Portland. The quality of the food is superb and it is very reasonably priced. New dishes are introduced regularly and of course, some dishes never leave the menu. I had a new dish - chilled muscovy duck breast. It was so delicious I am already longing to head back to consume it once more. Chef Sarah never fails to amaze. Thank you.
Beautiful dishes with excellent flavor.
Amazing meals, amazing service, and amazing company.
Its our second visit and will not be our last. Food is unique and delicious. Service consistent and friendly.
Excellent taste, very delicious foods. One of the best restaurants in Portland area.
We had a very nice meal and also learned two valuable lessons. My wife has trehalase deficiency, which means she cannot digest trehalose (a mushroom sugar) and has unpleasant symptoms if served mushrooms. We identified the food sensitivity to our server, who identified certain dishes as mushroom-containing. We ordered others. Nonetheless, her symptoms started not long after we left Aviary.
At first we assumed that meant that the staff had failed to identify mushroom as an ingredient and wrote a review (here and elsewhere) to that effect. Lesson 1 - don't make that assumption (and remove the inappropriate bad review). The owner's response taught us Lesson 2 - that trehalose is becoming more popular as a food additive, having started in Japan. So people with trehalase deficiency are going to have to be more and more careful about what they eat. Ugh.
So our opinion of Aviary has reversed - thanks to their dedicated owner.
