AVANT Ratings and Reviews
We were disappointed with Avant. We had reservations and still had to wait 20 minutes for our table to be ready. The service was slow without the servers or assistant checking in with us or updating us. It took nearly 20 minutes to get our drinks. Finally, the only food we enjoyed from our meal was the doughnuts and coffee for dessert.
SUPER SLOW in getting food, drinks and dessert once ordered. We were sitting right next to the bar and it took her 12-15 mins to get the wine order to the table. I realize it was a Monday and they were not at full staff but the place was close to empty.
With that said, the food was amazing and wine was lovely. Our waitress was very pleasant but not familiar with the menu.
This was a holiday meal that I made reservation a week in advance and drove from La Jolla to empress my employees and their wives. Worst experience ever and I never complain about a meal.
Waiter assigned too many tables. Could not get his attention. Bus boy was hesitant to help when asked. Took way to long to take drink order and then bring them. Brought wine bottle then too 20 Mins to get my wife's glass of Prosecco. Waited a long to to place dinner order. Waited 1.5 hours went by and then the waiter brought the desert menu thinking that we had already finished our meals that have not been brought to the table yet. 2.25 hours from seated to served. Salmon dish described to have Couscous did not have it in the preparation. my Short rib was over cooked. Other guest were obviously complaining. Waiter brought Desert menus again after and offered to comp. it. Insulting at that point. My guess is there is something really wrong with management at this restaurant..
They use vegetables grown on the property. The dishes are so flavorful and seasonal. Staff was cheerful, helpful and engaging. The halibut was a generous portion and so full of goodness. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the aroma was sinful. Will be returning often.
Menu sounded better than it tasted. Beef tenderloin was excellent, but the broccoli rabe with it was horrible. "Crab salad" appetizer was attractive looking, but was more like a ball of cream cheese with avocado wrap than anything tasting of crab. Mushroom appetizer was over salted. I suppose if you choose carefully you can find a satisfactory meal, but we were disappointed. For the price, you'd do better at a Chart House. Rancho Bernardo needs some new fine dining choices.
Nice atmosphere, but the noise level of the live music is too loud. We could barely hear our dinner companions over the music. We had a long wait at the door to be seated (on a Saturday evening). Service was average. The waitress disappeared for long periods and we had to call over other waiters to help us at times. The food is creative and tasty, although portions are very small for the price. It is a nice atmosphere for a special occasion, but the cost is prohibitive for everyday dining. I wish they would run their Monday specials again. We would be regular diners, as we live very close, if they had more specials for the community and lowered the noise level.
Our server kept coming to our table to tell us that the first course would be there in a few minutes. He repeated this for three times. I finally said that we perceived the service to be very slow for a pre=arranged three course dinner on Thanksgiving. We had been in the restaurant almost 50 minutes when the first course arrived. The food was good, but highly priced for the evening.
Thanksgiving Dinner - Called earlier to advised of disabled guest. Thanked and told table would be set and elevator to use. Arrival seemed to be a surprise. Big scramble by staff. Where'sthe elevator key? The search began and finally the disabled guest joined us. Took a long time for server to acknowledge us. 30 minutes to get cocktails. Servers stood around talking to each other with food in their hands. No wonder all the food was cold. Prime Rib was way too salty and very fatty. Three of us only ate 3-4 bites. Server asked what was wrong. When we explained it to her she said, "Let me get you some to go boxes so you can take it home." We didn't care for it there, why would we enjoy it at home. We tossed the containers in the trash bin while waiting for the valet to bring up our car. One member of our party had dirty silverware we pointed it to a staff member. He stood trying to clean the food off. NO, we would like a different set of silverware. When he came back he just through the silverware in front of the guest. There was no recall of which of us ordered what so with each course came a food auction. Food Auctions should never occur in a restaurant. Desserts were dreadful. Pumpkin tart was either bought or made far ahead of Thanksgiving. Never saw a manager working the dining room talking with guests, Happy Thanksgiving, is everything okay, thank you for spending your day with us,and we hope you will come back and see us soon. Guitar music was awful. Ordered coffee with my dessert. Coffee arrived with the presentation of the bill. Fast food drive in restaurant, coffee shop, turkey dinner in a box from a local grocery store all would have been better. Once the elevator key was found I did enjoy being able to use the elevator to go up and down as needed. Dinner/drinks/tip (yes, I still well even though the service was awful.I don't want to appear to be the cheap one) was..$441.00, yes I said $441.00 and 2 tacos at Jack in the Box would have been tastier.
We went there for Thanksgiving dinner, we were disappointed with the food.
First course was quail and it didn't tast anything ...... My fish ( second course) was cold they took it back and it came back cold again! The warm bread and dessert were very good!
The service was great, they are very friendly and cordial ,they just need to improve the menu.
This was my first time here. My girlfriend and I like to meet every couple of months for dinner. We always go to the La Jolla area but thought we'd try something closer to home. Avant didn't disappoint. Not only was the food great but I really appreciated the staff. From the valet, to the host, the server that brought us our food, and most of all our server for the night.
Great service, great food, enjoyable atmosphere!
It is the best place in SD to eat. The chefs are amazing. Shoutout to executive Chef Travis. We are all thankful for his leadership. Both GM and AGM are amazing which create the friendly and inviting environment. Bartenders make the best drinks. And what can I say about the wait staff. Jonas and especially Crista know the menu inside and out. Based on her description of the food I got something I normally wouldn't and loved it. Crista, you rock!
