Menu is limited and food choices a bit whacked out for a hotel restaurant. Serve some normal items va getting all fancy with dishes that don’t even sound good. Would not dine here again
I made a reservation for one. When I arrived, there was no one at the host stand. After about five minutes of waiting I went i to the restaurant to find assistance. One of the servers told me that they currently “had a hold on seating.” (This was despite the fact that there were many empty tables.). I asked how long the wait would be...she wasn’t sure but said 5-7 minutes. About 10 minutes passed and then a hostess appeared. By this time waiting customers had given up and others had arrived. She did do have eye contact and did not ask if she could help. She was absolutely unhelpful, not communicative, and once I asked she just said that they had a “hold on seating” without further explanation. She then disappeared without helping me or the other customers. I waited a few minutes more with no one showing up to help. A couple of times employees (including the hostess) walked by quickly without eye contact, clearly wanting to avoid the waiting customers (including me). When I still had not been seated 30 minutes after my reservation time and had been given no sense of when seating might actually occur, I left the restaurant. I will not be going back.
Restaurant did not honor our reservation. Stated they were too busy. We were not the only ones turned away.
Valentines Day Dinner
We waited 40 minutes with no bread. No salad and no visit from the waitress.
Incredibly slow service coupled with timeworn decor. The food was good, not great, but well more expensive than the quality merited. It felt like I in a suburban hotel restaurant near a sleepy city rather than in the heart of the Nation’s Capital.
We've eaten here before without problems but they appeared to be woefully short-staffed for Valentines Day. We had about 75 minutes before our show at the National Theater. With only 2 people in line ahead of us and lots of empty tables it took 15 minutes to seat us.
Our waitress was very friendly and, when told of our time constraints, guided us to salads and appetizers since the kitchen was backed up. She took our food order right away so she could put it in then disappeared. We finally told the hostess that if we didn't get our food we would need to cancel, she went off. About 5 minutes later the waitress came and told us that the salads had been ready but she didn't bring them out because she was waiting on the wings. We told her to bring them.
Salad dressing requested to be on the side was on the salad. Extra dressing on the side was missing. And the waitress had disappeared again.
If we hadn't eaten here a few times before this would be a one-star review. It was not the relaxed, quick bite before the show we envisioned for our Valentine's Day out!
Service was exceptionally friendly, but very slow.
Menu looked good but the food that came out was not very good
The food was tasty and the service was good. Two people having one appetizer, two salads with meat, and two soft drinks, spent $70 plus tip. That’s quite expensive for lunch on a rainy day during a conference.
Great place for dinner before a show at the National Theater.
Really wonderful food and very good service
We went to Avenue Grill after seeing an afternoon show at the National Theater. It was just opening and wasn't very crowded at first. Our waiter was so attentive, polite, and overall excellent! We loved him! I would go back there just to see him again!
The rating reflects the fact that when we got to the restaurant, we found it CLOSED. We were not the only ones, there were at least three other parties in the same situation. it is unbelievable that a hotel restaurant would allow Open Table to issue reservations for it, that same afternoon, when it was not going to be opening that evening. We had to settle for eating in the 1331 Lounge, across the lobby, as we had tickets for the National Theater and did not want to start looking for another restaurant. The 1331 Lounge did offer us the opportunity to order from the Avenue Grill menu. However, the 1331 is designed as a bar/lounge and not as a true eat-in facility. We ordered from the 1331 menu.
It is a great location if you are going to the Theater but has a very limited menu.
We wanted to have brunch before seeing "Rent" at the National Theater. Avenue Grill was very convenient. They had a wonderful variety of foods, all well prepared. I got to enjoy a bagel and lox, grits to which I added cheese, charcuterie, a very well prepared omelet with a nice variety of fillings, and some breakfast pastries. It was nice that juice and coffee were included. Only problems, even though it was not listed on the omelet ingredients, they had cheddar cheese which should have been included on the ingredient list. And the website said if we showed our tickets to the National Theater, we would get a 20% discount. The waitress said they are not doing that this year, so it should be removed from the website. Overall, an enjoyable meal.
Food was cold, very bad not worth money!
Ate there because we were staying at the hotel and had theatre tickets. Very limited menu but what we had was fresh and attractively prepared.
We very much enjoyed dinner and would recommend it for anyone going to the theatres nearby.
The food was delicious. My favorite part of Avenue Grill was our server Liscome. He was so personable, attentive and humorous. Rave review for him! He gave the Jamaica warmth to us.
The service was professional, thoughtful and just the right level of attendance. While the menu has a lot of outstanding options; I ordered some standard selections that were prepared perfectly. Delicious and on-point! Overall couldn’t hope for a better experience. Will be back!
For some reason our order got lost and so it took about two hours to finally get our food. It was a good thing we were not in a great rush. They did take half off the bill to compensate, which is commendable, but next time I have brunch there I would go to the buffet and serve myself.
