Avenues Bistro - Brookside Ratings and Reviews
Our overall experience was underwhelming and a bit disappointing. We waited quite a long time at the table to be acknowledged by our server, so long that we decided to go back to the bar to get cocktails. The restaurant was full but wasn't packed. The waiter wasn't really friendly - clearly he wanted us to eat and leave. Two of us had the medallions/crab cakes and those were very good. The other two had the strip steaks which were very thin and tough - not up to expectation for Avenues. We asked for coffee with dessert and it was cold - so we had it removed from the bill and didn't drink it. Flourless chocolate cake should be rich and moist, but ours was dry.
Enjoyed the Restaurant Week special lunch menu. Had the crab cake appetizer, lobster ravioli with shrimp in a cream sauce and chocolate "mound" (banana cream over nougat center and chocolate outer covering. All courses well presented, flavorful and fresh as always. One of Kansas City's best values.
We had a 1:15pm reservation, were seated next to the door in the bar area (cold, windy day). We ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. Although customers at tables near us & at the bar who were seated as much as 30 minutes after us were served their meals, we did not receive our entree until 2:20. One of the entrees was not what was ordered and we waited longer to get it. Our waitress, Allison did not check on us or offer an explanation for the delay. We were finally told that it was the Kitchen's fault, not hers. In addition, Allison told us that glasses of wine were 50% off, but our check reflected 30% off. We understand that it is Restaurant Week & Avenues was busy, but feel an hour is an unusually long wait time.
Ordered the KC strip. It was appropriately pricey but inappropriately tough. The potatoes au graten were tasty so that was good. The waitstaff were friendly enough but it took a long time for everything (order, drinks, food served, etc)
I think that the service was off because it was unusually busy but the food quality is an issue that should be addressed regardless.
We visited Avenues Bistro during restaurant week so it was busy and the menu was a very nice prefix with something for all tastes. Our server was not as attentive as I would like, brought wrong drinks but excusable, after all, they were busy. Food was good! Menu was a bit over embellished based on meal served. I ordered salmon and prawns and received average sized shrimp at best so that was disappointing. My husband ordered steak w/ lobster said it was good but I think the gem on the menu was the short ribs. My girlfriend ordered and said it was fab! I also ordered the brussel sprouts in a cream sauce with bacon, highlight of my meal....they were so very yummy. Overall I would recommend Avenues Bistro and I am looking forward to returning and trying the lobster ravioli.
Delightful evening celebrating a friend's birthday. Was very busy as it was the first Saturday of restaurant week. However, we received good service and the food was great. We usually come for brunch, but will certainly think about returning for dinner in the future.
We were a little disappointed. Our table was right next to the restrooms and every time someone opened the door we were blasted by cold air. We were seated here despite there being lots of open tables! My meal was good but my meat was probably slightly overdone , and my husbands meat was way undercooked.
To be honest, I was quite disappointed with my experience. My friend and I went here because it was on KC Restaurant Week, but I will probably not return. Service was great, but the food was medicore. For the first course, we both got soup, but it came to us lukewarm at best (mine got cold after the first bite). We both ordered filet medallions and the crab cake for our main entree, and again was disappointed. I am not hard to please for steak, but they were thin patties and there was no pink in mine, when I requested medium rare. Crab cake was delicious, as were the side of scalloped potatoes I got, but when 2/3 of the main course is.... blah that leaves an impression.
For dessert we got the chocolate flourless cake and then another type of chocolate/fruit cake... both were ok. I don't usually leave reviews, and I have no idea if it was because they were busy or because they were offering food for cheaper (three courses for $33 is a steal!) but that shouldn't matter. Quality of food should not have to decrease to accommodate KC Restaurant week, the purpose is to get people to try it when they might not have before and to get them to want to come back.
If that was the quality of my food for $33 I would not go back to pay full price for filet medallions/soup/dessert again.
The Caesar salad had 1 crouton for the whole salad . No bread or crackers were served. The salmon with plain white rice came cold and the steak my husband had was lukewarm, rare and chewy even though he ordered it Medium. We did not send it back because the waiter had so many tables that we did not want to be a burden. We will not be back. Very mediocre food for the price.
Food was good as always. Service was way off this time. One of three meals arrived to the table way after the other two (it was a salad with grilled salmon so nothing special). Also waited a long time for the check and then for the receipt. Not sure what was going on...
The food is somewhat inconsistent. For example, one time their filet will be wonderful, the next time very tough. Small plates and salads are very good. But their wine list is awful...especially their reds. I don't understand why because there are so many good wines out there for reasonable prices...they need a new distributor, perhaps. Service is always impeccable and the atmosphere is one of the best in town, except that sometimes the music is too loud. Their prime rib Sunday special is so-so...not the best I ever had, but not the worst either. Their tasteable menu makes it possible to try things at a reasonable price.
It was nice to have salads, pastas, and a couple other appetizers available. This is included in the price of brunch. Also, they have a bottomless drink special for only $10. Overall, the food was average. I was with a party of five and no one loved their meal. The service was not that great. They made several mistakes and did not seem to care. The restaurant was clean and decorated nicely. I do not believe we will go back.
We went to Avenues for our family's holiday dinner. Several people had great meals but the people who ordered a filet were very disappointed because it was very chewy. Our salads were good and the people that had risotto with their meals thought it was very good. There were not as many seafood options as in the past. We will go there again but we will not order a steak.
Went for NYE. They had a special 4-course menu that sounded spectacular on paper, but the salad had too little dressing, the filet was undercooked and chewy and the chocolate cake was so dry it completely crumbled. Our friends that ordered the pork chop, however, said that it was very good.
Had a big group of girls for brunch and I called about a 12 top group and said it would be find to split up the group for 6 and 6 and the guy on the phone said no we can do 12 but there’s another reservation after you, I said okay should we come earlier ? And he said no. Long story short
We felt rushed ... the food was not good, our waitress was very rude to us, then said hey you guys have to go , the whole time was just rushed .. I came out of town and had a brunch with old friends and it was rushed and the service just sucked.. I will not be going back. If it was that big of Deal we had to be gone at a time then you should have slit us up two different tables, and the waitress was like “oh well you guys kinda mess up because two of your guest didn’t show up.. again it was a last min emergency for two people that couldn’t come! So sorry to cause a disruption for your next party. I’ve been here before and loved it and this last time was / will be the last time I come there for brunch.
We usually love this space... especially for brunch.. This time we were sat in a back section and it ruined the entire experience. It became a different restaurant with poor ambience, slow service and no cinnamon rolls! If I return I will not sit back there!
