AVANT Ratings and Reviews
We had a table for 8 and the service was great - even though the restaurant was full. Drinks are creative and there are two wine lists - one with reasonably priced wines and a special list with reserve wines and reserve prices for special occasions.
There are a lot of options on the menu and very reasonably priced. Portions are also generous. Everyone ordered different starters and entres and no one was displeased with their choice.
Is this a restaurant to travel to from San Diego or La Jolla - no - but if you are staying in the area, this is a great option.
We were very pleased to enjoy a special dinner here. The remodel of the restaurant was well done. Portion sizes are moderate. Prices seemed appropriate for quality and flavors. A top pick for couples or adult families looking for a cut above. We will be coming back!
Food was very good except the short rib was a bit sticky with an over powering sauce. The duck and black cod were better. Had a wonderful and and interestingly displayed persimmon salad. The food, service and ambiance were good, but except for the salad, the food was not all that unique and the ambiance really feels like a hotel dining room. Probably a good place to meet with a bookclub or business meeting, but does not for a special night out.
Our waitress was terrible. She barely checked on her tables. She tried to over charge us but lucky we caught it on tbe bill. She tried to blame it on a "computer glitch" and said it happened to a couple other people which I took it that she tried to over charge them as well. She was not surprised when we brought it up to her. We went for New Years's eve dinner so we were disappointed walking away from this restaurant.
Server was incredible. Food was excellent. Dishes were well-timed. The night we attended there were a number of large family parties and some children were making a bit of noise. That knocked the ambiance down a couple of stars. Would highly recommend otherwise. We had the monkfish and grass fed dry aged ribeye. Superb!
We have been going to the RB Inn and Avant as a group for a few years now, and it is always such a treat. This time is was very different, the food was just not up to par. The descriptions in the new menu sounded amazing, but the food was just ok. It left us all a little disappointed.
The people are still great, and the atmosphere is so nice. We will stop here for a cocktail, and the view, but sorry to say we will make other dinner arrangements going forward.
Service was excellent - waiter was very knowledgeable about how the food was prepared, the ingredients etc. The food was tasty and the presentation was lovely. The background music was OK, though would not have been my first choice. This is a personal preference and others may disagree. My dessert was exceptionally good. This venue is pricey, but a good choice for special occasions. I took my daughter and son-in-law there for Christmas dinner. All three of us were happy with our meals. We also enjoyed the wine we selected.
Unfortunately, not great food, disappointed. This was for our Christmas dinner. The food just wasn't holiday oriented for a pre-set holiday meal; some of our food was overcooked, cold, or not with the holiday theme. Kids food options very limited and not worth a $40 per child. Really not impressed. Had great hopes...will likely try another time, but for the larger venue "holiday" theme Christmas events.
It was good, but not stand-out. Taste didn't quite match the price. However, interesting menu items. Drink menu lacked a little. They had someone playing live Christmas music, which was a little too loud. Nice ambiance. Above average, but not stellar, service.
I should preface this review to say that the food has always been fantastic as have been coming here for many years since it reopened as avant. The service has always been a little slow and desirous but never been too much of an issue.
Except tonight. 7.45 seated, no cocktails on the table until 8.30, just bread and water. Finally the appetizers came out around 9 after a second round of bread was delivered to our table with no apology for the delay in our appetizers...the apps were the meat and cheese....not the hardest to put together. We commented and were advised it was the kitchens fault as they were backed up.
So then the main courses came. I ordered the monkfish wrapped in ham. Immediately something appeared amiss with the lack of ham wrapping. When I asked about it. I was advised the ham was in the chowder...no where I could see. So I double checked the menu, clearly stated wrapped so I asked to speak with the manager. An apology was offered and an attempt to make the rest of our meal enjoyable but still the same party line was had that the ham is in the chowder.
Despite being offered complimentary desserts, some of the table didn’t really fancy eating dessert that late so a few coffees were ordered instead, how could they get that wrong? Cold cappuccino. Not even luke warm.
It really was an end to a dreadful night of service with no apologies other than when complaints were made. A simple “we are sorry for the wait” and an offer of getting more drinks for the table (we would have gladly paid for them if offered) but we were ignored for so long. Slow is very often good, but if you’re intentionally slow, at least be attentive.
I love the bone in ribeye they do here and have had it many times, but I can’t see us returning again.
We were disappointed with Avant. We had reservations and still had to wait 20 minutes for our table to be ready. The service was slow without the servers or assistant checking in with us or updating us. It took nearly 20 minutes to get our drinks. Finally, the only food we enjoyed from our meal was the doughnuts and coffee for dessert.
SUPER SLOW in getting food, drinks and dessert once ordered. We were sitting right next to the bar and it took her 12-15 mins to get the wine order to the table. I realize it was a Monday and they were not at full staff but the place was close to empty.
With that said, the food was amazing and wine was lovely. Our waitress was very pleasant but not familiar with the menu.
