Aviary Ratings and Reviews
This is a beautiful space and the food we had was generally good; great even. Our waitress, however, was not very attentive and seemed quite annoyed/borderline rude when I asked about entrees and sides that were prepared or could be prepared without dairy or egg. She appeared to have little interest in having a dialogue with me about the non-dairy/egg items on the menu which, for Portland, was a little surprising. I understand that restaurants get a little tired of endless requests for substitutions. But I've been asking these questions for years and this is the first time I've experienced such an immediate, visceral, negative response to a fairly simple inquiry. I had fun with my friends and enjoyed some of the sides, but I'm in no rush to revisit this restaurant.
The food was very fresh and the presentations were unique and creative. We really enjoyed everything we had, foie gras buns, oysters, scallops, and cheesecake. We didn't wait long for anything and my husband is handicapped and he was treated very respectfully, fun for a date night!
Some wonderful happy hour items and a longer timer period than most. Very attentive and helpful service. The wines are a little higher priced than some places, but the red we had was very good and happened to be from an area that our friends had stayed in while in France.
They had us with the butter, complementary and flavored with garlic and anchovy, served with the bread. Everything thereafter was superb. The menu tended to red meat the night we dined.
We ordered 5 dishes to split amongst the five of us. The flat iron steak was the carnivorous gem among standouts; we also enjoyed chili-glazed venison (not all in our party likes game), and the scallops - richer and buttery-er than what I'm used to. We ordered two plates of the latter. From the top half of the menu we tried the tempura green beans and that is probably one of the dishes I'm going to periodically crave. Also had the crispy pork belly salad and it was delicious. (Yes, that "delicious" descriptor is the theme.) Finished with one of the best desserts I've ever had, flourless chocolate torte with candied ginger and orange puree. Coffee is served in individual French-presses which was cute.
The space is kind of bland, but it's intimate and there are cute childlike bird drawings framed on the walls. We came the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so the restaurant was not particularly crowded. I'd assume when it is, and it ought to be, the noise level can go up. It is spendy, or was for us but we were there to celebrate a birthday. Really good food, if I didn't emphasize that enough.
We went to Aviary for my birthday. And, we brought along our 10 month old son... The host and server were very accommodating and did everything to make us feel right at home. The highlight of the meal were the lamb ribs with tamarind sauce and the crispy pig ears with coconut rice! Our entire meal was excellent. Thank you, Aviary Team.
After conflicting reports we decided the try this place.
I was beyond our expectations. Very good service, friendly and well informed.
Food fit for foodies, nice combinations of sauces.
Strongly recommend artichoke,scallops and octopus.
Wine list was the weakest spot, but we still managed to find a good wine for a reasonable price.
Disappointed with the service this time around. She was super nice and things came out fast enought, but the usual knowledge of the menu wasn't there. She couldn't tell me much about the wine. She mainly just told us what was popular on the menu. In the past, the server was passionate about food, would steer us to interesting things and geek out on the food nuance. Sadly that was gone this time.
Food and WINE were very expensive, quantity on the plate was limited. Apparently they had a big group there (somewhere in the back) and the service was terrible. I was told my steak would take longer, but it took twice as long as the waiter said. An hour is too long to wait especially when the visible customers were few. This restaurant is trying too hard to be slick gourmet and they missed the mark in my opinion.
I fell in love with this restaurant from Portland dining month a while ago. Their 3 course menu was the most thoughtful and delightful out of all the ones I got the chance to try (which included some like Papa Haydn, Departure, and Fogo de Chao), so I was excited to visit them again for normal dining. I saw the silken tofu on instagram, and knew I had to order it. The 4 cup chicken was an item that I saw was new as well, so I figured it would be worth a try. My date had the foie gras hum bao and lamb. All our dishes were great, but none left a strong impression, except when the hoisin sauce flavor would be a little bit too dominating in the foie gras and tofu dishes. The restaurant is still one of my favorite Portland gems, and I recommend it for anyone wanting to have a nice little dinner while out on Alberta.
