AVANT Ratings and Reviews
The atmosphere and service and food were all terrific. I left a special instruction on my Open Table request to sit close to the music even though that section was sold out. They did an excellent job of placing us close enough to enjoy the music and a quiet evening at the same time. Great experience.
Great place for a business dinner and good food. The service was exceptional and staff very attentive and respectful of conversations. They did not interrupt or pressure us to respond on their timeline, but always available when we were ready. Since it was a negotiation, I really appreciated their discretion. Steaks were great, swordfish was fabulous and presentation was beautiful!
Our dinner was spot on fantastic! Our server Tom was very attentive and knowledgeable on the menu. The restaurant itself was very clean and well lit. We dined on a Tuesday for my husbands birthday and Tom even brought us a special off menu desert. The wine list was great offering many options as well as great by the glass choices. I would highly recommend this restaurant for any special occasion or date night.
We dined at Avant on a quiet night. Staff was attentive and the restaurant was lovely and comfortable. I had asked for my filet to be cooked ‘medium' and it came to me medium rare. I sent it back and it was returned in about the same condition. Overall the food was very good.
One of our favorite restaurants.
Crista's service is impeccable, she knows the wine, the cheeses, all the ingredients in the all the dishes.
The chef is great. The food is creative, expertly prepared , they change some of the menu about every three months.
From the something as simple as the bread and soft sea-salt sprinkled butter (finally somebody gets how to serve bread) served at the beginning of the meal to the entrées to the desserts to the drinks- it's all excellent
Staff is laid-back, but watches for your every need. It's all those perfect little details that have had us coming back for over 10 years.
We went for my husban's birthday and the experience was disappointing. Service was slow, as opposed to well paced. They may have realized it was slow because we were given a complementary cheese board. Our server just kind of phoned it in. At one point he was oddly testie with one of our party. Food was very good untill the complementary BD desert chosen by the server. We were given a Maliabi Milk Pudding that was just down right unpleasant. Yes I know it was complementary, but just warning, not good. It is such a great room with a hip vibe, would try again but just happy hour on the patio.
We had never been there before and do not plan to return. We went for our anniversary actually cancelling a reservation at the Marine Room in La Jolla for someplace closer, The Avant. I had read reviews of Avant after making reservations and numerous posts complained about the noise. So I called early afternoon on 5/20 and left a message asking for patio dining to avoid the noise. A young lady called back around 5:00 saying we were set for the patio @ 6:00. Arrived at 6 only to be told they don't reserve the patio, it's first come first served. They did have a table out there but had to find chairs for it, a process that took almost 20 minutes. The main entrance is by the bar and live music was playing and it was quite loud inside so I understand the previous complaints. Come to find out the patio was tiny, just 5 tables and a couple sofas. We sat at our corner table with no menus for awhile. Some kind of machinery was running non stop the whole time , sounded like an exhaust fan or something similar. As the small patio filled up it was as noisy out there as inside. Hard to converse over the noise. It took about 45 minutes to receive our order. My wife ordered sea bass and she received 2 tiny portions that were over cooked and dried out. I ordered the pork chop which was ok. Neither meal was worth the cost however. A shared salad, our entrees, a glass of wine for my wife & iced tea for me and a shared dessert came to almost $120.00 before any gratuity.
We were very disappointed overall. The one good thing was good service from wait staff. The Avant should not bill itself as an upscale restaurant because it isn't, even though they charge upscale prices. If you want a loud sports bar environment and don't care if you can hear anyone you might think it's ok.
We have dined at Avant many times. Tom has been our waiter a fair number of times and knows how to be "just right" in terms of being there just enough while allowing us to talk among ourselves without him hovering. We enjoy the food and drink greatly. It is close to home and, being part of the Rancho Bernardo Inn, the ambiance quite pleasant.
For a Mothers Day Brunch I felt it quite lacking. I don't mind paying an exhorbitant price for value. What was there was very good. Instead of lots of tiny desserts I would have preferred at least a few vegetables and an omelette station. Maybe some other foods. Variety was skimpy. The Staff was lovely and tried to be accommodating
We had reservations at 5:00 O'clock and we arrived a few minutes before. The hostess was not there and it was a full 5 minutes before we were acknowledge and sited. Our server was sweet and attentive, no complain about his service but after we ordered our drinks and appetizers, our dinner took 1 hr. To get to us. We were given plenty of bread and butter while we waited though.
We were told the fryer was down, so we couldn't order the calamari which was unfortunate. Also, maybe the food was delayed because the head chef wasn't there.
I have been to the Avant 3 times before and both the food and speed of service have been superb in the past; I was just sad that after I told my companions how great my previous dinning events had been, that they didn't get to have the same experience.
The food was good but not exceptional given how pricey it is. The bread was the standout. The loud music was annoying and didn't fit the dining experience in the dining room. The spaces (bar/dining room are too close.). We may try the outside fire pit area sometime but we're disappointed with Avant.
Dined on a Saturday evening. Service was great, food was very good, and there was a vegetarian and a vegan option available. Crowd noise was a bit loud, and there was a live singer/performer, which was expected for a Saturday evening - keep that in mind if looking for a quite, romantic setting.
Here is what we had:
Ahi Poke app. - Amazing
Scallops & Pork Belly - Amazing
Sea-Bass - Really good
We also tried 4 of their signature drinks (don't remember the names), but all were unique and very well done. Also had 2 bottles of Pellegrino.
Overall, we were very happy with everything (food, drinks, service). I think everything was ~$150
Service was quick and friendly (Thanks Dalton and Shane). Drinks and food were very tasty, as was dessert. Would recommend the pork belly and lamb belly. I had the butternut squash bisque which was excellent! We sat outside but plenty of seating inside as well. The doughnuts/beignets for dessert were incredible.