Absolutely outstanding meal! We've eaten here many times, over three years, and the food has always been excellent, but the new chef has taken it to yet another level, with a creative, seasonal, locally sourced menu that combines distinct flavor profiles with innovative, thoughtful flair. Our foraged-mushroom appetizer with slow-poached egg was incredible -- I could eat it every day. And our mains were fantastic too -- duck with a variety of seasonal accompaniments not seen on every menu (turnips, beets, pears) and a suckling-pig plate featuring a variety of pork formats (fresh sausage, pork belly, loin). Plenty of San Diego standards too (Brussels sprouts, a variety of fish, nice dessert list). Perfect evening, and we're more than ready to head back.
AVANT, while it arguably has the best food in the Rancho Bernardo area, is plagued with poor service. We had a party of 6, and our meal took ~2.5 hours, primarily because it took almost 30 minutes between courses. I also had to remind the server about my drink order multiple times.
We've been to AVANT three times now, and two of the three, it has fallen far short of the bar for service based on what we'd expect for a restaurant of that price. We won't be back.
It was my fiancé’s 35th birthday and we planned dinner at AVANT which was entered into our reservation. We were given a nice corner table which was great but the service was terrible. Our server kept disappearing, took 45 mins for oysters to come and our drinks were left without an offer of refilling - we never did get our second drinks. Overall, the restaurant has potential but needs to hire better servers.
Excellent menu in a beautiful serene environment. Delicious Gluten Free, Paleo Friendly options in a creative gourmet presentation. Terrific extensive wine list and full bar available. Well worth the prices.
Gorgeous resort if you’re looking for a get away, too.
We live in RB and have dined at Avant numerous times. This was our first time there since they hired a new chef and revamped the menu. The prices have increased dramatically while the portion sizes are smaller. The food quality is about the same. My wife had the short rids and they were superb. I had the salmon and it was just ordinary. The charm that was once present at Avant is no longer. Another reviewer mentioned that the prices were similar to Market and we agree. We also agree with the other reviewer that Market is far superior to Avant. The last point is that we have a hard time with the 3% surcharge in response to the hike in the minimum wage. It's just tacky. Overall, we were disappointed in the direction Avant has gone. While we will not say we will never go there again, it does not have the same appeal it once did.
Avant entree prices are the same as Market Del Mar. So of course I'm going to compare it to Market which has amazing food and is well worth every penny. Avant, unfortunately, missed the mark in every instance: plating, amount of food, taste and of course price. It was just average. Will not return. Also, the additional 3% surcharge that restaurants charge now to cover minimum wage is stupid.
Dinner was great, but when I ordered a 2013 Cab, the waiter came back with a 2014. He then went to look for the 2013 and came back telling me that his manager told him both the 2013 and 2014 were the same. I hate to publish reviews like this, but when spending $100 on a bottle of wine, the vintage should be correct and they should not try to push a different vintage on me. All else was great though and I would go back just for the steelhead trout app(10)
Entree was so-so. Both for my wife and I. This restaurant is good for 1 time and 1 time only. Too many better high end restaurants in San Diego. Loved the ambiance. Service was good but at the end not so good. Oysters were very good. We're glad we tried this restaurant during restaurant week otherwise we wouldn't be as happy.
I've been to AVANT one other time, last year. My sister and I have birthdays a month apart and we've been here the last two years to celebrate our birthdays. It also happens that our celebrations have fallen during San Diego Restaurant Week, during which AVANT has a prix fixe menu. Our experience last year was spectacular, leading us to try again this year, this time with my 10 year old nephew joining us.
Unfortunately, this experience was less spectacular. Oysters for the appetizer weren't bad but seemed to be a bit warm. They were served on a bed of seaweed instead of the traditional ice. Otherwise, good flavor, though had we chatted a bit longer instead of digging in, I'm not sure how good they would've been. We both had a few drinks each, both of which were great; kudos to the bartender.
The pork belly appetizer was fantastic; would've made a meal of that alone! However, the ribeye was disappointing as the sauces meant to accompany it were dried on the plate. Steak itself was nice and tender but the mushroom tart with it was inedibly salty. My nephew ordered the fish and chips from the kids menu. We were told the fish was cod, but it had the texture of overdone chicken and the batter was extremely salty as were the fries.
My chocolate dessert was delicious, though I felt the fig tart my sister ordered was bland; figs weren't ripe. The highlight of my nephew's meal was definitely the ice cream - he loved the warmed chocolate sauce with it.
Overall, I was disappointed. $50 dollar prix fixe menu on a pretty quiet night should've had a bit more attention paid to it. I'd love to try again as I know the restaurant does some things well; not writing them off yet.
My and wide two daugters came here for dinner, the service was outstanding, the server was very knowledgeable about the menu and made very good recommendations. We had the prime bone in rib eye and the sea bass which were bothe delicious, we also had oysters whicg were a variety of fanny bay, kushi, we also hard their mixed plate which is a cheese/charcuterie board. Everything was very good! I would like to mention Michael the server assistant, who before he greeted our table saw that my daughter was cold, so he went and brought her a blanket, then introduced himself and helped make our night memorable. We will be back.
