Avalon Grille Ratings and Reviews
We dined here for the first night if our girls getaway weekend. We loved the service and ambiance. Our food was delicious too. I ordered the short ribs and my austere the burger. Her burger was a little overdone but still tasty. The price is kind of high but you pay for the view and good food.
I said earlier your waiter was excellent. But the staff at the front door tried to give our table away to someone who just entered. Until I reminded them I had made an reservation for my 16th anniversary. Then they decided to seat us.
Also you should teach your staff about the pictures any paintings of your family you have in the restaurant as there are many people who visit your restaurant and ask who is that in the picture or when was that taken. Or even questions like when was this restaurant built. But your staff admitted they knew nothing about your family or any of the pictures. To me this is incredible as people visit your island are interested in your family.
Overall your restaurant is clean and nice and the staff are friendly and helpful. But little things like knowing something is important to me when I go to a restaurant.
This is called a “grille” but has a dinner-house menu, prices ($$$) and decor. The decor is classy, nostalgic and elegant, really nice. The music didn’t fit (beach boys/ 80’s dance music?) and I asked the bartender if they could play some dinner music, but nothing changed.
There was a family with a crying baby that we had to ask the waitress to do something about and she told the manager. It was awkward, but it was sooo nice once they left.
The wait staff brought cake for my Mother’s birthday and sang, so sweet. Thx!
I started with the roasted tomato soup and ordered the plantain-crusted halibut. Everything was delicious and flavorful. It was a generous portion and I couldn't eat it all. Everyone at my table liked what they ordered (calamari, filet, and shrimp) and said it was one of the best meals of the weekend. Thank you!
We really enjoyed the Avalon Grille and appreciated the creative menu and attentive staff. while 'on island' for the annual Jazz Festival we were lucky to squeeze a reservation in between shows and really enjoyed our experience. The braised and grilled octopus was outstanding as was halibut. When deliveries via the ferry from LA were off, the chef found other interesting options to add to the menu. The butternut squash soup (my first this season) will be hard to top.
The food is good, albeit overpriced due to the island location and its affiliation with the island company. If you sit outside on a weekend, be aware that you'll be catching the noise (and pedestrian traffic) from nearby watering holes such as the Marlin Club, which can disrupt the "mood" of the place.
This is by far one of our worst experiences at a restaurant. The service was nearly nonexistence. The dinner took over two hours and we didn't get dessert. The restaurant was so loud that we couldn't hear each other.
- Duo of Gazpacho: the best dish of the evening.
- Caesar salad: average.
- Crispy Brussels sprouts: very greasy.
- Grilled octopus: extremely salty, should have sent it back.
- Grilled pork chop: okay, but had to order medium doneness, while told by the waitress that the chef recommends well done.
- Roasted airline chicken: very dry.
- Local white seabass: extremely fishy, you can smell the stench two feet away. We sent it back and ordered the pork chop. Waited almost an hour for the pork chop and had to asked for our waitress about the chop 3 times, who was nowhere in sight. The chop was way over cooked and bone dry. We were offered 50% off the chop. Really?
Definitely, will not return.
This restaurant came highly recommended. I ordered the sea bass. I kindly told the waiter it was the worst sea bass I have ever had. For the cost of the dish, the sea bass was unusually thin. Not like a nice, filet sized fish that I've always had in the past. Not only was it paper thin it was so dry I didn't even eat it. The waiter was very nice and graciously discounted our meal. The couple next to us was thinking about ordering the sea bass and I kindly suggested they order something else. They appreciated the advice. The waiter insisted I had a bad piece of fish, regardless, I won't be back. The bread was delicious.
For our Wedding Anniversary we "Staycationed" in
Catalina and dined here on our anniversary. The service and food were very good. My entre, Halibut, was excellent, however my husband's steak was cooked medium, not medium rare as requested. The restaurant helped with our celebration by presenting us with an anniversary dessert. A very tasty and thoughtful gesture. Overall a delightful celebration.
The restaurant is well maintained and beautiful - excellent plein air art and historic photos are delightful. Fresh flowers are a lovely tough plus a friendly waitress and delicious food. We came down from Two Harbors on our boat for a "night out" and the restaurant was a treat. Well done, Avalon Grill!
We had two steaks, sea bass and a burger at our table. All were extremely over cooked to the extent we couldn't finish our meals. We informed our server and she deducted 10% from the meal which wasn't a surprise since we had a coupon for 10% off. This place is a tourist trap. Aside from a gorgeous view, that is all I would recommend
We had a party of 8 celebrating a birthday. The hostess was friendly and acknowledged the birthday. Our waitress was very good with just the right amount of attention to our party. There is a good selection of items; something for everyone. My husband and I are both vegan. He had the vegan ravioli. He said it was very good, although the portion was a little small for his appetite. I had the tostada without cheese which was on the smallish size but just right for a lighter lunch. They even brought a little complimentary dessert for the birthday girl. This was our second time dining here. I will definitely come back next time I'm in Catalina.
Food was good, our waiter was not. My wife and I were visiting Catalina for our one year anniversary. Last year we stayed for our honeymoon. We had been eating and drinking all day so we just wanted to relax that evening and share a meal. We didn't order drinks and shared a dinner and an appetizer. As soon as the waiter realized we were not going to spend a lot on food his attitude immediately changed and treated us like we were cheapskates looking for a cheap dinner. I still gave him a good tip for our short meal, none the less you should treat every customer like they are regulars if you want people to come back. Now if we ever find ourselves on Catalina again we will probably be exporting other options.
We had reservasations for four to celebrate our daughters birthday. We were promptly seated but after waiting over 15 minutes for someoneone to acknowledge our presence at the table my husband got up to speak to the hostess. Once the server finally came over she apologized for not seeing us sooner. The food and drinks were great though.
Delicious! Avalon Grille exceeded our expectations with delicious food and great service! Every plate of food was delicious- we sampled tuna tartare, truffle fries, flank steak, a huge Cobb salad, scallops and calamari, chicken and a special burger. Everything was really, really good- exactly as described, fresh, presented well. We were excited to find Rusack wine on the wine list and loved our bottle of Pinot Noir, Service was excellent- prompt, courteous, professional. A great meal! If we come back to Avalon, we will definitely eat here again. Thanks for the great night!
Is this really one of the top rated restaurants in Avalon? Good Lord of the dysfunctional taste buds... The ahi tuna was nothing special; the sea bass was overcooked, borderline cardboard tasting, not even the skimpy achiote could save it; and the $37 seafood mofongo actually tasted like cardboard (I've had delicious mofongo in Puerto Rico before). We ordered a bottle of wine that they did not have, which did not keep them from including it in the bill! The waitress was consistently rude, especially when we asked if they wouldn't mind turning down the music since we couldn't hear one another across the table. Her reply was, "There's a sign on the door." Granted, said sign said they'd have a DJ starting at 10PM --wish it had also said this place is a scam. $150 down the muddy toilet. Urge all your enemies to dine here.