Great restaurant to go to if going to the National Theater. The Avenue Grill is right next door to the theater. Just make sure you make a reservation early so you can take your time and enjoy your food. The food was pretty good. The soup was outstanding (corn and crab or clam chowder). I had the crab cake and fries. I enjoyed the fries very much, crab cake was pretty good. My daughter had steak which looked amazing. She said it was really good. The others enjoyed their food as well. Our waitress (sorry can't remember her name), was fantastic. Our food came out in a timely manner. Oh we had the bread pudding for dessert which was scrumptious. I will go back just for the bread pudding and fries!
Service was super slow and avocado toast was not good! Avocado was not ripe and they literally just put slices of avocado on 1 giant piece of toast! Also, the fried chicken is not a large plate!
Very convenient if staying at JW Marriott since in hotel. We only ate hear for convenance , so we can have the breakfast buffet and skip lunch to have time to see all the DC sights. This plan worked well and the breakfast buffet had anything you could want and more to start your day. Staff were all very friendly. Good starting point to start your tourist day!
I have a group that attends shows at the National Theater and we always come here before each show. The staff should be commended for serving a large group timely while also getting the checks to us quick so we can attend the performance. Love the team here. thanks.
We had come down to the National Theater and arrived at 6:35 for dinner. The waitress was told that we had theater at 7:30 and we needed to get in and out. We ordered hamburger and fries the couple we were with they never got there meal. It was soup and crab cake. I will not recommend this restaurant to other.
Typical hotel restaurant that could be much improved. My club sandwich was fine, the service was terrible. I would not recommend unless you cannot leave the hotel for some reason.
Brought food with sauce covering the utensils.
Took 4 attempts to get a wet napkin to clean my hands and 5 attempts to get replacement utensils. Even the manager continued to get it wrong. This took a good ten minutes by which tome my kids had finished their meal and my steak was cold. When I complained the steak was cold they didn’t offer any reduction to the bill at all...perhaps this is their usual way of doing things. As a 20 year Marriott rewards member this makes me reconsider eating or staying at any future hotels. Simply put, the service was absolutely abysmal bordering on farcical.
Outstanding service from our wait staff. I am with a group that attends theater performances occasionally a the National Theater and this team always takes care of my group which is at least 10 people. They are professional, courteous, quick and understanding of a short timeline. Looking forward to my next theater event with dinner at the Avenue Grill.
Used to be a good place with good food, don't know what happened. Now you pay an exorbitant price for mediocre food and service. One waiter seemed to be working the whole place. Very small steak (5 oz), ordered medium came raw, sent it back now it was burned on the outside and raw on the inside and came with 4 (yes 4) french fries, take the walk from any number of good restaurants within 1/4 mile of National Theater and skip the convenience of this one. Crappy food, tiny portions at ridiculously high prices and mediocre service is too high a price to pay for convenience and proximity to the theatre.
First I want to say our food was good. We arrived before 5:30 but were given the pre-theater menu. We had to ask for the full menu and explain that the show started at 7:30. Happily we were allowed to order from the full menu. We found our entrees well-prepared and the portions ample. We each ordered a dessert and found them to be quite good, too.
It was a cold, rainy evening - we chose to dine here because we didn't want to walk far to and from the theater. So we expected a typical hotel grill and that's what this was, lacking ambiance - no complaints since we didn't want to walk farther. But when I ordered an extra dry martini the server returned from the kitchen to ask if I wanted if on the rocks, which was disappointing. The cocktail itself was not dry, and my partner was charged full price for his virgin bloody Mary. However, all the wait staff were friendly, attentive, and performed without fuss.

They had a specific dinner menu for pre the theater. Selections were limited. I would have liked to see a full menu. Service was quick. Food was good. When we ordered a dessert that would take 15 min to cook they told us upfront which we appreciated. It was pouring outside so we chose to stay at the hotel to eat dinner. It was fine.
The service was very good and professional. However, My group was very surprised with the small /limited theater menu, since it was after 5:00 pm. We were informed that the full dinner menu began at 7:00. This was disappointing but, the dining experience was good.

Consistently good food/service and atmosphere at Marriott restaurants. You always know you're going to have a solid meal.
We had tickets to a matinee at The National Theater next door to the Marriott and decided to go early and have lunch at The Avenue Grill. We had previously eaten dinner there when we had tickets and it was as good for lunch as it was for dinner. The menu has something to suit most palates. My husband said his burger was excellent (and he’s very picky when it comes to burgers) and my grilled chicken was nicely seasoned and served on a soft brioche bun. Some friends met us for lunch even though they weren’t going to the theater. The club sandwich contained the perfect amount of ingredients and was made perfectly. Even though it was past the time they served breakfast they prepared our other friend a mushroom and cheese omelet which she devoured very quickly. Our server was very pleasant and we left for the show in a very happy frame of mind which only added to our day’s experience.
Nice restaurant before the show
Quiet atmosphere, great for larger parties. We had 10 people. Our group had 5 different entrees. Food was great, service better. Everyone was very happy with their meal. Chef came out to check on us and asked if we needed anything, it was a cold night and someone mentioned a nice hot chocolate, which was not on the menu, he said no problem, went back and made us up some fresh hot chocolate. It was delicious! Would definitely recommend especially after a show at the National!