We love Aviary! It is the first restaurant that we go to when we visit Portland. Had one visit a couple of years ago that was not as magical as other times, but this occasion was one of the best meals ever. Best steak ever. 4 cup chicken was awesome. And the Shrimp toast made me moan. Seriously.
Very interesting and great tasting small plates. Loved the tofu dish and roasted artichoke dish. Flat iron steak over Douglas fir also very good and very Oregon. Server made excellent recommendations and took excellent care of us. Definitely would recommend and can’t wait to try more of the menu!
Such a fun dining experience! I was seated at the chef's counter and was able to see the work first hand! I had the flank steak with bone marrow and potatoes...man, so buttery and filled with happiness (also I was hungry). They do let the steak rest (as you should) and it so worth it. I had a lavender house made soda; it was a great palette cleanser; love the taste. I also had a hum bao with foie gras. Yes, you can say " I had a hum bao with foie gras" and it was good! Something that I would have never expected to try.
This place is a foodie's dream; they are creative, different, but just do food really really really well! You will not be disappointed. I will say, if you are the hamburger ordering type or like "traditional pasta" this place might be a little much for you, open your mouth to new adventures! Think of this place as uniting unusual ingredients and flavors that just work! They didn't win get a James Beard nom for nothin.
We tried the vegetarian tasting menu! Glad we found this restaurant during our stay in portland. One if the best vegetarian menu i have ever had. Creative in the way textures and flavours are mixed. Highly recommend for the vegetarian tasting menu. But i am sure all the dishes are as good as well!
This is an excellent restaurant: very inventive food choices, with a mixture of some unusual flavors and ingredients. Everyone should try the crispy pig ear dish; sounds a bit ghoulish but very tasty. We loved the roasted carrots and black lentils, the tempura green beans, and the pork short ribs. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. My only reservation: the choice of red wines by the glass is very limited. We really didn't care for our blended Pinot Noir or blended Merlot, and would have liked more choice. On the other hand, the Sauvignon Blanc was great.
It’s a rare occasion that every single dish is spectacular. We particularly liked the charred octopus accompanied by the most amazing ricotta cheese circle. I rate this establishment as one of the best meals ever and fairly priced also. The portions were perfect for sharing. A long list of mostly French wines, several Spanish with a few local Pinot Noirs. Our server was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Don’t miss this place.
The service is great, good drinks and overall experience. This is a great special occasion place with a good vibe. I have some food allergies and this limited me to 2 items on the menu. For that reason it isn't a good fit for me but my friend enjoyed it. So so on amount of food to cost.
I have enjoyed this restaurant in the past but this meal was an extreme disappointment. From a snotty and incompetent server to average (at best) cuisine with an incredibly long wait between courses, I can not, in any regard, recommend this establishment any longer. I will not return.
Excellent, creative cuisine at a fair price. Two couples can order say 4 smaller plates and 4 larger plates plus desert and make essentially their own tasting menu. The portions are good for sharing. I'm not an expert on the Portland food scene, but Aviary certainly does the city proud in the eyes of visitors.
Booked here with no foreknowledge of the restaurant...because it is close to my daughter's house. Was absolutely blown away by the food. Best meal of 2017!! Tuna crudo was fresh and delicate. Tempura green beans were savory/spicy/crispy. Charred octopus was perfectly cooked and the molten cheese a perfect accompaniment. Steak over douglas fir had just the right amount of pine/smoky flavor, and kurabata ribs were absolutely succulent. Lemon-rosemary meringue dessert was perfect ending. Sharing all the dishes allowed us all to enjoy every flavor. Thanks Aviary, we'll be back!!
This was our second time eating at Aviary. The food was amazing once again; however, we were disappointed with the service we received this time. The waiters were slow coming to our table, never asked us about if we wanted another drink, and we sat with empty glasses of water or any other beverage before even finishing our meal. It seems as if the waiters were overwhelmed, or were not particularly interested in our table of two. I was especially disappointed since we had such great service the first time we ate there.
