Avenue Grill - Denver Ratings and Reviews
We have had lovely dinners at Avenue Grill in the past. Had not visited in last 5 years. On a recent Saturday evening there were no tablecloths, no candles, ordinary presentation of food and mis-matched flatware; plus no notice that the dinner was for my birthday. Nervous about a return visit or a recommendation.
Because of terrific past experience, this is difficult to write.
Have always enjoyed outings at Avenue Grill. Waitperson was pleasant and attentive without being intrusive. Especially enjoy sitting by the windows. Wine was house and very acceptable. The vegetables were excellent. Cooked just enough. Pleased that the mashed potatoes came with skins. Steak had very good taste but I would prefer just a bit more tender. I don't like rare so I always order medium, but sometimes that just isn't tender enough for me. However, I know I am not a steak afficionado and can be really picky. Most would have probably found it very good. Prices are always reasonable. Overall, no major complaints. I would recommend and return myself with guests.
While I couldn't stay for dinner because my date wasn't feeling well, this is a nice, quiet and cozy spot to grab dinner or drinks with your significant other, or if you just wanted a quiet evening a few blocks away from the downtown atmosphere.
I will say that I was disappointed in the deals that they offered with regards to the "Denver Dining Passbook". I would like to see more price-friendly deals with this restaurant than the only 4 options that will work with the Passbook.
Energetic atmosphere in an historic building. Good brunch options and friendly service. They were understaffed but it was New Years Day. My bottomless mimosa never saw a refill in 60 minutes but hoping slow service was due to the holiday as I enjoyed the food and setting.
Went to the Grill for New Year's Day brunch-lunch. As always the wait staff is attentive and makes us feel welcome. I was a little disappointed in the quiche of the day, the filling was dry and the crust was so thick it was very difficult to cut. Although this wasn't the best meal we've ever eaten at the Grill, we do appreciate the easy parking in their lot, the pleasant neighborhood vibe of the restaurant, and the prompt service. We sat by the window, which we prefer because the nose level can really be a problem for us in some areas of the restaurant.
We were there Christmas Eve and the place was so warm and festive. Wonderful generous martinis. Delicious tender calamari. Excellent comfort food and good portions - neither too large nor too small. Next time we'll try the desserts as well - especially the bread pudding. A very good constant crowd which is so refreshing since the restaurant is much more of a "neighborhood gem" and not a "trendy hot spot." The staff was all so welcoming and kind. We will be back!
Unfortunately the menu, as listed right here on Open Table, shows nightly specials. The Sunday one looked especially good and we made late reservations following an event. I've been here in the past (they've been around for almost 30 years) but it had been a while having moved away, ironically to the city on which it is based where I often went to the specific restaurant it is patterned after (Tadich Grill, San Francisco). We walked in, late for Denver, and found out that the specials don't exist anymore. Far too late to go anywhere else and glad that we did not: the regular menu is varied, portions are good and both the food and the service were great. Will definitely go back, as I used to, but really wish the information online was up-to-date.
I've dined at the Avenue Grill many times and their service and food quality is always good. They did remove oysters Rockefeller from the menu, but this did not keep us from having a great meal. The service is always topnotch and is equal to or greater than similar restaurants in Denver.
I’ve been an enthusiastic patron of the Avenue Grill for 20 years or more. There were, however, a few glitches on my last visit. The hostess seemed to be unable to manage seating people standing in line, with reservations. We arrived on time, but had to wait more than ten minutes to be seated despite the fact that tables were empty and available. The food was generally good, but the Buffalo Stroganoff was stunningly bland. It seemed to be untouched by any kind of spice or sauce; just meat, mushrooms and noodles. It was better the next day, after I reheated it and seasoned it.
The service was excellent despite their being short on staff (as the server explained).
I’ll be back, but I hope they can polish things up a bit.
Classic Denver establishment that has been around forever and for good reason. Solid food at a reasonable price in an upscale-casual environment. Ave Grill is a great business or date lunch spot. Plenty of designated restaurant-only parking is directly across 17th, which makes parking a breeze! Pretty traditional, comfort-foody fare. The pot stickers are awesome, BTW.. Warm, comfortable interior space.
We waited over 90 minutes for our meals. Supposedly there was a computer glitch. About an hour after we ordered the waiter came back to verify our orders. The manager (if he really was) didn't seem concerned at all. They did take some money off of the bill but it wasn't worth it. We were late to our show and it just generally made a special occasion a bummer, a waste of time and a waste of money. The food is usually quite good and perhaps this evening was a "glitch" but the way it was handled was unacceptable.
We have eaten there for years and was surprised at the changes. We miss the white linen tablecloths. It has gone a little to casual now for the prices we pay. The food is good as usual. Staff is friendly and didn't rush us as we were there for the evening. It maybe a bit noisey if they has been crowded but they weren't so it was ok.
It was our first time visiting this staple of the Uptown neighborhood and it didn’t disappoint. Great cocktail list and some retro throwback special menu items from their menu dating all the way back to 1988. Very professional staff and all around good service. Brunch menu and specials look great, I think thats our next visit.
An old friend was in town and it was her birthday. The Grill was quieter than we usually experience, so we got the seat we wanted in a quiet corner so we could talk. The specials were interesting but we were all happy to have some old favorites. Enjoyed the evening, didn't feel rushed, and the service was great.
I normally always have the salmon with polenta and it never disappoints. The last time we dined here, three people at the table had the bison stroganoff which was tasty but contained very little bison, and tons of mushrooms. Their cocktails are very good as well as their wine and port selection. We really liked the vegetable egg rolls as appetizers and their creme brulee was extra delicious. Service has always been very good. This restaurant is one of our "go to" places both for ambience and comfort food.