This was a holiday meal that I made reservation a week in advance and drove from La Jolla to empress my employees and their wives. Worst experience ever and I never complain about a meal.
Waiter assigned too many tables. Could not get his attention. Bus boy was hesitant to help when asked. Took way to long to take drink order and then bring them. Brought wine bottle then too 20 Mins to get my wife's glass of Prosecco. Waited a long to to place dinner order. Waited 1.5 hours went by and then the waiter brought the desert menu thinking that we had already finished our meals that have not been brought to the table yet. 2.25 hours from seated to served. Salmon dish described to have Couscous did not have it in the preparation. my Short rib was over cooked. Other guest were obviously complaining. Waiter brought Desert menus again after and offered to comp. it. Insulting at that point. My guess is there is something really wrong with management at this restaurant..
They use vegetables grown on the property. The dishes are so flavorful and seasonal. Staff was cheerful, helpful and engaging. The halibut was a generous portion and so full of goodness. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the aroma was sinful. Will be returning often.
Menu sounded better than it tasted. Beef tenderloin was excellent, but the broccoli rabe with it was horrible. "Crab salad" appetizer was attractive looking, but was more like a ball of cream cheese with avocado wrap than anything tasting of crab. Mushroom appetizer was over salted. I suppose if you choose carefully you can find a satisfactory meal, but we were disappointed. For the price, you'd do better at a Chart House. Rancho Bernardo needs some new fine dining choices.
Nice atmosphere, but the noise level of the live music is too loud. We could barely hear our dinner companions over the music. We had a long wait at the door to be seated (on a Saturday evening). Service was average. The waitress disappeared for long periods and we had to call over other waiters to help us at times. The food is creative and tasty, although portions are very small for the price. It is a nice atmosphere for a special occasion, but the cost is prohibitive for everyday dining. I wish they would run their Monday specials again. We would be regular diners, as we live very close, if they had more specials for the community and lowered the noise level.
Our server kept coming to our table to tell us that the first course would be there in a few minutes. He repeated this for three times. I finally said that we perceived the service to be very slow for a pre=arranged three course dinner on Thanksgiving. We had been in the restaurant almost 50 minutes when the first course arrived. The food was good, but highly priced for the evening.
Thanksgiving Dinner - Called earlier to advised of disabled guest. Thanked and told table would be set and elevator to use. Arrival seemed to be a surprise. Big scramble by staff. Where'sthe elevator key? The search began and finally the disabled guest joined us. Took a long time for server to acknowledge us. 30 minutes to get cocktails. Servers stood around talking to each other with food in their hands. No wonder all the food was cold. Prime Rib was way too salty and very fatty. Three of us only ate 3-4 bites. Server asked what was wrong. When we explained it to her she said, "Let me get you some to go boxes so you can take it home." We didn't care for it there, why would we enjoy it at home. We tossed the containers in the trash bin while waiting for the valet to bring up our car. One member of our party had dirty silverware we pointed it to a staff member. He stood trying to clean the food off. NO, we would like a different set of silverware. When he came back he just through the silverware in front of the guest. There was no recall of which of us ordered what so with each course came a food auction. Food Auctions should never occur in a restaurant. Desserts were dreadful. Pumpkin tart was either bought or made far ahead of Thanksgiving. Never saw a manager working the dining room talking with guests, Happy Thanksgiving, is everything okay, thank you for spending your day with us,and we hope you will come back and see us soon. Guitar music was awful. Ordered coffee with my dessert. Coffee arrived with the presentation of the bill. Fast food drive in restaurant, coffee shop, turkey dinner in a box from a local grocery store all would have been better. Once the elevator key was found I did enjoy being able to use the elevator to go up and down as needed. Dinner/drinks/tip (yes, I still well even though the service was awful.I don't want to appear to be the cheap one) was..$441.00, yes I said $441.00 and 2 tacos at Jack in the Box would have been tastier.
We went there for Thanksgiving dinner, we were disappointed with the food.
First course was quail and it didn't tast anything ...... My fish ( second course) was cold they took it back and it came back cold again! The warm bread and dessert were very good!
The service was great, they are very friendly and cordial ,they just need to improve the menu.
This was my first time here. My girlfriend and I like to meet every couple of months for dinner. We always go to the La Jolla area but thought we'd try something closer to home. Avant didn't disappoint. Not only was the food great but I really appreciated the staff. From the valet, to the host, the server that brought us our food, and most of all our server for the night.
Great service, great food, enjoyable atmosphere!
It is the best place in SD to eat. The chefs are amazing. Shoutout to executive Chef Travis. We are all thankful for his leadership. Both GM and AGM are amazing which create the friendly and inviting environment. Bartenders make the best drinks. And what can I say about the wait staff. Jonas and especially Crista know the menu inside and out. Based on her description of the food I got something I normally wouldn't and loved it. Crista, you rock!
